Depor added three important points in a strange game in which Lotina suffered four injury cases plus the suspension of Colotto and Rubén for the visit to Espanyol. The game was fluid but there weren’t too many scoring opportunities.

Lotina surprised as he made three changes during the training session that took place on Monday’s morning; it was said that the spot in attack was going to be for Sand or Riki, but in the end it was for Lassad Nouioui. Meanwhile, Juan Rodriguez delayed his position and joined Antonio Tomás at midfield, therefore Michel was the playmaker leaving Ruben Pérez on the bench.

But the biggest surprise was at the centre of the defense: the entry of David Rochela to the starting team as Aythami Artiles was a last-minute casualty due to gastroenteritis. The spot of the Canarian defender in the list of eighteen players was claimed by Brazilian midfielder Juca. The curious thing is that the club tried to contact Ze Castro, who was not considered in the initial list, but the Portuguese never responded and in the end the opportunity was for Fabril’s defender.

In the end Lotina presented a 4-2-3-1 scheme; Daniel Aranzubia was the goalie; Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ was at the right-back spot, Claudio Morel was on the left, while the central positions were for Colotto and Rochela . Antonio Tomás and Juan Rodriguez were the pivotes; Adrian and Andrés Guardado performed on the wings; Michel was the playmaker and Lassad was the central attacker.

At Real Sociedad, coach Lasarte was trusting in Imanol Agirretxe, Xabi Prieto, Antoine Griezmann and David Zurutuza for the attacking positions, while Mikel Gónzalez was playing in the place of De La Bella at the left-back position.

Weird first part in which Deportivo dominated the actions; weird because the game  was fluid but it missed emotion. And it’s that both teams were easily passing midfield mark, but in the end there was only one shot on target on this half. Lotina’s team was pretty active in attack, with Guardado, Adrian, Riki and Morel participating of the offensive moves.

Deportivo completely dominated the actions on this half against a soft rival that missed its main strikers up front, and the first attempt to score came at minute 5 as Adrián drilled a pass that Guardado couldn’t seize against visiting keeper Claudio Bravo, later Lassad tried to reach the rebound, but a defender cleared the danger.

Then, the bad luck with the injuries continued as Lassad suffered a knock on the foot during a play against Dimidov-later it was informed that he sustained an ankle sprain- and Riki entered to the pitch in order to replace the Tunisian attacker. The true is that the entry of the Madrilenian benefited Depor as the ex-Getafe man was appearing in all the offensive actions of his team.

His first appearance came at minute 14 as he collected the ball inside the area to end releasing a crossed shot that passed close to the far post. Still, both teams were missing more depth to create scoring opportunities; Deportivo and Real Sociedad were moving the ball at ease, but they always failed at the moment of releasing the last pass.

At minute 23, a combination between Morel and Riki allowed Guardado to attempt from the edge of the area, but the Mexican couldn’t connect the ball properly and the shot was easily stopped by Bravo. At minute 30. Guardado drilled a perfect pass for Riki, but the crossed shot of the Madrilenian attacker just passed close to the far post. That was the first attempt to score in the game.

And ten minutes had to pass in order to witness a new scoring opportunity and it meant to be Depor’s first goal. Guardado threw a free-kick at midfield, he sent the ball into the left side of the box, just where Colotto jumped to head the ball into the box, place where Riki threw himself to the ground to connect the ball backwards the goal crossing Bravo. It was the first shot on target on the game and it’s also the third goal in liga for the Madrilenian. There were no more opportunities on this half.

The weirdness continued for the second part, because Depor suffered two new injury cases, but it never affected the team as the Galicians achieved a comfortable 2-0 score. It was until the visitors scored their goal than the fans at the Riazor feared to live eave something similar to what happened against Sevilla FC.

The true is that Real Sociedad started the second part trying to push in attack, but Depor was still finding a lot of room at midfield, reason by Depor’s fast attacks were creating a lot of troubles to the visitors. At minute 49, Aranzubia intercepted a drilling pass searching for Agirretxe.

Later, the same Agirretxe (50’) and Illarramendi (52’) were attempting from mid-distance, but they missed the target. Then a new injury case affected Depor’s squad; Riki, who replaced Lassad in the first part, had to leave and his place was taken by Yves Desmarets. It was informed that the Madrilenian suffered an adductor injury and new scans will be made on Tuesday.

With this new modification, Guardado was playing on the left wing, Desmarets stayed on the right side, Michel was the playmaker and Adrian was moved to the centre of the attack. Riki was pretty active in attack, but his team mates never felt his exit as immediately Depor scored the second goal.

It was a long ball that Desmarets collected twenty meters from the area, then the French men made a short pass to Michel, who then drilled a perfect pass to the left side of the area, just into the path of Adrian, who just had to drill the ball between the legs of Bravo to score the second goal for Deportivo. It is the fifth goal in liga for the Asturian.

It seemed that Depor was now facing a comfortable situation and was even close to score a third goal as Desmarets faced a one-on-one situation against Bravo, but the French winger couldn’t end the play (63’). Before that action, Antonio Tomas got injured and Lotina had to make his third change in the game due to injury reasons. Ruben Perez entered for the Cantabrian. The former Racing man suffered a knock on the thigh.

And then, just when everything seemed resolved, Real Sociedad scored its goal. It was a cross of Xabi Prieto that Agirretxe headed inside the box, the Basque striker was surrounded by Colotto, Morel and Laure, but somehow he was able to release a downwards header that went to the far post of Aranzubia. That goal broke Depor’s mark of 288 without allowing a goal in liga, the best one lived on this season.

The goal changed the game as now Real Sociedad had the initiative, while Depor was relying on the counterattack. One of the keys was the entry of Jeffrey Sarpong, who started to give a lot of problems to Morel on the left, in one of those actions the Ghanaian  fired a rocket that was saved by Aranzubia (67’).

However, that was the last dangerous play of Real Sociedad in the game; in the rest of the time they insisted through long throws and countless crosses, but Depor’s defenders, lead by a great Colotto and an accurate Rochela, contained all the danger.

Even Depor had a couple of opportunities to score the third goal. At the 82nd minute, Laure assisted Rubén Pérez and the Andalusian made a shot from the edge of the area, but his drilling attempt missed the target. Two minutes later Adrian made a long run on the left side of the pitch, he entered the area, but his cross was cleared to corner-kick.

Important victory for a Deportivo that now accumulates five games without been defeated and that has now a gap of five points over the relegation zone. But it was also an expensive win as Lotina lost three main due to injury reasons –Lassad, Riki and Antonio Tomas- without forgetting Aythami, who couldn’t start the game, plus Colotto and Ruben Perez, duo that is now suspended as both collected a fifth yellow card in liga.

The game was fluid, but it lacked more depth as both teams combined only completed six shots on target. In the end the Galicians seized two of their six attempts in the game and are collecting the three points. On next Sunday the Galician team visits RCD Espanyol (17h00 CET).
