THE RIVAL IN UEFA: HNK HAJDUK SPLIT

The 2008/09 UEFA Cup second qualifying round draw was held on Friday and Deportivo rival is HNK Hajduk Split from Croatia. It was one of the toughest rivals the Galician side could meet. The first-leg will be played on August 14 at the Riazor and the second on August 28 at Poljud stadium (Split, Croatia)

For the draw, the 37 first qualifying round winners were joined by 27 clubs entering the competition at this stage, including the eleven advancing from the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Once this stage is completed, the first round draw will be held on 29 August in Nyon, with the ties to be held over two legs on September 18 and October 2. The 32 winners of the second qualifying round will be joined by other 48 clubs, including copa del rey winners Valencia plus Racing Santander and Sevilla, cubs that ended fourth and fifth on the liga table. After the first round is completed, the 40 surviving teams will reach the group stage.

The Croatian squad was the toughest rival that Depor could meet. Hajduk is famous for its youth school. It’s one of the most prolific producers of high quality players which often continue careers in famous European teams. Some of Hajduk's former players include: Alen Bok??ić (ex Juventus, Lazio, Middlesbrough), Robert Jarni (ex Juventus, Betis, Real Madrid), Slaven Bilić (ex Karlsruhe, Everton), Igor ? timac (ex West Ham, Derby County), Milan Rapaić (Perugia, Fenerbah?§e, Standard Liege), Igor Tudor (Juventus), Ivica ? urjak (ex Paris SG), Luka Peruzović (ex Anderlecht), Aljo??a Asanović (ex Derby County, PAO), Ivan Buljan (ex Hamburger SV), Zlatko Vujović (ex Bordeaux), Stipe Pletikosa (currentrly at FC Spartak Moscow) and Niko Kranjčar (currently at Portsmouth). Other man that performed there was ex-Depor Dmitri Radchenko.

Precisely one of the goals scored by the Croatian squad in the first qualifying round was conquered by a young promise: Mario Tičinović, a 16-year-old midfielder that’s one of the hopes for the future. Hajduk has won five Croatian championships, the last one back on the season 2004/2005 and they ended fifth on the past tournament, reason why they had to play in the UEFA first qualifying round, instance in which they eliminated Birkirkara FC (Malta) with a 7-0 aggregate score. Between their most known players are: ex-Wigan midfielder Josip Skoko, ex-Bayer Leverkusen defender Boris ??ivković and ex-Maccabi Haifa midfielder Giovanni Rosso.
