Deportivo returns to Scandinavia in order to play the first round of the UEFA cup. After the pre-season tour in Denmark, now Lotina’s squad will face SK Brann (Norway) in the next round of the second biggest competition in Europe. Brann is the current champion in the country though they have had a poor start this year.

The draw for the first round in UEFA took place on Friday and Deportivo will have to play against Sportsklubben Brann. This club is the current champion of Norway after picking its first liga title since the 1963 season.

SK Brann played the preliminary round in the UEFA Champions League, first they eliminated Latvian champions FK Ventspils on away goals, but later they were eliminated in the third qualifying round by Olympique de Marseille with a 3-1 aggregate score, that’s why the Norwegians will play now the UEFA cup. The start of season hasn’t been so good for Brann, the squad coached by Mons Ivar Mjelde is currently ninth in the Tippeligaen (Norwegian league) and they were hoping to reach the Champions League group stage for the first time.

Brann already played the UEFA cup in the past season and they were able to reach the Round of 32.  Among the most recognized players at the club are ex-Leeds Eirik Bakke and ex-Dundee United Robbie Winters, this last one is a Scottish striker that already scored 70 goals in 171 matches with the Norwegian side.

The first-leg between Deportivo and Brann will take place on September 18th at Brann Stadion, Bergen (capacity: 17,824) while the second match will be played on October 2nd at the Riazor. The winner will reach the group stage of the competition.
