PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – SEVILLA (18h00 CET)

17 Oct 2009
Important match between the third and the fourth place in liga; Lotina presents the same squad that defeated Tenerife with the exception of Juan Rodriguez replacing Antonio Tomas, while Sevilla suffers three important casualties.

STATISTICS: DOMINANCE OVER SEVILLA?
Sevilla FC spent fifty years without defeating Deportivo, but within the last five seasons the Andalusians have achieved two victories and two draws at the Riazor, plus two additional victories playing for Copa Del Rey. Actually, Sevilla has only lost one of its last seven official matches in La Coruña. The only win for Depor came on the season 2007/08 with goals from Wilhelmsson and Lafita (2-1). Globally, Sevilla has won the last four meetings against Deportivo, because on the past season the Andalusians won the two legs in Copa plus the two matches in la liga.

It will be an interesting confrontation between the third and fourth place at Primera División; Sevilla has only lost one official game on the season (0-2 at Valencia, matchday 01) and is the only side that has defeated Real Madrid, reason why they are third on the standings. Meanwhile Depor has achieved three straight victories and has climbed in the table after suffering two defeats in the first three matches.

One of the impressing things about these two teams is the numbers of goals scored: Sevilla is the third best offensive team with 14 goals after 6 matchdays, while Depor is fifth in this department with 10. Actually, Deportivo has scored at least one goal within its last seven matches in la liga. Both clubs are also shinning in defence, because Sevilla is the second best defence with only 4 goals allowed, while Depor is fourth on this list with 6. Both clubs have clinched three clean sheets so far, which is the second best record at Primera, just behind Real Madrid and Barcelona (4).

DEPORTIVO: DEFENCE AGAINST OFFENSE
Lotina’s Deportivo is, little by little, regaining the defensive solidity that was the base for last season’s good results. The Galicians allowed six goals within the first three matchdays, but in each one of last three liga encounters the team clinched a clean sheet. It’s just the second time since Lotina’s arrival that Depor adds three straight games without leaking a goal. The previous occasion was between matchdays 32 and 34 of the season 2007/08 (3-0 Vs Athletic, 1-0 at Osasuna and 2-0 Vs Barcelona). Even Aranzubia is close to break his personal mark of minutes without leaking a goal (357, he needs 51 minutes to break it)

But now the Galicians are not only facing the third best offensive team in la liga, but the rival that has scored more goals against them within the past three years, because the Andalusians have scored twenty-two goals against Deportivo within the last three seasons (8 matches: 12 goals in liga and 10 in Copa Del Rey); and with each Frederic Kanoute and Luis Fabiano scoring five times against Depor. At least the Brazilian will not play at the Riazor since he will be rested for the Champions League visit to VfB Stuttgart (Tuesday).

Besides, Depor’s players are aware of the four defeats suffered on the past campaign against the Andalusians, as Aranzubia was appointing, “We remember the four matches of the past season, because three were straight matches and it angered us. Anyhow this isn’t for revenge, but we wan to defeat them and forget that dark memory, though during the game we won’t think of the past.”

About the lineup for the game, coach Miguel Angel Lotina has decided to put his three international players directly into the starting eleven after the three of them were starters in midweek action. Tunisian Lassad Nouioui arrived late on Thursday, while Mexican Andrés Guardado and Brazilian Filipe Luis did it on Friday’s morning, these last two men only trained a few minutes during the last session before the game. Lotina warned that Guardado is tired after the long trip, but despite the situation the ex-Atlas will be a starter in the game.

In the end it will be a similar formation compared to the one that defeated Tenerife a fortnight ago, the only difference is the entry of Juan Rodriguez in midfield replacing Antonio Tomás, who according to Lotina is suffering a small problem. Aranzubia will be the goalkeeper, Manuel Pablo will perform at the right-back position, Filipe will play on the left side, Colotto and Lopo at the centre, Sergio and Juan Rodríguez on the pivote tasks; Pablo Alvarez on the right wing, Guardado on the left, Lassad on the playmaking function and Riki will be the lonely attacker. The Madrilenian I completing 100 appearances at Primera.

Brazilian midfielder Juca still out due to a muscular problem (intramuscular edema), and he has been joined at the injury room by Portuguese Zé Castro (rectus muscle of thigh, anterior) and Equatoguinean striker Rodolfo Bodipo (muscular). That’s why Lotina has picked Piscu, Angulo and Iván Pérez, three players that have barely participated on the liga season, actually this is the first time in which Colombian Angulo is picked for a official game

During the week there was a verbal confrontation in the media as Sevilla’s central defender Sergio Sánchez said that “Depor has nothing to do if Sevilla is able to match its best level”, something to which Riki replied “We will see what happens on the pitch, we won’t give anything for free.”. Lopo was also commenting the issue, “Right now we have Barca and Real Madrid, and later we have a different league, with Sevilla at the top, but we will see if they end up there.”

The Catalan defender was also saying that Deportivo has to demonstrate that the fourth place in liga isn’t an accident, “We must confirm all that we are doing until now, in both defensively and at the standings. We will give a huge step forward if we defeat Sevilla, it’s like saying that we are there, I don’t know if it will mean to be fighting at the same height than the others, but wanting to be up there. There’s no better proof than doing it against Sevilla. Maybe we don’t have too much, but we know to seize the little we have. We know our personal limitations and also in a collective sense, and that’s the base.”

List of picked players (20): Aranzubia, Manu (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Laure, Lopo, Colotto, Adrián López ‘Piscu’, Filipe, Angulo (defenders); Juan Rodríguez, Sergio, Antonio Tomás, Pablo Álvarez, Valerón, Guardado, Iván Pérez (midfielders); Lassad, Riki, Adrián López and Mista (strikers).

SEVILLA: THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD DURING SEPTEMBER
The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) announced on the past week that Sevilla FC and Real Madrid FC were the two best clubs in the world during the month of September, and it’s that the Andalusians won the seven matches that they disputed during the month (five in liga and two in Champions League). And it did it achieving an impressive mark of eighteen goals in favour and just two goals allowed. Those numbers resumes the solid moment lived by the team coached by Manolo Jiménez

An interesting thing compared to the past season is that the goals are not only depending of Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute. And it’s that the twenty goals scored in official games during this campaign are distributed between nine men: Luis Fabiano (4), Renato (3), Kanoute (3), Jesús Navas (2), Negredo (2), Perotti (2), Konko (2), Squillaci (1) and Adriano (1)

Luis Fabiano will be rested for the UEFA Champions League competition, he played against Venezuela on Wednesday and coach Jimenez allowed his return from South America until Sunday. Despite his 49 liga goals with Sevilla, the Brazilian is wishing to leave, to remember his failed exit to AC Milan during the summer. Before his return to Spain, he was sending a new message about his intentions, “Other opportunities will knock at the door, my contract is ending and the time is running out, it will make easier my exit.”

Who will replace him is Alvaro Negredo, the ex-Almeria is returning after scoring twice and giving an assist with Spain’s national team (5-2 win over Bosnia), now he wants to keep the momentum, “To play at the national team as a starter was pretty good, I’m content because things were fine and I’m thankful with the coach. Now I’m returning and ready to be part of the game against Deportivo. I want to do at the Riazor the same things I did with the national team; I’m conscious that in order to be picked up again, I need to do the right things,  that’s what’s obsessing me right now.”

Other two important casualties in the starting eleven are Andrés Palop and Sébastien Squillaci, both were left out of the trip to La Coruña due to a muscular injury (Triceps surae), while Fazio (ankle) and Tom de Mul (muscular) still recovering from their long-term injuries. Lautaro Acosta (ankle) is already fit to play, but he was left out of the list, same thing as Javier Chevantón. The casualty of Squillaci is important, but at least the other international players arrived without any problem: Alvaro Negredo (Spain), Julien Escudé (France) and Ivica Dragutinovic (Serbia).

Therefore there are three changes compared to the squad that defeated Real Madrid on the past matchday: Javi Varas is replacing Palop at the goal, the 27-year-old goalie already played three times at Primera and this could be his big chance to prove his value. His replacement on the bench will be Dani Jiménez, who is the keeper of Sevilla Atletico. Meanwhile Sergio Sánchez is taking the place of Squillaci at the centre of the defence; the Catalan was signed from RCD Espanyol during the summer (€5 million). Finally Frederic Kanoute is appearing for Luis Fabiano in attack. Kanoute already scored five times against Depor (four in liga and one in Copa) and Lopo already confessed to have nightmares with him.

The rest will be the usual 4-4-2 formation of Jimenez, with French Abdoulay Konko playing at the right-back position, Ivica Dragutinović joining Sergio Sánchezat the centre of the defence, Brazilian Adriano on the left side, Ivory Cost Didier Zokora and Brazilian Renato in midfield, Spanish wonder kid Jesús Navas attacking by the right wing, Argentine Diego Perotti on the right and the duo Kanouté-Negredo in attack.

It’s a special game for Diego Perroti, because his goal against Depor during the past season gave to Sevilla the pass to the Champions League, something he was remembering, “Until now the most important goal in my life was against Deportivo. That goal allowed us to enter into the Champions League and was also my first goal at Sevilla. That’s why I will never forget Depor, I have it in my heart. It was an incredible moment, I remember that I was very excited and that everybody was jumping on me, everybody was happy.”

Ex-Depor Aldo Duscher is returning to the list after been out for a while due to a muscular injury, he was also taking before the match, “I’m content because I don’t feel any problem, I’m training without feeling pain and that’s the important thing. To go back to La Coruña, where I spent seven years of my career; is always special; it’s always a great joy to go back to the place where I enjoyed of several weeks of good football. Deportivo is behind us and they want to win the game, that’s why we must make our best effort in order to achieve a good result.”

List of picked players (19): Javi Varas, Dani Jiménez (goalkeepers); Konko, Sergio Sanchez, Lolo, Dragutinovic, Escudé, Adriano, Fernando Navarro (defenders); Zokora, Duscher, Romaric, Renato, Jesús Navas, Diego Capel, Perotti (midfielders); Koné, Negredo and Kanouté (strikers).
