Fifteen matchdays are remaining in the calendar, and Deportivo needs at least seventeen more points in order to end the season in a European position. This means that Lotina’s team needs to clinch at least the 38% of the points in dispute.

The final part of la liga season 2009/10 is here and all the teams are starting to make their calculations in order to clinch their goals. In the case of Deportivo the goal seems to be clear: the European competitions. The permanence has always been targeted in 42 points, and since Depor already has 38 with fifteen matches remaining in the calendar, the continuity at Primera División should be taken as granted. Therefore the team starts to look to higher goals.

For the moment the fight for the European positions seems to be a thing for ten clubs: Barcelona FC, Real Madrid FC, Valencia FC, Sevilla FC, Deportivo La Coruña, RCD Mallorca, Athletic Bilbao, Getafe FC, Osasuna and Villarreal FC. Of this list Barcelona and Real Madrid will fight for the title, Valencia seems to be the only club in the list with its goal already achieved: A Champions League spot. While Sevilla, Depor and Mallorca are targeting the last ticket to the most important tournament in Europe, the other four clubs are trying to reach the Europa league zone.

Within the last ten years at least 55 points were necessary in order to end sixth at the standings, that’s the mark achieved by Sevilla on the season 2003/04, which was useful to qualify to the UEFA Cup. So this is the mark that should be considered as primary target, at least at the beginning, because on the past season Depor added 58 and just ended 7th, four points behind Valencia, side that ended 6th and that qualified to the UEFA Europa League.

Meanwhile, Celta added 61 points on the season 2002/03, which was useful to end fourth and qualify to the UEFA Champions League; that was the lowest number of points added by the fourth place in la liga within the last decade. As a way of comparison, Atletico added 67 on the past season and qualified to the Champions League as the fourth place in Spain, while Villarreal ended fifth at the standings with 65 points.

This means that Deportivo needs at least seventeen more points (38% of the total) in order to end the season in the Europa League zone, and twenty-three (51% of the total) in order to aspire to the Champions League. Of course the number could be bigger according to the performance of the direct rivals.

What seems clear is that the European aspirations of Depor are passing through the Riazor, because five of the seven games that will be played at home in this last part of the season are against rivals trying to survive: Tenerife, Real Valladolid, Racing Santander, UD Almeria and Real Zaragoza. While Depor still has to visit three of the four clubs that are currently occupying a better position at the standings: Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla.

And the first exam is this Sunday at El Madrigal; Villarreal is currently nine points behind Deportivo and a defeat against the Galicians will practically eliminate them from the race. Also to emphasise the direct confrontation between Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao at the Sánchez Pizjuán.
