REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1 – GETAFE 1 (LIGA)

16 May 2009
Insufficient result for both teams, Deportivo waked up until the final five minutes to pick up a point against an ordered Getafe that hasn’t secured yet the permanence. Lotina was so desperate that during the game, he switched the formation three times.

BEFORE THE GAME
Lotina surprised with the introduction of Angel Lafita to the starting lineup; the Aragonian was replacing Pablo Alvarez on the formation. The rest was the same squad that defeated Recreativo, with Bodipo upfront and with the trio Lafita-Verd??-Guardado playing behind him. Juan Rodr?guez was completing his game number 150 at Primera Divisi??n.

At Getafe, meanwhile, coach Michel was sending the expected starting formation. With Casquero and Celestini trying to control midfield. In attack, Granero, Uche and Soldado were the main references. The visitors were needing a win and a defeat of Sporting Gij??n against Malaga to secure the permanence.

FIRST HALF
No matter been near to the drop zone, Getafe proved to be a very uncomfortable rival for Deportivo. And it’s that the Madrilenians controlled the actions during big part of the game, especially within the first 30 minutes  At Depor, Lotina was trying to surprise as Guardado and Lafita switched their positions on both wings, something that has been very common in other matches.

But Depor didn’t have the needed depth in order to create troubles to visiting keeper Ustari, while Getafe was having the ball possession and menacing the local team through a series of corner-kicks. At minute 5, the visitors had their first approximation of the night as Casquero attempted a mid-distance shot that went wide, then minutes later the midfielder left the pitch injured after a challenge with Juan Rodriguez, he was replaced by ex-Atletico Madrid Contra.

At minute 9, Granero appeared for the first time after a pass from Uche, but his shot from long-range went wide. Deportivo appeared in attack until minute 15, it was a corner-kick of Guardado that nobody at Getafe could clear and that Verd?? found inside the area, but his final effort missed the target.

Then Getafe had a new approximation, Verd?? fouled Contra near to midfield, then Alb?n sent a cross to the area that Soldado headed on target, Aranzubia made a great save though the play was already invalidated due to offside. Before this play, Granero had a new attempt from mid-distance, but Aranzubia controlled the ball. This was the last appearance in attack for ?The Pirate’.

Getafe seemed very comfortable over the grass, but the Madrilenians weren’t capitalizing their dominance and never created a clear chance against Aranzubia. More lost was Deportivo, the Galicians were having big problems trying to overcome Contra and Celestini, Juan Rodr?guez was very active and gave a hard battle in midfield, but the offensive tasks of Depor were simply insistent. The switch between Lafita and Guardado wasn’t working, and neither Verd?? was appearing.

But a slightly change started at minute 33, the locals stated to push up front and the Galician team had three opportunities before half-time. Starting with a cross of Guardado that Lafita met at the far post, but the header of the Aragonian was stopped by Ustari. Then Verd?? appeared for the first time to release a great pass to Bodipo, but Getafe’s keeper arrived first to the ball (34’).

And the best chance of the first part came at minute 38, it was in favour of Deportivo. ?Cata’Diaz committed a foul over Verd?? at one side, then the Catalan sent a cross to the area that nobody at Getafe could clear, Bodipo found the ball almost at the far post, but his header was saved by Ustari at the goal line.

Getafe had the last chance of the first half with a shot of Alb?n that was stopped without problems by Aranzubia (44’). It was a boring first half, the Madrilenians controlled the actions during big part of the time, but they never had a clear chance. Meanwhile, Depor was lost until it appeared three times during the final ten minutes, the main opportunity was the one of Bodipo.

SECOND HALF
There was no time to judge if the second part was going to be a repetition of the boredom during the initial 45 minutes, because Getafe scored its goals just 30 seconds after the pause. Depor lost the ball in the kick-off, and the counterattack ended with a cross of Cortes to the area, Roberto Soldado was there alone to head the ball at the far post as Manuel Pablo was only watching him, the ball hit the crossbar before going to the back of the net. It is the 12th goal in liga for the ex-Real Madrid striker.

Depor tried to react immediately and Bodipo had another chance just three minutes after the goal, but Ustari stopped his short-range effort after a cross from Guardado. Then the Galicians gained the ball possession, but the locals weren’t having clear opportunities to score. Then, after fifteen minutes in the second part, Lotina decided to switch the system as he allowed the entry of Riki and Pablo Alvarez for Verd?? and Lafita.

It seemed the modifications would bring more dynamism to Depor’s attack, but it was quite the opposite, the game became more paused and balanced in midfield. The only occasion in which the offensive power of Depor appeared was at minute 63, again through Bodipo, but he missed a cross of Riki after a collective play of Deportivo.

Meanwhile, Getafe was trying to lose some time, several players very exaggerating the fouls as they stayed on the ground after the infraction, while coach Michel put his son, Adri??n Gonz??lez, on the pitch trying to increase the pressure in midfield, he replaced Soldado. Depor appeared until minute 75 as Bodipo assisted Guardado with a header that left the Mexican alone against Ustari, but the ex-Atlas winger missed the target from close range as he just hit the net by the outside.

Lotina was desperate and ten minutes before the end, he switched the system again as Valer??n replaced Bodipo, again the Galician team was playing with a 4-2-3-1 figure. And again the local formation was failing to create any kind of opportunity against Getafe’s goal. Depor was making combinations and trying to keep the ball over the grass, but without enjoying of a clear chance.

The desperation and nervousness at Depor just created cracks at Depor’s defence, and Uche was close to capitalise this situation, the Nigerian bet the offside trap as he ran from midfield to collect a pass of Cortes, but Aranzubia made an important save facing the striker one-on-one and clearing the ball to corner-kick (80’).

And just when it seemed that Depor would suffer the fourth defeat in liga at the Riazor, and with only five minutes remaining in the clock, Valer??n appeared to light the way of Deportivo. Because it was the Canarian who started the play of the equaliser, he made a great pass to see Manuel Pablo assisting Guardado with a drilling pass, the assist left the Mexican alone inside the area and he released a shot that Ustari could only deflect, then Riki arrived to score his sixth goal in liga.

The goal turned the last minutes into an excitement game, with a Deportivo that was close to score for the second time as the home squad attacked with desperation, Getafe just tried to hold at the back zone the late reaction of Lotina’s side, but the Madrilenians were the ones that enjoyed of the last chance of the night through a wide shot of Manu Del Moral (90+3’)

AFTER THE GAME
Very poor presentation of Deportivo, just in the day in which the Galician squad was trying to consolidate its European options, the team of Lotina disappointed the fans at the Riazor as it constantly failed in attack against an order rival that just capitalised a distraction after the kick-off of the second part. The Galicians just created danger during the final minutes of both parts, and Riki appeared to save a point five minutes before the final whistle. The locals even had the chance to pick up the win as they harassed the visiting area at the end, but the true is that the draw is a fair result due the things done by both sides on the pitch.

The result is just insufficient for both sides, because Depor lost its UEFA spot after Villarreal defeated real Madrid (3-2), while Getafe is not saved yet. Lotina’s team returns to occupy the seventh spot. The next game of Deportivo is the visit to the Sanchez Pizju??n in order to face Sevilla FC, the date and hour of the encounter hasn’t been established yet since la liga will make the schedule in the next days according to the results of the weekend, this since the tournament is reaching its final two matchdays.
