NOVEMBER: FIGHTHING IN THREE FRONTS (II)

31 Oct 2008
November will be one of the busiest months for Deportivo during this season. And it’s that Lotina’s team will have to face seven games in three different competitions. Curiously, all the rivals, with the exception of Real Betis, are currently living a negative moment. The matches on this month are extremely important since they will mark the trajectory in la liga and also the survival in the other two competitions.

Then Depor will have a little break due to the international activity though it will have to play a liga encounter in the following weekend. This game is the visit of Athletic Bilbao to the Riazor. The team of Joaqu?n Caparr??s is currently in relegation after losing the last four games in liga, including three against the favourites: at Sevilla (0-4), Vs Barcelona (0-1) and at Real Madrid (2-3). At least the Basques made an important step in Copa after defeating Recreativo in the round of 16 (first-leg).

Athletic has had good luck during its last visits to La Coru?a, as the Basque team has achieved two wins and one draw within the last four matches played there. But in a general sense, the Basques have suffered during their visits to the Riazor as Deportivo has defeated them in five occasions during the last decade.

In the final week of the month, Depor returns to the UEFA Cup in order to host Feyenoord Rotterdam at the Riazor. The Dutch side has lost its glamour in recent seasons, it’s one of the two clubs that were never relegated to the second division (the other if FC Utrecht). But in the current Eredivisie championship, De club van het volk is living in hell as it’s now living in the drop zone after losing the derby of Rotterdam against Sparta (only 5 points in 8 games).

Like the case with Deportivo, Feyenoord lost the first game in the UEFA group with a 0-3 score (against Nancy-Lorraine) and before the clash in La Coru?a, they will face a vital game at home against CSKA Moscow (matchday 02). Therefore if the team managed by coach Gertjan Verbeek loses against the Russians, the game at the Riazor could be a final for them. Playing as a visitor, Feyenoord as only achieved a victory on this season. It was during the first round in UEFA: 2-1 over Swedish Kalmar FF.

The final match of November is the visit to Estadio de los Juegos Mediterr??neos in order to face UD Almeria. The Andalusian team is one of the surprises in this liga season as the squad coached by Gonzalo Arconada is fighting for the first places, but they have lost the last two liga encounters, including a disastrous 0-5 at Barcelona, reason why they are in mid-table now. This is the third historic confrontation between Depor and Almeria. The previous two were won by the Andalusians.
