MATCHDAY 11: THE SITUATION AT THE STANDINGS

02 Nov 2011
Up to twelve teams are aspiring to the six promotion spots at Liga Adelante, while the fourth teams at the bottom struggle to leave the relegation zone.

The football style practiced by Hércules CF might not be inspiring, but its impressive results are breaking all the marks at Segunda División. After eleven matches the Valencians have only dropped five points for an impressive mark of twenty-eight points, that’s a record at this stage of the competition since the season 1997/98, year in which the tournament was switched into a tournament with twenty-two clubs.

Hércules has now an advantage of six points over the second place and nine over the third, but they must be careful, because within the last fourteen seasons at Segunda División, nine of the leaders after the first eleven matches were unable to clinch the goal of the promotion; a warning of the difficulty of this tricky league.

The other five promotion spots are highly disputed, there are eleven clubs only separated by five points and any streak of positive results can change the entire picture, like it happened to RC Celta, club that won the three matches disputed on the past week and that climbed seven positions in just seven days. Deportivo still leaving a lot of doubts with its performance, but it clinched six of the last nine points in dispute and still in the fight.

If there’s a record at the top, there’s also a record at the bottom of the standings, because Gimnástic de Tarragona is the worst last place at this stage of the competition since the Segunda tournament was switched into a league with twenty-two clubs (season 1997/98). The Catalans still searching for their first victory and have only added four draws.

Córdoba CF also had four points after eleven matches on the season 2004/05, but at least they had one victory and a better goal average, while within the last fourteen years the only clubs without wins at this stage of the season were CD Leganés (1999/2000) and Real Jaén (1997/98), though they had more points.

Despite clinching some positive results, like the win of Cartagena over Deportivo, none of the bottom five clubs were able to leave the positions that they were occupying before starting the rally of three matches in one week, though some of them switched some positions. Despite the poor record of Nastic, the true is that they still only five points from salvation.
