DEPOR IN FEBRUARY

02 Feb 2010
Three of the four liga matches on the month will be disputed away from the Riazor; the only home game will be played against the last place at Primera División, therefore Depor will have to defend its European place outside home.

The Copa Del Rey has ended for Deportivo, now Lotina’s team must only focus in la liga and to end the season in a European place. It is a relief after all the injury problems suffered within the last two months. But it won’t be easy, in the month of February the Galician team will play four liga encounters, and three of them will take place away from the Riazor.

Starting with the visit to La Rosaleda in order to face Malaga FC; the Andalusians had a terrible start with seven defeats within the first eleven liga matches, but in the last eleven games in the competition they have just lost once: 0-2 at Real Madrid. Now they are three points above the relegation zone and aspire to climb more positions, therefore it won’t be an easy game for Deportivo. To mention that Malaga will have important casualties in defence: Mtiliga (nose fracture), Weligton (suspended) and Jesús Gámez (knee).

Then Depor will have to visit the new Cornella-El Prat stadium in order to face RCD Espanyol. The Catalans are having a mediocre season, they started well, but the five straight defeats suffered within November and December have left them stuck in nowhere land, at least they have added ten of the last twelve points disputed at home.

CD Xérez represents the only home match on the month; the Andalusians are the last place at Primera División, seven points behind the safety, and just clinched their second win on the liga season with a 2-1 win over Mallorca. To emphasise that Xérez is the worst offensive team in the competition with only ten goals scored after twenty matches, also that their only three points added away from home were goalless matches: 0-0 at Espanyol (matchday 05), 0-0 at Valladolid (matchday 10) and 0-0 at Zaragoza (matchday 18).

Then Depor will end the month with a visit that should be considered as a confrontation against a direct rival: Villarreal FC. However the Valencian team is eight points behind Depor and is arriving after a disastrous month of January, and its that they were eliminated by Celta in Copa and only clinched five of fifteen possible points in the period, reason why coach Ernesto Valverde was fired on Sunday after the defeat with Osasuna, now he will be replaced by the coach of Villarreal B, Juan Carlos Garrido.
