First defeat on the season for a Deportivo that was pretty disappointing in attack and that preferred to spend the time controlling the actions from Villarreal, but a great effort of Nilmar erased the possibility of achieving a positive result.

Lotina surprised with the lineup as he sent a 4-3-3 lineup to the pitch, it was a triple pivote figure with two supports on the wings and a solo striker in attack. Another surprising things was that Andres Guardado started sited on the bench; the Mexican was coming after scoring twice against Getafe.

Manu was for the fourth straight time the keeper of Deportivo; Laure was debuting on this season covering the right-back position, Morel was on the left and the central positions in defence were for Lopo and Colotto. The triple pivote was composed by Juca-who was also debuting on the season-, Juan Rodriguez and Ruben Perez. Saúl was at the right wing and Yves Desmarets on the left. Finally, Adrian was the central attacker.

At Villarreal, coach Garrido was presenting the expected 4-4-2 formation, with ex-Depor Joan Capdevila at the left side of the defence and with the always dangerous combination Rossi-Nilmar leading the attacks.

Clearly it was a defensive approach by Lotina: Deportivo was closing all the gaps at midfield territory and defence, but the outcome was an inexistent presence in attack as Adrian was too alone to create scoring opportunities against Galician keeper Diego López. Therefore the planning of Lotina was to hold on the initial 0-0 and to wait for an isolated play in order to score.

It seemed as a fatalist approach, but the truth is that it was close to succeed, because the trio of pivotes was destroying the major part of the attacking moves from the locals, and the visitors faced a great chance to take the lead. That big opportunity came at minute 13, it was a play started by Juca, who assisted Saul and later the winger released a drilling cross that was close to be found by Desmarets at the box, but Angel was there to clear the danger.

The first approximation of Villarreal came two minutes later; it was an attempt of Rossi that passed close to the far post of Manu In the next thirteen minutes the Yellow Submarine was unable to unlock the defensive wall of Deportivo, while Lotina’s side was feeling comfortable speculating with the possibility of the counterattack, but it never found the way to reach Diego López, reason why this stage of the match was boring.

And then it came the key play on the game, Angel eluded Desmarets on the right, then he assisted Nilmar at the edge of the area and the Brazilian managed to enter into the area and release a shot that went to the far post and then to the back of the net after hitting the wood. It is his fourth goal in liga, meaning that he is now the Pichichi at Primera División.

There was no reaction at Deportivo, and actually Villarreal was closer to increase the lead as Nilmar was heading a cross of Senna (38’), while three minutes later the shot of Senna was stopped by Manu.

In resume it was a poor first half by Deportivo in attack, though the team was ordered at the back zone; the Galicians never made a shot on target though they were pressing the rival. For this last reason Villarreal had big problems to create scoring opportunities, but Nilmar was there to solve the issue and give the advantage to his team.

There was no reaction in the second part as Deportivo continued to have problems in attack, Villarreal was more loose on the pitch and could have scored more goals, but they failed or Manu appeared to make the saves. And it’s that Villarreal was the stronger side since the beginning of the second half. Just two minutes after the kick-off Capdevila was close to score as the Catalan released a strong shot that was cleared by Manu. In the next play Cazorla eluded three rivals to end releasing a drilling and crossed shot that went close to the left post.

This half of the game was more entertaining, mainly because Deportivo was trying to push forward, while Villarreal was finding more open spaces and also because Cazorla was more involved in the game. And from his boots came the next scoring opportunity for the Yellow Submarine as one of his passes was found by Nilmar, but the shot of the Brazilian missed the target (53’)

Then Lotina decided to switch the scheme to a 4-2-3-1 as Lassad entered for Juca, now the Tunisian was acting as a playmaker, but the move never brought fresh air to the attack of Deportivo, as a simple explanation of this situation the fact that the Galicians were still missing to complete a shot on target. And twelve minutes before the final whistle Lotina decided to replace Adrian with Dioni, the Fabril’s striker was debuting at Primera División and became into the first Depor B member to have minutes on this season during an official match.

As Deportivo was still disconnected in offense, Lotina decided to replace Desmarets with Guardado, but Villarreal was still prevailing, with the trio composed by Nilmar, Rossi and Cazorla giving a lot of problems to Depor’s defensive sector, while Senna was controlling midfield territory.

At the 80th minute, a combination between Nilmar and Rossi was close to bring the second goal for the locals, but the Italian missed the target. Despite that Lotina moved the bench searching for solutions in attack, the truth is that his team never showed the same spirit sawn in the second part against Getafe; Lassad barely touched the ball, while the first appearance of Dioni was an assist of Saul that the striker couldn’t seize as a defender cleared the danger first (84’).

Only Guardado seemed active in the few minutes that he spent on the pitch, but the truth is that Villarreal was closer to achieve the second than Depor to conquer the equalizer. Cani, who replaced Rossi, had two attempts to score from mid-distance, but Manu made the saves. And the last opportunity was for Cazorla, but his crossed shot went out.

First defeat on the season for Deportivo and the truth is that it was well deserved, because the Galicians did nothing in attack and seemed content with the fact of not suffering a bigger defeat. Lotina chose to play with a very passive lineup, later it tried to shake the things up with the entries of Lassad, Dioni and Guardado, but the picture never changed.

Now Deportivo is 17th on the table, just separated from relegation by the goal difference and as one of the three teams that haven’t won yet on this start of season. And on Sunday the Galician team will host UD Almeria, one of the other two teams that still searching for their first triumph in la liga (Riazor, 17h00 CET)
