Squad news

Lotina still doubting about what lineup should be used against the Andalusian team, he will release the list of picked players until this morning. Meanwhile, Jim?nez is ready to send his best squad for this game, just as he did in the first-leg and in liga.

This is the third confrontation in a week against Sevilla FC, and the Andalusians have won the previous two encounters. But there’s an interesting statistic that invites to the optimism: In a Copa Del Rey series and playing the first-leg away from home, Deportivo has lost seven times with a 1-2 score, and in those seven previous series the Galician squad was able to pass to the following round after achieving the comeback at the Riazor. The last time was on the season 1991/1992 as Depor passed over UD Levante in the second-leg (5-1)

The other six opportunities in which this situation was repeated was against Arenteiro (1988/89, 5-2 aggregate score), Linares (1984/85, 2-2, advanced through penalties), Ourense (1983/84, 4-3), Cultural Leonesa (1973/74, 3-3 advanced in penalties), Abaran (1963/1964, 3-2) and Almeria (1959/1960, 4-2). In order to advance, Deportivo needs a 1-0 victory, in case the Sevillians score at least one goal, the Galician side will at least need to win by a difference of two goals.

Without doubt, this is the match on the present season that’s giving more doubts to coach Miguel Angel Lotina, to the point that he hasn’t decided yet the lineup or the list of players for the game. After the liga match against the same Sevilla, he said that he would play in Copa with the same starting eleven that faced the first-leg, but by Tuesday his ideas were totally different as he warned that Depor might use a similar squad to the one saw on Saturday..

To make things worse, there are more doubts due the physical problems of some players. Albert Lopo is suffering a problem in a toe since Saturday, while Laure and Manuel Pablo are suffering muscular injuries. Besides Riki is already discarded for the game due to flu. All of this added to the facts that Depor needs a victory in this game, and that on Saturday the Galician squad visits the all mighty Barcelona at the Cam Nou.

Lotina has insinuated he might use the same starting eleven in both Copa and liga matches against Sevilla and Barca, but he also said he might introduce changes for both confrontations. Reason why the lineup is a complete mystery, at least until the list of picked players is revealed on Wednesday’s morning. In defence the only players that seem to have a fixed place are goalkeeper Fabricio and left-back Filipe Luis.

The rest of the defensive line will depend of the evolution in the cases of Lopo, Manuel Pablo and Laure, something that opens the possibility to Ze Castro, Diego Colotto and Piscu, this last player might end performing as a right-back in case that Manuel Pablo and Laure are not recovered from their problems.

The mystery continues in midfield, Antonio Tom??s and Julian De Guzman seems to have bigger chances to appear since the beginning, but Lotina might be tempted to use Sergio and Juan Rodr?guez , two men in form playing for la liga. Pablo ?lvarez has also big chances to appear at the right wing, same thing that Juan Carlos Valer??n in the playmaking function. More doubtful is who will cover the left wing, place that could be for Cristian or Andr?s Guardado. Finally, in the striking position, with Riki out and with Mista out of shape, Rodolfo Bodipo has the advantage over Omar Bravo.

In the middle of all this doubts, winger Pablo ?lvarez talked at Abegondo’s press room after Tuesday’s training, he assured that Depor has enough quality to eliminate Sevilla, ?Yes it is possible, they are favourites, they are a bigger team and have a favourable result, but we have our own weapons and we are playing at home. We know that if we win, we have good chances to advance in Copa. Sevilla must be defeated defending very well, because they have dangerous people up front. If we don’t do all things fine and if we miss fortune, it will be impossible to defeat them.?

List of called players: It will be released until Wednesday.

Coach Manolo Jim?nez is little by little recovering his injured players, starting with Javier Chevant??n who was picked for the game after a three-month absence due to a knee injury. He won’t be a starter and could be left out of the bench since Sevilla is traveling with 17 men to La Coru?a (only five replacements are allowed on the bench), but the presence of the Uruguayan is always important since he could be a revulsive in case things get complicated.

Also, Jim?nez knows that the advantage in the series is not definitive, reason why he is planning to present his best squad at the Riazor, just like he did in the first-leg and on Saturday’s liga match. Basically, it’s the same 4-4-2 scheme that played at the S??nchez Pizju??n. In defence Andr?s Palop will be at the goal, Jos? Angel Crespo at the right-back position, Fernando Navarro at the left, while the duo Julien Escude- Sebastien Squillaci will play at the centre.

In midfield Aldo Duscher is returning after missing the liga game due suspension, he will play alongside Koffi Romaric, while both wins will be territory of Jes??s Navas and Brazilian Adriano. Finally, in attack, Jim?nez is ready to send Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanout?, couple that has made a lot of damage against Depor within the last week.

The only youngster in the list of picked players is Finland striker Teemu Pukki, he was called in case than Chevant??n is not fit to play. Abdoulay Konko is out with a muscular injury, while Ivica Dragutinovic, Federico Fazio, Aquivaldo Mosquera and Lautaro Acosta were not called for the occasion. Enzo Maresca is suspended after been sent off in the last liga match.

Duscher was talking about the fact of been facing his former club, ?After seven years in A Coru?a, I achieved pretty things and everything was fine. It is weird to have the shirt of Deportivo in front of me. But now I want to pass this series. We go there for a triumph because we know it is going to be complicated, the score is a little short, but the advantage is at our side, at least for now.?

Meanwhile, Javier Chevant??n confessed that he is not planning to play against Depor though Manolo Jimenez is the one that will decide at the end, ?I have waited for three months due the long recovery, and four days before a game I don’t want to force myself and suffer a relapse. I can not discard that, but for now the weekend’s game is my priority.?
