Squad news

In a crazy game Depor ended drawing 3-3 after been leading the scoresheet by 3-0; Deportivo had countless opportunities in the first part, but the changes and the will of the German team allowed the final draw.

Coach Miguel Angel Lotina has said that he’s planning to change the strategy in defense as now the players will mark by zones, and it seems that Depor’s squad still trying to be adapted to this new philosophy after allowing three goals in a matter of twenty-two minutes against a German club that ended tenth in the past Segunda season.

For the match the Basque coach chose to play with almost the same squad that was defeated by Young Boys; Manu was the starting keeper, Manuel Pablo played at the right-back position, Lopo and Colotto were the central defenders, Stopira performed on the left; Juan Rodriguez and Antonio Tomás were the two pivotes; Saúl was the right winger, Urreta was moved to the left, Michel acted as the playmaker and Riki played at the centre of the attack.

The game started with a minute of silence in the memory of the victims of the “Love Parade” tragedy. The first half was totally dominated by Deportivo; the Galicians had clear opportunities to score the first goal within the first half hour, the main ones on the boots of Riki (21’) and Michel (27’), but keeper Jan Glinker made the saves.

It was until the end of the first part that Deportivo was able to take the lead, first Michel scored his first goal wearing Depor’s shirt as he collected a rebound after his own previous shot. Three minutes later Riki scored a wonderful goal through a 25-meters free-kick masterpiece. The first half ended with a deserved lead for the Galicians.

For the second part Lotina decided to make six changes, including the whole defensive line. Rochela, Laure, Aythami, Raúl, Desmarets and Valerón were the ones that entered, later Lassad replaced Riki. Just minutes after the kick-off Desmarets scored his first goal as a Depor’s player as he sent a 32.meters shot that entered into the net by the left post.

At that point the match seemed secured for the Galicians, but the Germans started to put more pressure in attack and the substitutes at the defensive line of Depor begun to have problems with the marks. At minute 68, midfielder Björn Brunnemann seized one of these distractions and scored the first goal for Union with a shot from the edge of area.

Five minutes before the end, midfielder Torsten Mattuschka continued with the “festival” of long-range goals with a 25-meters free-kick that left Manu powerless. And with the game already in the stoppage time, the Germans scored the deserved equalizer with Dutch striker Santi Kolk curling a shot into the top-corner of the goal.

Third friendly game on the pre-season and Depor still without winning; the truth is that the team gave a positive impression during the first half, but the fact of allowing three goals in a matter of twenty-two minutes is a clear demonstration that Lotina has a lot of work to do as his players haven’t understood yet his new ideas at defense. Now the team returns to La Coruña and on next Saturday it will pay a visit to Cardiff City FC.
