REVIEW: OSASUNA 3 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

06 May 2010
New defeat for a Deportivo that continues to be lost in the second round of la liga; the defensive mismatches cost the game as Depor allowed three goals in 31 minutes. At least Riki broke the scoreless period of the team.

BEFORE THE GAME
Both coaches sent the predicted starting squads; at Depor the main novelties were the presences of Fabril’s David Rochela at midfield and David Añon performing at the right wing. The lineup was composed of Dani Aranzubia at the goal, Manuel Pablo covering the right-back position, Laure was playing at the left and the central positions at defence were for Lopo and Colotto.

Juca and Rochela were the two pivotes; Juan Rodriguez performed at the right wing, David Añon attacked by the left flank, Juan Carlos Valerón was the playmaker and Riki the central attacker.

Osasuna needed the victory in order to certify its continuity at Primera División, for this coach Camacho was trusting in the combination between ex-Depor striker Walter Pandiani, attacker Carlos Aranda, ex-Recreativo Javier Camuñas and ex-Real Madrid Juan Francisco Torres ‘Juanfran’.

FIRST HALF
The downward spiral of Deportivo continued at Pamplona; this time Depor’s team had more presence in attack though it continued basing its game in long throws searching for Riki, but what killed the aspirations of the Galicians were the errors in defence. And it’s that the Navarrans had a 100% of effectiveness in the first part as they scored three goals in the three shots on target made in the half.

Things were moved since the beginning; just twenty seconds after the start Aranda found the ball after surpassing Lopo, but he didn’t have the time to beat Aranzubia. The locals knew that a victory was crucial and pushed a Deportivo that had big problems to control the ball, but that had in Valerón and Riki a good couple in attack.

Both players combined for the first time at minute 6, El Flaco assisted the ex-Getafe man, but the final attempt just went close to the right post. And then the first goal of Osasuna arrived, it was a play of Aranda on the right wing in which Laure failed to block the cross attempt, then the striker sent a high cross to the far post that Pandiani headed first and that later Javier Camuñas found at the far post to drill the ball between Aranzubia and Colotto. It was a good play of the locals, but also an error of a defensive line that was considered solid in the past.

The goal gave some confidence to Osasuna as they were caressing the salvation, but just five minutes later Depor equalised the things, and it was thanks to a new combination between Valerón and Riki; the Canarian made a perfect pass into the area that the Madrilenian seized with a drilled shot that crossed Ricardo. The goal put an end to a scoreless period of 634 minutes for Deportivo. The second longest in the history of the club.

Then Depor started to live its best moment in the game as it found the ball possession, but Osasuna reacted quickly and scored the second goal after an error of Aranzubia, it was after a cross of Azpilicueta that Pandiani headed on target at the penalty spot, Lopo couldn’t  reach the ball first and the Basque keeper had enough space to jump and deflect the ball, but still went to the back of the net.

It continued to be an intense game, with both teams having clear opportunities; at minute 29 Depor was close to equalise, this after Juca took a free-kick that Riki headed over the crossbar. Then Puñal drilled a pass to Aranda and this time Aranzubia made the save (31’).

But just one minute later the locals scored the third goal, again Aranda was involved in the play as he assisted Juanfran, who just had to cross Aranzubia with a drilling shot that went to the left post. It was a new error of the defensive line, because Aranda made the pass at the age of the area despite been surrounded by three rivals. The entertaining first half ended with a cross of Añon that Valerón headed out (40’)

SECOND HALF
The start of the second part was also exciting; first Pandiani assisted Juanfran with the head, but the ex-Real Madrid missed the target (49’). The response of Depor was a new combination between Valerón and Riki, the third in the game, but this time the Madrilenian missed the ball (51’). And just two minutes later Pandiani attempted from long-distance, but his effort just passed near to the post.

Then the game reached a pause that lasted thirteen minutes, time that Lotina used to refresh the squad with the entries of Sergio and Lassad for Valerón and Juca. The moves left the 4-2-3-1 scheme, but now Sergio was alongside Rochela at the centre of the field, while Lassad was playing behind Riki in attack. The true is that the Tunisian never appeared in the game as Valerón did, therefore Riki was practically alone for the final twenty-five minutes.

After these modifications Camuñas had a double chance, first as he found a rebound but the ball was deflected by a defender (65’), then he was assisted by Aranda, and this time his close-range shot was saved by Aranzubia (67’). Immediately the Basque keeper launched a quick counterattack, and the play ended with Juan Rodriguez shooting on target, and Ricardo made the save.

The best chance for Depor in the half came at minute 70; if was during a corner-kick of Sergio in which Ricardo missed to catch the ball, then Lopo headed it, but it went over the crossbar. Then Añon was replaced by Iván Pérez, it was a discrete game for the player from Fabril, because he only appeared at the end of the first part during the cross that was wasted by Valerón.

Nothing special occurred within the final fifteen minutes. Osasuna was content with the score and Depor was resigned to spend another matchday without adding the three points, the only approximation in this stage of the game was a shot of Riki that was saved by Ricardo (81’)

AFTER THE GAME
The curse on the second round continued as Depor failed at Pamplona, the errors in defence cost the three goals that were scored in a matter of thirty-one minutes, but at least Depor avoided to break its negative mark of consecutive minutes without goals as Riki scored early in the first part. The performance of the team was once again gray, especially in attack, this despite that the combinations between Valerón and Riki, plus some stationary plays, gave troubles to the Navarrans.

Now Depor is tenth in the table as Atletico Madrid defeated Real Valladolid at the Calderón stadium (3-1), on Saturday the squad will host RCD Mallorca (21h00 CET). It’s the penultimate game on the season and the last match to be played at the Riazor.
