Rumours about a possible departure of Lionel Scaloni have started to appear lately, following the absence of the Argentinean in Caparros' system. The captain of Deportivo has reiterated time and again his loyalty to the club, but his patience might run out and an exit during the winter market is nearer then ever. Monaco is the latest name to be associated with him.

Although Scaloni was voted as captain by the players of Deportivo, and Caparros has stated repeatedly that he will find a place for him, the truth is that after seven matchdays, the Argentinean has only played 142 minutes for Deportivo. He was a starter only once, in the first Liga match of the season, and entered as a substitute three more times in the dying minutes.

Usually a right wing player, Scaloni hasn't been used by Caparros even though Victor is injured for some time now, while Manuel Pablo and Hector seem to be the preferred choices for the wing back position on the right side. In the midfield it is also difficult for the Argentinean to find a place, since Duscher and Sergio are undisputable starters.

This situation doesn't suit Scaloni at all, he was once a certain participant in Argentina's qualification campaign, but has recently been left out by Jorge Pekerman. His only chance of returning to the squad that will go to the World Cup in Germany is to play for his club, a fact that Scaloni is very aware of.

The situation of the Argentinean is well known after the press covered this aspect in the last few weeks, and Monaco have publicly stated that they are interested in him. Monaco have a new technician after the departure of Didier Deschamps, in the person of Francesco Guidolin. It seems that he has requested several enforcements to tackle the second half of the season, and Scaloni has made the top of his list. There is already an Argentinean playing for Monaco, Bernardi, and he has supplied the club with more information about his conational.

Scaloni's contract ends in 2007 and a renewal is out of the question as long as he doesn't have a place in the starting lineup. Under the circumstances, Monaco have already started to negociate with the player, to find out what his conditions are. Lendoiro has also started the talks covering the economical aspects of the deal, and the discussed transfer sum is rumoured to be around four or five million euros, probably to be paid in cash.

For the player, it would definitely be a good opportunity, he would be able to star on the right wing, the position that suits him best. For Deportivo it would also be a welcome economic surge, although it is known that Lendoiro is very fond of the Argentinean and he will have the last word.

Deportivo's winger is an undeniable starter and has had a constant performance this season, slowly becoming the reference in Deportivo's attack. His speed and technique, as well as his determination have brought him into the spotlight and now Luis Aragones is considering him for the two-leg playoff against Slovakia.

Jose Antonio Reyes has been the preferred choice of the Spanish coach, but after an injury is set to sideline the Arsenal player for a longer period, Getafe's Riki and Munitis are now his possible replacements.
