RCDLC.com wants to congratulate Spain for conquering its first FIFA World Cup. There wasn’t any Depor’s player at the Spanish squad, but at least there were two familiar faces: Capdevila and Arbeloa. Felicidades Campeones!

Spain made history on Sunday after defeating The Netherlands in a dramatic final that was defined until the extra-time (1-0). The goal was scored by Barcelona’s Andrés Iniesta and it fired up the celebrations throughout Spain. Curiously it was the first goal in extra-time in a World Cup final since 1978. In this way Spain became into the eighth country that conquers the biggest trophy in football.

Also to mention that Spain became into the first team that clinches the gold after losing the first game of the competition (0-1 Vs Switzerland); to add that the Spaniards only allowed two goals in the Cup, the other was leaked in the group stage encounter against Chile (2-1), so it can be said that the main strength of the Spaniards was their solid defense.

And to mention that two ex-Depor players were part of that solid defensive line: Villarreal’s Joan Capdevila and Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa. The first player spend seven years at Depor (2000-2007)  completing 179 liga appearances wearing Depor’s shirt, while the second just played briefly at Deportivo for the 2006/07 campaign before been transferred to Liverpool FC, the Madrilenian played 20 liga games with the Galician squad.

Capdevila was the player with more activity during the World Cup, actually he was one of the three Spanish players that disputed all the possible minutes in the competition (the other two were Pique and Casillas), his stat includes the 30 minutes of the extra-time against the Netherlands (660). He was the starting alternative at the left side of the defense and had a solid performance, even having a chance to score in the final.

A funny story with the Catalan player is that he was interviewed by Spanish journalist Sara Carbonero after winning the game, and he was wearing a “bear box hat” and a having a beer bottle in one hand, video that can be watched at Youtube. It was also informed that his home town, Tàrrega, will tribute the player with a parade.

Meanwhile, the participation of Arbeloa was more discrete, because the starting choices at the centre of the defense were Puyol and Pique, at least he had the chance to play for thirteen minutes as he replaced Sergio Ramos during the 2-0 win over Honduras (group stage). RCDLC.com wants to congratulate both players and also all Spain supporters. Enhorbuena campeones!
