Not a good draw for Deportivo in Copa Del Rey; the Galicians will have to face Valencia FC in the last-16 round, and if Lotina’s team pass the round, they will meet Barcelona or Sevilla in quarterfinals. These two rounds will be played in January.

On Tuesday the Spanish Federation held the draw for the rest of the Copa Del Rey tournament, president Augusto César Lendoiro was there and it must be said that it wasn’t a positive result for Deportivo, because in the next two rounds the Galicians could be facing three of the current four top-places at Primera División.

All starts in the last-16 round as Deportivo will face Valencia FC, the current fourth place in la liga. The first-leg will be played at Mestalla on January 6th, 2010 and the second-leg will take place at the Riazor on January 13th, 2010.

It’s the eighth time that these two clubs are meeting each other in Copa. Valencia won’t the first five series (1942-43, 1943-44, 1948-49, 1963-64 and 1990-91), but Depor has won the last two, including the final on the season 1994-95, which meant the first official title for Deportivo. Also, the last meeting is well remembered by all the fans (2005-06), because it was won by Depor with a 2-1 aggregate score after the game at Mestalla was played in two separate days since assistant Egido Rozas was hit by a coin during the encounter.

If Deportivo is able to pass this tough test, then it will meet another complicate meeting, because the winner of the series will play in quarterfinals against the winner of the meeting Barcelona FC Vs Sevilla FC. This last round will be played on January 20 & 27. Therefore, the Galicians will need to play against two of the three top clubs in Spain if they want to reach the semifinals.

About the result of the draw, coach Miguel Angel Lotina told to reporters that he is happy to face the best teams in the competition, “I like the results of the draw, if you want to win something you need to defeat the best ones in the competition, you have to meet them on the way, and we are meeting them now.”

”It’s fine, it’s a complicate game, we all know Valencia, a team with good players and that’s showing a good level. The draw is tough, very tough, but in the other hand we have the chance to see Valencia here. We have to think of the league and we'll see in January. Of the top-five teams in la liga, Real (Madrid) is out and only one of the other four will pass. That’s the draw we have had.“ The Basque added.

Similar were the thoughts of president Lendoiro, “I’m enchanted, because this will allow us to know where is the limit of this Deportivo. It was a passionate draw, beyond the big difficulties we will suffer. First you have to face Valencia, a team against whom we have a special rivalry, which gives a special taste to the series, and then, if you are lucky to past the test, you will meet Sevilla or Barcelona. It’s something to runaway, but at the same time is the reality of football. If you do not defeat the big ones, you can not win the Copa.”
