MATCHDAY 25: THE TAKEOFF OF THE TOP-FOUR

21 Feb 2012
Big weekend for the top four places as they achieved important victories; now a new race appears for the final two playoff spots. Things didn’t change at the bottom of the standings, though there were a couple of interesting results.

Since early on the season it was pretty clear that the fight for the six top-places, i.e. the promotion spots, was reduced to seven teams, and now the race for Primera División is splitting between two different marathons; the first is the fight between four teams for the two automatic promotion seats, and the other is a battle between five clubs for the two last seats at the playoffs.

And it’s that the first four places won their matches during the weekend, starting with Deportivo La Coruña, side that defeated Barcelona B (2-1) to chain its ninth straight win of the season, the biggest winning streak at Segunda and the third largest in Spain on this campaign. Oltra’s team has opened a 14-point gap with the seventh place and for now, at least, is securing the participation in the playoffs.

However Depor has been unable to open a gap with its most near chasers, and it’s that runners-up RC Celta has only dropped two of the last twenty-four points in dispute; on Sunday the club from Vigo clinched am important victory visiting direct rival Elche CF (0-2), though it was a polemic game too as Celta only took the lead after the rival was reduced to nine men, eventually Los Ilicitanos ended with eight men on the pitch and suffered a hard hit in their aspirations.

Neither third place Valladolid CF is getting out of gas; the violet club has added 12 of the last 15 points, and on Saturday they achieved a suffered win at home before penultimate place Girona CF. Fourth place UD Almeria is also on fire as it has won the last four matches in a row, actually the last defeat of the Andalusians was in November visiting Deportivo.

These four clubs seem destined to fight for the two automatic promotion spots as the difference between the first and the fourth place is only of six points. The results on the weekend opened a gap between this quartet and the next five clubs. Sixth place Hércules CF suffered a painful defeat visiting RC Recreativo (0-1) and is now at the edge of promotion.

Meanwhile, seventh place Córdoba CF suffered its biggest loss of the season at the frozen pitch of CD Numancia (0-5), club that joins the race for promotion together with AD Alcorcón, the Madrilenians are on fire as they clinched a second straight victory trashing Villarreal B on the road (0-3). Now the distance between fifth place Elche CF and ninth place CD Numancia is of six points, so the competition has now a new race that targets to clinch a seat for the promotion playoffs.

At the bottom of the standings, meanwhile, there are no major changes in the positions, but there were two interesting results that brought hope to hell. First FC Cartagena clinched a vital 1-0 win over CE Sabadell and now the Murcians are separated from safety just by the goal difference rule, this since Villarreal B fell at home before AD Alcorcón.

Then, SD Huesca achieved a 2-1 victory over CD Guadalajara and now lies just one point behind safety; things didn’t change for the other two teams in relegation as the defeat of Girona was joined by a new loss of Gimnástic de Tarragona, this time visiting UD Las Palmas (0-1). In any case the situation still thigh as neither CD Alcoyano is putting distance with the pit after suffering its third defeat within the last four matches, this time they lost at Xérez CD (0-1)

MATCHDAY 26: INTERESTING MATCHES AT BOTH CORNERS
Next weekend will be pretty interesting; first to all two of the most in-forms teams in the competition play against each other: second place RC Celta entertains fourth spot UD Almeria, a match that could be crucial in the quest for the second place. Leader Deportivo visits instable CE Sabadell, while Real Valladolid travels to tricky Real Murcia, side that was considered as an aspirant to the playoffs, but that has only added one of the last fifteen points in dispute.

Meanwhile Hércules CF and Elche CF will try to correct their recent form as the first visits Barcelona B, while the second hosts RC Recreativo. Córdoba FC will also try to rejoin the path of the victory as it hosts UD Las Palmas; CD Numancia and AD Alcorcón will expect for a new slip as they face relegation teams Girona CF and FC Cartagena.

There are three direct confrontations at the bottom of the table during the weekend; the first is the visit of 20th spot SD Huesca to 17th place CD Alcoyano, and the other is the visit of 15th spot Xérez CD to last place Gimnástic de Tarragona. Finally 18th place Villarreal B will try to keep avoiding the relegation zone as it visits 16th place CD Guadalajara.
