Squad news

09 Jan 2009
Lotina repeats a lineup in la liga for the third straight time, only Lopo and Manuel Pablo continues in comparison with the squad that was defeated in Copa, meaning that Guardado, Lafita, Verd?? and Bodipo are returning. At Sevilla, coach Jim?nez is presenting almost the same squad of Wednesday.

Sevilla is one of the rivals in la liga that has suffered the most at the Riazor, and it’s that the Andalusian club has only won three times in La Coru?a within the last 55 years, twice in la liga and the other occasion in Copa Del Rey. Sevilla, however, has achieved a positive result in three of its lat four visits against Depor (two draws and the 2-1 win of the season 2006/2007).

This is the second confrontation between these two clubs within the last four days, in this occasion Deportivo and Sevilla battle for a top place in la liga, the winner will have the privilege to reach the Champions League zone, at least until Sunday in the case of Depor. Another common thing between both teams are the numbers in the competition, Sevilla has scored 24 goals after 17 matchdays, just two more than Depor. Meanwhile the Andalusians have leaked 19 goals and represent the second best defence in la liga (Barca is 1st with eleven goals allowed), in the meantime Depor is third in that list with 19 goals leaked.

But the big difference between Depor and Sevilla are the moment lived by both teams. The media and part of the public are extremely upset with the work of coach Manolo Jimenez, the Andalusian club achieved important victories against Real Madrid at the Bernabe?? (4-3) and Villarreal at the Pizju??n (1-0), but everything was forgotten as the squad could just draw with last places Mallorca (0-0) and Osasuna (1-1) during the last two matchdays. Meanwhile Depor arrives after finally reaching the UEFA zone and after adding the solid mark of six liga victories in its last eight confrontations.

Coach Lotina will repeat a lineup in la liga for the third straight occasion, something that occurs for the first time on the season. The Basque coach used the rotations in the last Copa match with Sevilla, and for this occasion he is ready to present the same starting eleven that defeated Getafe on the last weekend and that also trashed Recreativo at the end of 2008.

Only Albert Lopo and Manuel Pablo will repeat their participation compared to the squad that played at the S??nchez Pizju??n on Wednesday. Daniel Aranzubia returns to the goal and the defensive zone will be completed with Filipe Luis playing at the left-back position and Portuguese Z? Castro performing alongside Lopo at the centre.

In midfield Sergio and Juan Rodr?guez will perform as the pivotes of the 4-2-3-1 formation. Angel Lafita, who played a couple of minutes in Copa, will cover the right wing and Andr?s Guardado, man that was rested on Wednesday, will perform on the left. Finally Joan Verd?? will be the playmaker in the scheme and Rodolfo Bodipo the lonely striker.

There’s a curious story with Bodipo, the striker was born in Andalusia though he plays for Equatorial Guinea, he briefly played at Sevilla’s young squads, but left the club soon, as he explained to newspaper La Opini??n A Coru?a, ?I was a little kid and I wanted to leave, because I was missing Dos Hermanas (the town were he was born), especially all my friends. I was a little kid and I wanted to play with them. I talked with my father and asked to be taken out of Sevilla. He respected my decision, though I was ten, and I appreciate my all my heart that he heard me.?

Another curiosity is that Bodipo confessed that he always preferred Betis, the natural nemesis of Sevilla FC. All eyes all over the Andalusian forward as he has scored a goal in his last three official matches, including the goal that gave the pass in UEFA during the home match against Nancy-Lorraine.

Meanwhile, Daniel Aranzubia was talking about what Deportivo could achieve in case of a victory in this game, ?The luck has decided that we should play this three straight matches and that’s what we will do no matter you like it or not. We are motivated for the fact that we can pass Sevilla and that we can reach the Champions League places. We know the entire second round still there and that there’s a long way ahead.?

For this game, Lotina has decided to leave out of the list four of the eleven men that were starters in Copa: Julian De Guzm??n, Diego Colotto, Cristian and Pablo ?lvarez, while Antonio Barrag??n and Gustavo Mun??a are out if his plans for the season. Mista is already recovered from an abductor injury, but it’s too soon for him and he was left out of the confrontation. Therefore Pablo Amo is the only player at the injury room. The Madrilenian central defender might join the group in February after last year’s operation (Achilles).
List of called players (18): Aranzubia, Fabricio (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Z? Castro, Lopo, Filipe, Laure, Adri??n L??pez ?Piscu’ (defenders); Sergio, Juan Rodr?guez, Antonio Tom??s, Lafita, Guardado, Verd??, Valer??n (midfielders); Bodipo, Omar Bravo and Riki (strikers).

Coach Manolo Jim?nez is facing the game with nine casualties at his squad, eight of them for injury reasons: keeper Javi Varas, defenders Javi Navarro (knee), Abdoulay Konko (abductor), Fazio (ankle), Aquivaldo Mosquera (ankle) and the strikers Lautaro Acosta (knee sprain), Javier Chevant??n (knee) and Arouna Kone (knee ligaments). The other absentee is Aldo Duscher who is suspended after picking a fifth yellow card in la liga during the last game with Osasuna.

No matter the problems, Jim?nez is able to send the same starting eleven that defeated Depor on Wednesday, though the Andalusian coach will make two chances. The first one is the forced substitution of Duscher, the place of the Argentine will be covered by French Koffi Romaric who will play alongside Maresca in midfield. The other change is the appearance of Adriano replacing Diego Capel at the left wing. The Brazilian replaced Capel during the Copa match with Depor and gave a lot of troubles to Depor’s defence during the few minutes he spent on the pitch.

The rest should be the same squad, with Andr?s Palop at the goal, Fernando Navarro at the left-back position, the duo Julien Escude- Sebastien Squillaci at the centre of the defence, Jos? Angel Crespo at the right spot, Jes??s Navas covering the right wing, and the deadly duo Luis Fabiano-Frederic Kanout? in attack. This means the same 4-4-2 scheme used in Copa.

The casualties, however, are forcing Jim?nez to complete the list of players for the game with youngster coming from Sevilla Atletico. That’s why keeper Juan Mart?n, midfielder Miguel Angel Cordero and Finland striker Teemu Pukki were picked for the trip to La Coru?a.

No matter the two goals scored against Depor on Wednesday, the capacity to score goals is something that continues to worry Sevilla’s fans. And it’s that the Andalusian squad has just scored 24 goals on the season, mark that’s the second worst between the first twelve places in la liga (the worst one is Depor with 22). The mark is also far from the 75 goals conquered on the past liga campaign.

List of called players: (19) Palop, Juan Mart?n (goalkeepers); Crespo, Escud?, David Prieto, Dragutinovic, Fernando Navarro, Squillaci (defenders); Jes??s Navas Tom de Mul, Maresca, Romaric, Renato, Cordero, Adriano, Diego Capel (strikers); Pukki, Luis Fabiano and Kanout? (strikers).

Deportivo: Aranzubia - Manuel Pablo, Lopo, Z? Castro, Filipe - Sergio, Juan Rodr?guez - Lafita, Verd??, Guardado - Bodipo.
Sevilla: Palop - Crespo, Escud?, Squillaci, Fernando Navarro - Jes??s Navas, Romaric, Maresca, Adriano - Luis Fabiano, Kanout?.
