Another surprising signing at Deportivo as on Thursday left-back defender Stopira was hired for the next four seasons. It isn’t clear yet if the club is paying something for him, but what seems obvious is that he’s filling the spot of Angulo.

It was announced on Friday by Depor Sport and later confirmed by, Deportivo has completed the fifth signing for the season 2010/11 : Ianique Santos Tavares ‘Stopira’, a 22-years-old left-back defender that was born in Cape Verde. He played the last two seasons for Santa Clara at Liga de Honra (Portuguese second division).

Stopira was signed by the Portuguese club for the season 2008/09, but just performed in six league matches in the first season, including five near the end of the campaign. In the next season, he became a regular of the team, making twenty-six league appearances, all as starter (2,307 minutes).

He also has some international experience; first he was part of the U-21 squad of his country and later received a call-up to national team in May 2008 for a friendly against Luxembourg and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, plus a friendly game against Portugal (0-0).

At the end of June, Portuguese first division club Vitoria SC was trying to sign Stopira ahead of the new season, but Santa Clara was asking for the buyout option of the player (€250,000) , which was considered too high.

Later it was known that the rights over the defender were bought by a company named IberSports (75% of the rights) and apparently they paid €100,000, and just like it happened with Brayan Angulo Deportivo had to negotiate with a corporation in order to hire a player, the club hasn’t confirmed yet the amount of the operation, just that Stopira is signing a four-year contract and that the initial idea is to alternate him between Depor B and the first team.

Precisely, the player was hired in order to cover the spot left by Angulo, Colombian player that was the substitute of Filipe Luis for the past season. In recent weeks the club has negotiated the sell operation of the Brazilian; Lendoiro said on Thursday that he is negotiating with other clubs apart from Atletico Madrid, and in previous days the same president said that Depor will sign another left-back defender if the ex-Real Madrid leaves.
