DEPORTIVO IN THE DECADE 2000-09

25 Dec 2009
Depor ends the period 2000-09 as the fourth best team of the decade, with 607 points added in 378 matches, and with the privilege of been one of the only seven clubs that played the entire period at Primera División.

Thirty-four different clubs had the honour to play at Primera División during the decade 2000-09, and only seven of them were stronger enough to spend the entire period between the Spanish elite: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Deportivo, RCD Mallorca, Athletic Bilbao and RCD Espanyol; something that other historic clubs like Atletico Madrid or Real Zaragoza couldn’t match.

Totally, 3,780 matches were played during the decade and 9,984 goals were scored, which results in an average of 2.64 goals per game. Summing all the points earned by the teams within the last ten years, it’s possible to say that Real Madrid is the best team of the decade as it clinched 32 more points than its nemesis Barcelona FC.

The other two giants of the decade were Valencia and Deportivo, with the Galicians ending fourth with 607 points. The Galician team only had three coaches in the period: Javier Irureta, Joaquin Caparrós and Miguel Angel Lotina, which is the lowest number between the seven clubs that spent the whole decade at Primera División.

Depor was able to add the 59.89% of the points in dispute, while it scored 536 goals and presented an average of 1.42 goals scored per game, in others words the Galician team was scoring a goal every 63 minutes. Besides, the team leaked 441 goals, for an average of 1.17 goals per match, in other words Deportivo was leaking a goal every 77 minutes.

To mention that only eight of the thirty-four clubs that played at Primera during the decade were able to end the period with a positive goal difference, the first six were the teams occupying the six first places in the table of the decade: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Deportivo, Villarreal and Sevilla, while the others two were Atletico Madrid (+36) and Celta (+1). The Madrilenians ended the period in the 11th spot (427 points), while Depor’s nemesis was 17th in the table (347 points)
