REVIEW: CORDOBA 0 – DEPORTIVO 2 (LIGA)

23 Oct 2011
Solid game of a Deportivo that secured the three points thanks to two deadly counterattacks; the Galicians return to the promotion spots, but the best news is the impression left by a team that was starting to create some doubts.

BEFORE THE GAME
In the end Oltra just completed one modification compared to the starting eleven that faced Gimnástic Tarragona, the novelty was the presence of Riki replacing Lassad in attack. All the eyes were on Oltra as the Valencian coach was finally sited on the bench after the agreement between Deportivo and Vecindario.

It was the classical 4-2-3-1 figure, with Aranzubia at the goal, Laure played at the right-back position, Ayoze was at the left, while Aythami and Colotto were at the centre of the defense. Jesús Vázquez and Álex Bergantiños were the two pivotes, Guardado was attacking from the right wing, Salomão was on the left, Valerón was the playmaker in the formation and Riki was the central attacker.

At Córdoba, coach Paco Jemez was presenting two novelties, Javier Patiño was playing alongside Charles in attack, while left-back Cerrajeria was sat on the bench, his place was claimed by youngster José Manuel Fernandez.

FIRST HALF
Good first half for Deportivo as it was a more serious team in defense and that played with short passes and later with counterattacks, precisely this last one was the road to the goals. Córdoba never felt comfortable on the pitch and they barely disturbed Aranzubia.

Deportivo started strongly, pushing up front and the first shot on target came after just 30 seconds; Valerón assisted Riki and the Madrilenian fired from long-distance, and local keeper Alberto Garcia made the safe deflecting the attempt to corner-kick. Depor was imposing the pace of the game at this stage, while Córdoba was having big problems to reach the area of Aranzubia.

At minute 11, Riki was close to score after collecting a cross of Guardado coming from the right, but the pass was too strong and the Madrilenian couldn’t connect the ball properly, so he missed the target. Eight minute later Guardado threw a direct free-kick from the left corner and his attempt turned into a volley that was cleared by Alberto Garcia.

In the next play Riki assisted Ayoze and the left-back had an attempt to score that was saved by Cordoba’s keeper. The first approximation for the locals came until minute 25 after Jesús Vázquez committed a foul at the edge of the area, the resulting free-kick, threw by Javi Hervás, went over the crossbar.

With the pass of the minutes Córdoba leveled the ball possession, but it didn’t have the needed clear ideas to pass the defensive wall of the visitors, while Depor was now playing through counterattacks, though Oltra’s men missed the last pass, reason why the scoring opportunities were scarce.

And Depor scored the first goal as the Galicians finally found the connection to build up a perfect counterattack; Córdoba was attacking and Guardado recovered the ball at midfield, then the Mexican released a long pass that broke the offside trap leaving Diogo Salomão alone against the keeper, then the Portuguese patiently eluded Alberto Garcia to easily score the goal from close range. It’s his third goal in the Segunda season.

The goal shacked Córdoba and the locals were pressing up front; as result they had the clearest chance in the half for them: Quero found the ball at the left corner of the box to fire a low shot that was searching for the bottom right corner of Aranzubia, but the keeper made a great save (34’).

However, it was Deportivo the side closer to score; at minute 36 Riki was assisted by Salomão inside the box, but the shot of the Madrilenian was too easy for Alberto Garcia; three minutes later Salomão had an attempt to score from long range, and again the local keeper made the save.

SECOND HALF
The final forty-five minutes were more suffered for Deportivo, because Oltra’s team was more delayed on the pitch; this time Cordoba gave a sense of danger, but it never found the way to break the defense of the visitors. Depor had several chances to score the second, but it was until eleven minutes before the final whistle that the Galicians defined the game.

Again Depor was the side that had the first scoring opportunity early in the half, and again it was for Riki after a long and collective play in which the Madrilenian attempted a scissors-kick that missed the target (47’). But Córdoba jumped into the grass in order to press up front, reason why they were surrounding the area of Aranzubia, while the Galicians were betting on the counterattacks.

Riki had countless opportunities as Depor was unleashing its counterattacks; in one of those actions the Madrilenian was close to score after a new long pass coming from midfield, this time released by Álex Bergantiños, but the drilling shot of the Madrilenian was blocked by Alberto Garcia (51’).

Cordoba was looking livelier in this half as they were searching for the equalizer. At minute 53, a long play of the locals ended with Charles assisting Patiño, but his shot from close-range was cleared by Colotto to corner-kick. Tree minutes later Patiño was heading out a cross coming from the right.

Valerón wasn’t appearing to lead the attack; instead the weight of the game was on the shoulders of Guardado and Salomão at the wings, and Álex at the centre of the pitch. The defense was solid this time, but it’s also true it that Córdoba was a naïve rival that never knew what to do in attack, which explains why Los Blanquaiverdes haven’t scored too many goals on the season.

Then Oltra replaced an exhausted Salomão and Saul Fernández claimed the spot at the right wing, moving Guardado to the left flank. In his first play on the game Saul released a cross from the right that Riki couldn’t connect at the box, the action ended in corner-kick.

Riki missed a new great chance at minute 66, Valerón appeared to light the way with a fantastic drilling pass that left the ex-Getafe man alone against Alberto Garcia, but the attacker missed the goal with a strong shot that hit the net by the outside. Then El Flaco was replaced by Juan Dominguez.

Riki had a new chance to score at minute 76, this time the assistor was Guardado but the attempt of the Madrilenian was blocked, and five minutes later the ex-Getafe man finally found its first goal in liga. It must be said that the goal was a clear explanation of what happened throughout the match.

Cordoba penetrated by the right left side as Borja Garcia made a great play to end drilling the ball into the penalty spot, but Patiño slipped and was unable to shot on target, then Jesús Vázquez made a long clearance that turned into a great assist leaving Riki alone –again- against Alberto Garcia and this time he scored the goal drilling the ball between the keeper’s legs. In this way Depor defined the game showing its punch up front.

Just second later Riki was replaced by Lassad; the second goal killed the game tough the locals insisted up front, but it was still missing depth and ideas, actually Depor was closer to score the third goal, always through a counterattack, the clearest one came at minute 85 as Juan Dominguez assisted Saul, who fired from the centre of the goal, but his attempt was saved by Alberto Garcia, who without doubt was the best player at his team.

AFTER THE GAME
Deportivo improved its performance and secured a refreshing victory; again the Galicians suffered, but at least they spent the last ten minutes calmed after scoring the second goal. They also clinched the third clean sheet on the liga season and at the same time seized two of the countless opportunities enjoyed after a counterattack. The result leaves Deportivo living inside the promotion zone, just three points below the second place.

Now Oltra’s Deportivo travels to Murcia in order to face FC Cartagena (Cartagonova stadium, Thursday, 20h00 CET). For the meeting Ayoze Diaz is suspended after picking his fifth yellow card of the season.
