The transfer of Fabricio Coloccini to Newcastle United is now official. The Argentinean central defender will travel during Thursday to England in order to pass the medicals. As it was appointed earlier, Depor is obtaining €11.5 million in the operation.

It’s over; the exit of Fabricio Coloccini is finally official as canaldeportivo.com published the news on Wednesday’s night. The player is traveling to Newcastle during this day in order to pass the medicals. The agent of the Argentinean central defender, Marcelo Lombilla, confirmed that everything was settled and that both clubs have signed the papers. It’s even expected that Coloccini will take part of Saturday’s friendly match between the Magpies and Valencia FC.

As it was appointed earlier, the Argentinean central defender has been sold to Newcastle United for €11.5 million plus incentives including a participation of Newcastle United in a future Teresa Herrera tournament. The Magpies will also pay the 15% of the transfer that correspond to the player.

Coloccini arrived to Deportivo in January of 2005 as an emergency solution to the problems had by Javier Irureta in the defensive zone. As part of the deal, Depor only paid €3 million to AC Milan and the Italian side even negotiated a participation in the Teresa Herrera. Coloccini played 15 matches at Jabo’s squad. Later Irureta was replaced by Joaqu?n Caparr??s and the Argentinean lived tough times at the squad as he later admitted.

Caparr??s tried to use Coloccini as a defensive midfielder, position in which he never felt comfortable. In June of 2007, the central defender was near to go transferred to Real Zaragoza, but Los Ma?os were only offering €4 million, while president Lendoiro was asking for €6 million.

In the end ?Colo’ stayed and made his best season at Depor, working hard and transforming himself into the leader of the defence. He even played all the possible minutes in la liga, something that no other field player has done before at Depor and that was made for the last time by a player in la liga during the season 1999/2000.

This transfer is also historic for the income that represents for Deportivo, because it means the fifth largest sell operation made by the Galician club in its history. The four previous exits that were more expensive were the ones of Rivaldo (1997, €24 million), Flavio Concei?ao (2000, €24 million), Roy Makaay (2003, €19 million) and Albert Luque (2005, €14 million). This last one was also made with Newcastle United.
