Deportivo announced that an agreement with RCD Espanyol for the transfer of Sergio is near to happening. The Catalan midfielder arrived in 2001 and now the most probable scenario is to see his return to Montjuic. The deal could reach €8 million and for the moment the only thing left is to negotiate the salary that Sergio will earn in Espanyol.

The interest of RCD Espanyol in Sergio isn't new. It was speculated during the last months that the Catalans would try to sign him back in order to build the team for the season 2006/2007. Yesterday it was reported that the vice-president of Espanyol, Pedro Tom??s, visited La Coru?a in order to solve the case with Albert Lopo. Apparently Tom??s also had the incorporation of Sergio in his briefcase, he presented an offer that Lendoiro accepted.

There isn't any official information about the cost of the operation, but the media in Spain speculates that it could be between the €4 and €8 million. The deal will also include the approval of Espanyol about the incorporation of Lopo to Depor. In any case, informed that both clubs have reached an agreement, and that the only thing left is to negotiate with the player. The same Sergio visited Montjuic in order to negotiate his incorporation, but he assured that the deal isn't near to happening: "This was a just a meeting in order to establish a first contact. I will love to return, but right now it's complicated."

It cost Deportivo a small fortune (about €18 million) to take Sergio away from Catalunya. The midfielder commented on his transfer that "I carry Espanyol in my heart. I will take the club with me but I am also drawn to the possibility of playing at such a big club as Deportivo." Now the Catalan has the possibility to return to the team that he carries in the heart, but first he must agree about the salary that he would earn.

Sergio has been a crucial player for Deportivo during the last years. In five seasons with the squad he has played 182 liga matches plus 41 appearances in European competitions. He has also scored crucial goals, like the one of the centenariazo against Real Madrid. In the season 2005/2006 Sergio played 48 matches including six Intertoto appearances and six copa games.

He has been a regular for coaches Irureta and Caparr??s, but the same Sevillan trainer admitted a few months ago that any player has the door open if an interesting offer arrives: "The important thing is to progress, I don't mind if a player leaves when the club has an important offer in the desk, but we must invest this in the incorporation of one or two new players."
