Depor passed the round in Copa del Rey as it conquered a new 2-0 win over Elche. It was a poor game in which the visitors gave some troubles to Lotina’s side using the offside trap and as Depor presented some errors in defence. But all ended after Pablo ?lvarez took a penalty in the second half after a silly hand of Amaya. The best news is that Omar Bravo scored his first goal of the season.

Coach Lotina decided to put Miguel Angel Ferrer ?Mista’ in attack leaving Bodipo and Omar Bravo on the bench. Also, Joan Verd?? appeared in midfield in order to play alongside Antonio Tom??s, this last one was returning after surpassing an ankle injury sustained during the warm up of the first-leg.

Verd?? and Filipe Luis were the only players repeating their presence in the starting eleven compared to the squad that defeated Espanyol on last Sunday. Adri??n L??pez ?Piscu’ also played against the Catalans, but he did it as a replacement after the injury of Z? Castro. At Elche, coach Claudio Barrag??n trusted in the combination Dani Mart?n-Gato Caprari in order to reverse the result.

Both teams started the game with a low pace, neither Elche was risking or Depor attacking. The first approximation of the game occurred until minute 7, it was a combination between Verd?? and Pablo ?lvarez that ended with the right winger firing from close-range, but the ball hit defender Amaya and later ?The Shark? couldn’t control it.

Then Elche started to have the ball possession and the first chance for the visitors came at the 14th minute, it was a crossed shot of right winger Rub?n P?rez that went out close to the right post. Two minutes later midfielder Rodri tried to surprise with a cross from the right, but Fabricio was there to contain the ball. Deportivo left Elche to have the initiative and started to speculate with counterattacks, but the problem is that its players were constantly falling into the offside trap.

But then Depor had a small reaction that meant three chances in a matter of three minutes. All started at minute 25. First it was a cross of Pablo ?lvarez that Mista didn’t find inside the box. Two minutes later the same Mista scored a goal that was disallowed for an offside and after a combination between Cristian and Laure. A few second later Verd?? had an attempt to score, but his mid-distance shot was stopped by goalkeeper Jaime. Ex-Fabril Laure was very active in the first part, constantly running through the right side and making combinations with Pablo ?lvarez.

However, Elche continued to look dangerous. At minute 32, Depor took a corner-kick and Elche started a fast counterattack that ended with David Fuster, Dani and Gato Caprari alone against Piscu and Aranzubia. Luckily for the Galicians, Fuster missed in the last pass  to Caprari and the visitors lost a great opportunity to reduce the distance in the aggregate score. The play awoke a huge protest of Lotina against his players for the distraction. Because Colotto fell down to the ground during the corner-kick that started the counterattack, Depor’s players lost the concentration and allowed the attack from the visitors, situation that Lotina didn’t like.

Nothing special occurred during the last ten minutes, Elche continued insisting but the visitors were unable to surpass Colotto and a very solid Piscu, meanwhile Verd?? and Valer??n were making pretty combinations, while the work of Laure and Pablo ?lvarez was leaving the sensation of danger at Elche’s goal, but the home players were missing in the last pass or throwing the ball out, something that caused the lack of opportunities for Mista. In resume a first half that was leaving a bittersweet taste for the fans, both teams were trying, but they were not offering too much.

Elche started the actions pushing up front. At minute 46, Cobo had an attempt to score through a mid-distance shot, but his effort went over the crossbar. The response of Depor came with Cristian, but a defender cleared the danger when the Catalan was firing a shot from inside the box. Once again the defenders of Elche were surprising Depor’s attackers with their movements and the locals continued falling into the offside trap.

The visitors continued insisting, at minute 10 Gato Caprari missed a chance after failing to receive a pass inside the box, it was his last chance in the game as he was replaced a couple of minutes later by ?lvaro. It seemed that Depor will not have its night, but then Lotina’s side found a penalty after central defender Iv??n Amaya handled a cross from Pablo ?lvarez. The play was started with a brilliant pass from Cristian. The same Pablo ?lvarez scored the goal from the penalty spot fooling keeper Jaime with a crossed shot.

The goal was a hard hit for Elche and the visiting squad started to lose the initiative, situation that Depor used in order to create some chances, like the cross of Cristian that Mista missed to head (61’). One minute later Verd?? was replaced by Sergio, move made in order to rest the ex-Barcelona player for the game at Atl?tico Madrid. Later Alberto Lopo replaced Filipe Luis and Omar Bravo did the same with Valer??n.

These last two modifications meant a change in the system, now Depor was playing with a 4-4-2. Piscu covered the right-back position and Laure the left, while Lopo was performing alongside Colotto in the centre. In attack, Omar Bravo and Mista were leading the attacks.

With Elche already defeated, Depor started to find some room in attack, that’s how the second goal arrived as the Galicians beat for the first time in the game the offside trap of Claudio’s squad. Sergio started the play as he surprised the visiting defenders chipping the ball over the defensive line of Elche, Omar Bravo found it near the area and defeated Jaime drilling the ball to the opposite post. It is the first goal for the Mexican striker wearing Depor’s shirt during an official match, he celebrated it in front of the Riazor Blues.

Nothing else occurred within the final minutes of the match, there was only time for an outstanding ovation for Claudio Barrag??n, the visiting coach who thanked the support of the few fans that witnessed the game at the Riazor.

Not the best game for Depor, Lotina’s squad missed intensity in attack while it suffered some lagoons in defence, but Elche couldn’t capitalise those errors and fell down after a silly penalty committed by defender Amaya. Verd?? and Valer??n gave some sparks of their virtues during the first half, while Laure and Piscu shined at the back zone. One of the best news is that Omar Bravo scored his first goal of the season, something that should bring confidence to the Mexican.

Now Depor joins the other thirteen teams that are already qualified to the next round in Copa: Real Uni??n (who surprisingly eliminated Real Madrid), Espanyol, Valladolid, Poli Ejido (who left behind Villarreal), Almeria, Atletico, Barcelona, Mallorca, Racing, Betis, Athletic Bilbao, Sporting and Valencia.
