New victory for a Deportivo that was very serious in defence and that capitalised a new set-piece to pick up the points. The entry of Juan Rodriguez was crucial, while Lopo and Colotto made a great game; they even fabricated the play of the goal.

Antonio Tomás was the surprise in the lineup of Deportivo, the Cantabrian midfielder was taking the place of Juca alongside Sergio, the rest was the expected squad, with Dani Aranzubia at the goal, Manuel Pablo at the right-back position, Filipe Luis on the left, Diego Colotto and Albert Lopo at the centre of the defence; Pablo Alvarez covering the right wing and Andrés Guardado attacking from the left side. Lassad Nouioui and Riki were the attackers.

In Tenerife coach José Luis Oltra was presenting the expected 4-2-3-1 formation, with Aitor Salvador Nuñez and Pablo Sicilia replacing the casualties of Marc Bertrán at the right side and Manolo Martínez at the centre of the defence. In attack, Juan Francisco Martínez, 'Nino' and Alejandro Alfaro were the main references.

It was an intensive start, with two squads that were searching for the opposite goal. Depor had the first approximation of the game through a corner-kick of Sergio that was searching for Guardado, but the ball was cleared by Aitor Nuñez, the locals responded with a drilling pass of Kome to Nino, but the striker was offside (3’).

One minute later Román headed a cross of Aitor Núñez, but the ball went over the crossbar. In the next play a combination between Guardado and Riki was close to find Pablo Alvarez inside the area, but the ball was cleared by a rival to a corner-kick. Depor had four corners within the first ten minutes, but this time the Galicians weren’t capitalizing the set-pieces, at least in the first part.

At minute 12, Manuel Pablo lost the ball and Argentine Román attempted from mid-distance, but his drilling shot was stopped by Aranzubia. Despite been the local side, Tenerife was feeling more comfortable playing through long throws and with Kome very active in the match, while Depor was having the ball possession and insisting by the left side of Guardado and Filipe, though the Mexican was also exchanging positions with Pablo Alvarez at the wings.

At the 22nd minute Richi headed a long cross of Nino and the ball went over the crossbar, Depor responded with a free-kick of Sergio in which the ball was sent to the area, Colotto found the cross, but his header also went over the bar. It was the best approximation of Deportivo within the first 25 minutes of the match. But it wouldn’t be the last appearance of the Argentine in attack.

Tenerife had a new attempt to score after a corner-kick, Richi assisted Román, but Aranzubia stopped the shot of the Argentine midfielder (25’). Two minutes later Mikel Alonso attempted from mid-distance, but the ball went out. With the pass of the minutes, the Canarians were taking the initiative, while the dominance of Depor was fading away. Kome, Román and Nino were the best players at the local team, while Colotto was the best defender at Depor, always appearing to clear the danger.

The best chance for Tenerife in the first half came at minute 32, again it was a combination between Roman and Nino that ended with a dangerous shot of the striker that passed near the right post of Aranzubia. Depor responded with a long range shot of Guardado that was saved by Aragoneses (35’), then the Mexican appeared again making a great solo-play on the left wing, his cross was sent to the path of Lassad, but the Tunisian couldn’t reach the ball and Aragoneses cleared it.

It was an equal and entertaining first part, with both Tenerife and Deportivo trying to reach the opposite goal, but the problem was that the lack of aim: the locals only completed two shots on target, while Depor only one. The trio Kome-Román-Nino was the best thing in the local team, while Guardado was the most active player in attack for Depor, at the back-zone Colotto and Lopo were very serious. The half ended with a dangerous free-kick of Alfaro that went out and the response was a corner-kick of Sergio in which Lopo missed the target. Dangerous actions at both goals and all in a matter of two minutes, which demonstrated the parity in the game.

Lotina introduced a change as Lassad was replaced by Juan Rodriguez, the modification meant to switch the system into a 4-3-3, with three pivotes in midfield and with Riki alone at the centre of the attack and with Guardado and Pablo Alvarez moving from the centre to the wings. And it was a right move, because the Andalusian gave more secureness to Depor’s midfield and also because he was very active acting like the link with the attacking zone

As it happened in the first part, the first approximation was for the visitors, it was a long distance shot of Riki after the Madrilenian saw that Aragoneses was out of position, but his effort just went close to the crossbar. Within the first minutes, the Galicians were more defensive and spent the time at their zone, while they were searching for a counterattack in the quest for its second win away from home.

Tenerife insisted in this moment of the match, at the 51st minute Román tested from the edge of the area, but his shot was stopped by Aranzubia.  Then the best moment of Depor arrived, between minutes 57 and 63, the visitors pushed hard until they scored the lonely goal of the game. First a great pass of Guardado left Juan Rodriguez alone against Aragoneses, but the ex-Malaga was too slow and the danger was cleared. In the resulting corner-kick a foul was committed over Filipe, and the Brazilian was close to score after Guardado made a short pass to Filipe, then he sent a cross that hit a rival and that Aragoneses cleared to a new corner-kick.

In the resulting corner-kick –the second in a row- Juan Rodriguez was close to find the ball after a shot of Riki, but Aragoneses appeared again to send the ball to corner, then, and after the third straight corner-kick, Depor found the decisive goal. Sergio sent the cross and Lopo headed the ball at the near post, then it reached Diego Colotto at the far post and the Argentine headed the ball into the net.

Oltra reacted putting two more strikers on the pitch as Omar replaced Richi, while ex-Celta Dinei did the same with right-back Aitor Núñez , but Tenerife was mentally blocked, actually it was Depor the closest side to score a new goal. At minute 62, Riki missed a good pass of Guardado and the ball was cleared by Luna. Five minutes later Colotto enjoyed of a new chance after a new corner of Sergio, but this time the defender sent the ball out.

Then Bodipo debuted on the season as he replaced Riki. Tenerife wasn’t the same offensive team of the first part, but the entry of Dinei gave more power to the locals and they pushed hard within the last twenty minutes. At minute 72, Nino made a solo-play and attempted from close range, but Aranzubia made the save and later Filipe cleared the danger. Five minutes later a cross of Kome was headed by Alfaro, but the ball went out.

Lotina knew the result was not secured, and he allowed the entry of Mista for Pablo Alvarez, modification that was putting fresh legs at the right side of the pitch. Eight minutes before the end, Bodipo had the occasion to define the things, it was a counterattack started by Antonio Tomas, but the Equatoguinean sent the ball over the crossbar just when Aragoneses was already defeated. In the final minutes nothing more happened as Depor wasted the time moving the ball at the corners of the pitch.

Third straight victory for Deportivo and third straight clean sheet for Lotina’s team. The Galicians made their best presentation in defence during the current liga season, with both Colotto and Lopo giving secureness at the back-zone, while Guardado was the most active player in attack. But the decisive move was the entry of Juan Rodriguez, which gave the control of the match to Depor during the second half. In the end the goal came in a new set-piece, this time with Sergio throwing a corner that was materialized after a combination between Lopo and Colotto.

The win allows Depor to reach the fourth place at Primera División, on the next weekend there is no activity in la liga due to the World Cup qualifying games, the competition returns in a fortnight as Sevilla FC visits the Riazor.
