THE QUEST FOR THE STRIKER CONTINUES

19 Jun 2011
For many years Deportivo has been looking for a top-scorer that could guarantee goals and subsequently some points; it has been the constant problem within the last seasons and now the team needs its more than ever before.

A promotion to Primera División can only be achieved scoring a lot of goals and for this it is crucial to have a striker that could guarantee those goals. All the team that ended at the top positions at Segunda had one, starting with Barcelona B and Jonathan Soriano (32), and then by Betis and Ruben Castro (27), Valladolid and Javi Guerra (28), Granada FC and Alexandre Geijo (24), Rayo Vallecano and Emiliano Ballesteros and even Celta and David Rodriguez (17).

Lendoiro and Oltra are aware of this and for this reason the priority during the summer window is to sign a “top-scorer” for Deportivo. But it isn’t an easy task, because nobody wants to lose a scarce resource like a Pichichi and the players at the market are too expensive for a Depor with a limit budget to make big incorporations.

The club had five targets for the spot: Nino, Alexandre Geijo, José Verdú Nicolás, 'Toché', Jonathan Soriano and Xisco. Of this short list only Xisco isn’t discarded yet, though it will be a miracle of the Galician club reaches a new loan agreement with Newcastle United ahead of next season.

The club also had a three-name list with youngsters that were on target: Ángel Luis Rodríguez (24, Elche CF), Jose Luis Sanmartín Mato ´Joselu’ (21, Real Madrid Castilla) and Rodri Ríos Lozano (21, Sevilla Atlético).

Of this new list only Joselu has shown some interest, as he told recently to reporters, ”We can’t say that it isn’t a possibility. It’s something to thank to hear the names of these clubs linked with you, but we don’t know what will happen. I have a five-year contract with Castilla and my idea to continue and later we will see.” But the true is that Depor hasn’t made any approach for him.

Now, it seems that the club is silently working in other names, knowing that the limit resources are a decisive factor. For this reason, and according to several reporters, the club is close to complete some signings, including the one of a striker, but Lendoiro has ordered to keep the silence in order to avoid leaks that could block the operations. In this sense it has been rumoured that one or two signings were close to be completed, though there are no clues about the names of the players.
