REVIEW SEASON 08/09: STATS

02 Jun 2009
Without doubt the best season of Deportivo within the last five years, the squad broke all the marks since the Champions League years with the exception of the number of goals allowed.

The season 2008/2009 has meant an improvement for Deportivo’s statistics within the last five years, and it’s that Lotina’s team broke all the marks achieved in the previous four campaigns, the only exception is the number of goals allowed. Depor leaked 47 goals in the season that hast just ended, that’s two more goals compared to both years with Joaqu?n Caparr??s (45, 2005/2006 - 2006/2007).

It was the season number 39 for Deportivo at Primera Divisi??n, and for the 15th occasion, the Galician squad ended at or above the 7th place. This seventh place represents the best position of Depor since the third spot of the 2003/2004 campaign. Also, the team added 68 points in 38 matches (59.64% of the points in dispute), once again the best mark since the Champions League years

Depor added 16 victories on the liga campaign, again the highest number since the season 2003/2004 and the 12th occasion in which the team achieves a similar or better mark at Primera Divisi??n. With Bodipo’s goal in the last matchday against Barcelona, the team reached the mark of 48 goals scored on the liga season, just one more than the 47 conquered with Caparr??s on the 20052/2006 campaign. That number, however, is far from the historic record of the season 2000/2001 (73).

It was also the best season at home for Deportivo within the last five years, because Lotina’s men added 36 points at the Riazor only losing three games, but the team only added 22 points playing away from home, it’s the same lark of the past campaign and it’s far from the 32 points added with Caparr??s during the 2005/2006 campaign.

Another mark broke during the season is the number of consecutive games scoring at least one goal. Depor scored at least once in all the games disputed between matchdays 24 and 36, this means 12 straight matchdays. It’s the best mark since the 18 consecutive games with at least one goal during the season 2002/2003. Finally, the team clinched 14 clean sheets, two less than the number had with Caparr??s on the 2006/2007 campaign.

About the stats related to the performance inside the pitch, the true is that the numbers were mediocre compared to the other twenty teams at the league. Depor was the 11th side in la liga in terms of attempts to score (479), but only 37.58% of those efforts (180) represented a shot on target, that’s just the 12th best mark at Primera Divisi??n. Depor was also the 2nd team that hit the post in more opportunities (15 times). About the number of passes that were completed, Depor fulfilled 10,912 (287 per match), that’s only the 9th best record in la liga. In terms of crosses to the area, Depor completed 1,122 (29.53 per match), that’s just the seventh highest mark at Primera.

An interesting fact is that Depor’s players were caught in 120 opportunities in offside position (average of 3.16 per match), that’s the fourth highest number in la liga. At the same time, Depor’s defense provoked 104 offsides (2.74 per game), only the 12th best mark at Primera. Also, the Galician team stole the ball in 1,977 opportunities (52.03 per game), mark that was only the 14th highest at Primera, at the same time Depor lost the ball 2,824 times (74.32 per game), the 12th mark in la liga.

Finally, the only good’ stat of the team is related to the yellow cards, Depor’s men were booked in 89 opportunities (2.34 per match), only Barcelona (77) presented a better number. This situation is a consequence of the number of committed fouls: 522 (13.74 per match), also the second lowest mark after Barcelona (484). About the number of foul suffered, Depor’s players were fouled in 622 opportunities (16.37 per game), that’s the 11th highest number in la liga.
