Four matchdays before the end of the liga season and Depor still with only one goal scored in a direct free-kick, and this taking in mind the Galicians have made 35 attempts. Valencia is the only side at Primera that hasn’t scored yet through a free-kick.

As RDLDC.com informed at the beginning of April, Depor is missing a free-kick specialist on this season. And it’s that after 35 attempts in la liga, the players at the squad have only scored once during a direct free-kick. It was the goal of Angel Lafita against Malaga FC during the first round match. And it should be emphasised that that goal had the collaboration of keeper Goitia, who failed to contain the drilling shot of the Aragonian winger.

It should be also appointed that the other teams at Primera Divisi??n neither have been so effective in this department, because the leader so far is Real Betis with only four goals scored through a direct free-kick. At the other side, Valencia is the only club that hasn’t scored yet a goal on this kind of actions.

Joan Verd?? and Sergio are the two players with more attempts (eight each one), while Andr?s Guardado has seven. Verd?? was commenting to newspaper La Voz de Galicia why the squad is not succeeding with this kind of plays, ?Maybe we are missing effectiveness. The true is that we don’t train too much the direct free-kicks, maybe on some Saturdays, from time to time, it isn’t something habitual. I scored some at Barcelona B; the case is that the ball hasn’t entered on here.?

Similar was the explanation made by Guardado, ?The true is that there’s no time to practice. You try to test in some occasions, but due the tireness they don’t let you, they send you out of the pitch, to the locker room, and there’s no time to practice.? Curiously, the Mexican scored one with his national team during this season (against Jamaica).

The lack of effectiveness at Depor in free-kicks can also be extended to all the actions in strategic plays, something that was a fortress with Joaqu?n Caparr??s.  And it’s that Deportivo has only scored four goals in set-pieces during the liga season: 2 times Vs Real Madrid (matchday 01), Vs Numancia (matchday 06) and Vs Malaga (matchday 14) Curiously, all the goals scored at the Riazor. Those four goals only represents the 14th best mark at Primera Divisi??n, Racing Santander is the leader on this department with 14 goals scored through set-pieces.

Coach Miguel Angel Lotina was admitting the lack of a specialist at Deportivo, ?We don’t have a Beckham, we have a Sergio, who by the way knows how to striker the ball. But in a general sense, the good free-kick takers don’t give you on the field what you need… you have to compensate. There are some cases like Yeste or Duda, who give you set-pieces and also movement on the pitch, it isn’t easy. You can only find a few. It is important to be a specialist, but you need also to look what he can give you on the pitch.?
