18 May 2010
The season 2009/10 has just ended and it seems that Deportivo already has the targets for the coming campaign. Until the moment four names have been mentioned, two of them may already have an agreement with the club.

Coach Miguel Angel Lotina said a few weeks ago that he’s asking for five reinforcements ahead of the season 2010/2011, while president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro mentioned to reporters that the number of signings may be smaller, but the fact is that Deportivo is already searching in the transfer market. The goal is to get a young, Spanish and cheap promise that could increase its value in the future and that can also fill the gaps detected by the Basque coach.

The sources have been claiming that the negotiations started since some months ago and that a couple of these operations may be already closed. A few names have been mentioned, and Radio Galega informed on the past week that the Galician club is focusing its efforts in four targets: Saul, Michel, Walter Fernandez and Serbian Lekic.

The four of them are offensive players and according to Radio Galega the cases that are more close to be fulfilled are the ones of Saul and Walter Fernandez. The following is a short description of these four players:

Saul Fernandez (25, Elche CF):  He’s a right winger that briefly played at Primera División with Malaga and Levante, but it has been at Elche where the Asturian has found the needed regularly. On the present Segunda season he has played 31 matches (2,144 minutes) scoring three goals. Totally the ex-Sporting winger has played 52 games since his arrival to Elche and has scored nine goals.

The idea of Lotina is to alternate him with Pablo Alvarez in a position that has been weakened after the departure of Angel Lafita. He’s ending contract in June and according to the sources he already has a deal with Depor that could be officially announced on June 20. Currently he’s injured due to a toe fracture sustained during the past week, but should be fit to train for the pre-season.

Miguel Alfonso Herrero ‘Michel’ (21, Valencia FC): An old wish of Lotina that Lendoiro has been chasing since the year 2008, but he never reached an agreement with Valencia though the player has barely counted for coach Unai Emery. He just played 29 minutes on the liga season and has saw how Valencia B got relegated to Tercera, therefore his exit during the summer is very probable, at least in a loan deal.

Described as a talented playmaker, Lotina wants him to fill a position that currently is only covered by Valerón after the departures of Lafita and Verdú. Radio Galega claims that Lendoiro is close to reach an agreement with Valencia, though it isn’t known if the deal would be a final transfer or a loan.

Walter Fernandez Balufo (20, Gimnastic): A very young left winger that is just completing his first serious season in a first team; on the current Segunda campaign he has performed during thirty matches (1,718 minutes) without scoring any goal. His performance has been so good that he has been referred as the “revelation” of the season due to his skills at the left flank.

The Catalan arrived to Nastic on the past season after playing at the youth  teams of Espanyol and Barcelona, and impressed the scouts so much that after just six months Malaga FC was already negotiating his arrival to Primera División, but the loan operation failed due to the financial problems of the Andalusian team. For Depor it will be a complicate negotiation as he still under contract with Nastic, which means to pay a transfer. On the past week Lotina admitted that his name is one of the alternatives over the desk, though Nastic has denied any open negotiation with Deportivo.

Dejan Lekić (24, Red Star): The only foreign player in this short list, the Serbian is a tall attacker (height 1.91m) that has scored 82 goals in 173 matches in his career at FK Popovići, Metalac Kraljevo, FK Zemun and more recently at Red Star Belgrade. He recently was named in the pre-list that will dispute the World Cup in South Africa.

The idea of Lotina is to keep three of the current five strikers that he has (Riki, Adrian and Lassad) and complement their skills with the aerial game of Lekic. It should be the most complicate operation, because several clubs are already chasing him, actually in March it was reported that Racing Santander was close to reach a six million Euros agreement with Red Star, but it seems that the deal has collapsed.
