DEPORTIVO IN NOVEMBER

03 Nov 2010
Important month ahead of Depor, because three of the four matches in November mean a confrontation against direct rivals for the permanence, while Lotina’s team will also try advance in Copa Del Rey.

The refreshing victory over RCD Espanyol is helping to see things from another perspective after the poor start in la liga competition. And November will be a crucial month as three of the four teams to be faced are direct rivals that currently are three or even less points above Depor, therefore a series of positive results will definitely pull Deportivo outside of the relegation zone.

All starts this Sunday as Deportivo visits the Ciutat de Valencia in order to face Levante UD; the Valencians are just one point over the Galicians and a victory will mean a boost for Lotina’s side. On the current liga season Levante has only won once at home after four liga presentations at their stadium: 2-1 Vs. Real Sociedad (matchday 07). It will be the first meeting of Sergio against his former club after leaving during the past summer.

Then, in midweek, Depor will try to qualify to the last-16 round in Copa del Rey; the rival is Club Atlético Osasuna. The 1-1 of the first-leg is giving a narrow advantage to Depor as a 0-0 at the Riazor –same score achieved in liga a couple of weeks ago- will mean to pass the round. If Lotina’s team advances to the next round it will have to shorten its Christmas vacations as the first-leg will be played on December 22 and the returning leg on January 5.

RCD Mallorca is the following rival in la liga as Depor visits the Ono Stadi; it is the exception in the month as the Majorcans are currently occupying the seventh position in la liga. Several journalists were expecting to see the team at the bottom, but the results have been great so far, including a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou and a surprising 2-1 win in Mestalla. Besides, to emphasize that Depor has only clinched one win within the last eleven visits to the One Stadi; therefore it is clear that this will be the toughest game on the month.

Later, Deportivo returns to the Riazor in order to face Malaga CF; club that’s living a transition period after been bought by a member of the Qatari ruling family. And the results have been terrible has the Andalusian team has lost its five home matches on the season,  at least they have clinched two wins of their four away matches: 5-3 at Zaragoza (matchday 02) and 2-0 at Getafe (matchday 04). Currently Malaga has the same seven points than Deportivo. On Tuesday it was known that Jesualdo Ferreira was fired –Malaga has to pay eight million Euros to him after only lasting four months- for the moment the name of Manuel Pellegrini has been mentioned as the possible substitute.

The month ends with the visit to El Sardinero in order to face Racing Santander; coach Miguel Ángel Portugal was at the same point than Lotina on the past weekend, because his team was living a poor moment after been trashed by Real Madrid in liga and later humiliated by Segunda club Cordoba in Copa, but the 4-1 win over Osasuna brought fresh air to their coach. Still, Racing is just three points above relegation and it can’t relax. To remember that El Sardinero is the favourite visit of Depor as the Galicians haven’t lost there since the season 1995/96 (1-2).
