The victory against Athletic is leaving intact the European aspirations of Deportivo. The game also meant the twelfth clean sheet on the liga season. And all of this with a couple of central defenders that were completing their first game together in the competition.

Pablo Alvarez’s goal at San Mam?©s gave three golden points to Deportivo in its quest for Europe, but all the merits of the victory should go for the defensive line, because it was able to contain the aerial power of the Basques and allowed a new clean sheet on the season, the twelfth on the liga campaign and the twentieth in all the competitions disputed on the season (liga, Copa, UEFA and Intertoto).

And it’s that the previous clean sheet was conquered seven matchdays ago as Deportivo achieved a 1-0 win at Numancia. After that, Lotina’s squad only added four points in five matchdays allowing twelve goals. But now it seems things in defence are returning to normal mode, important thing taking in mind that defence hasn’t been the strongest line on the season and the main reason why Depor is currently fighting for a European spot.

An additional merit in the last clean sheet conquered is the fact the duo at the centre of the defence, Diego Colotto and Z?© Castro, couple that joined the squad in the past summer window, was performing together for the first time on the liga season. They have just played together for 40 minutes during the second-leg in Copa against Sevilla FC and also in the UEFA clash with Brann at the Riazor, tough in that occasion Depor was playing with a system using three central defenders.

Another man to be emphasised is Daniel Aranzubia, the Basque keeper washed away his ghosts at San Mam?©s and brought a solid performance that also explains why Depor returned to La Coru?±a with the three points in the bag.

The mark of 12 clean sheets in liga and 20 in all the competitions represent a solid record for Deportivo compared to recent seasons, but still far from the all-time record achieved during the 1993/1994 campaign: 29 clean sheets in 46 official games (26 in liga, 1 in Copa Del Rey and 2 in the UEFA Cup.)
