RUBÉN DE LA BARRERA JOINS DEPOR

13 Jan 2021
The club announced the arrival of Rubén de La Barrera as the new head coach of the first team. He will direct the training session on Wednesday.

The club announced on Tuesday the arrival of Rubén de la Barrera Fernández, he will be 36 on Monday and is the new coach of Deportivo signing a one-year contract.  Secho and Julio Hernando will be his assistants, both already worked with the club in the past.

The Galician coach is only 6 months older than Álex Bergantińos and is the youngest coach at Deportivo since José López Rodríguez, who coached Depor at the age of 33 during the season 1976/77. The comment is that Richard Barral preferred other options, but that Alfonso Serrano, who is the new technical secretary (imposed by ABANCA), chose him. Serrano worked before for CD Tenerife and was close to sign de La Barrera.

Rubén de la Barrera has followed a weird pattern. He is from A Coruńa and worked with several small clubs from the city, from there he jumped to Castile & Leon in 2014 and had a promising career working for CD Guijuelo, Valladolid B and Cultural & Leonesa.

In the latter he achieved his best results so far. His team conquered the promotion to Segunda for the season 2016/17, though one year later it was unable to achieve the permanence at the second tier and he left the club after the demotion.

From there he jumped to Al Ahli in Qater, club where ne didn’t succeed. Then he was an assistant of ex-Depor Asier Garitano at Real Sociedad, and his most recent job was to direct FC Viitorul in Romania (2020).

He is considered to be an offensive coach that likes to implement the 4-3-3 and the 4-4-2 as the normal formations at his teams. The challenge is now to change the mentality of team that has been criticized precisely for not creating scoring opportunities.
