PREVIEW: CD GUADALAJARA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

10 Mar 2012
Depor targets to keep leading Liga Adelante as it visits a CD Guadalajara that wants to put more distance with relegation; Guardado returns and represents the only modification that Oltra will make at the Pedro Escartín stadium.

STATISTICS: TWO SEPARATE ROADS
At the beginning of the season it seemed that both Deportivo La Coruña and CD Guadalajara were going to fight for the same goals, but these two teams parted their ways since December as Guadalajara has lost eight of its last ten meetings in liga, while Depor was winning ten of its last eleven confrontations at Liga Adelante.

Depor is the leader of the league, with a comfortable nine-point advantage over the third place; the main characteristic of the Galicians is to be the third best scorer in the league with 45 goals in favour, just below RC Celta (49) and UD Almeria (46). Meanwhile CD Guadalajara is the second worst defense of the competition with 44 goals allowed, just one less than Villarreal B.

This is the first visit that Depor pays to the Pedro Escartín stadium, though Fabril already played there, actually it was the stadium where Depor B suffered, ten month ago, the relegation to Tercera División. The first team has barely faced clubs from Castile-La Mancha, within the last twenty years it only faced Albacete Balompié at Primera División, and in seven matches it clinched three victories, including a demolishing 8-2 in the last matchday of the season 1994/95.

DEPORTIVO: GUARDADO RETURNS
Mexican Andrés Guardado has been one of the leading forces in attack during this season; the left winger has scored eight goals and gave five assists, helping his team to reach the top of the standings and command the Segunda División. The best part is that the ghost of the injuries is no longer chasing him as on this season he has played in 23 of the 27 matchdays.

The ex-Atlas man only missed four games as he was concentrated with the national team of Mexico; the Galicians noticed his absence in the first two matches as they lost before Hércules CF (0-1) and CD Alcoyano (0-2), though in the next two Depor adapted to the circumstances and ended clinching the three points: RC Celta (2-1) and the latest game against AD Alcorcón (2-1).

Now, Guardado returns after a friendly with Colombia and claims back the spot at the left wing in the only modification that coach José Luis Oltra is planning for the visit to the Pedro Escartín. Since December the Valencian trainer has barely made changes and has result Deportivo clinched the three points in ten of the last eleven meetings.

So, Dani Aranzubia stays at the goal, Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ keeps performing at the right-back position, the left side is for Paraguayan Claudio Morel, while the central positions at defense are for Argentine Diego Colotto and Portuguese Ze Castro.

The only two Galician players at the starting team are the ones that command midfield: Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños. The right wing is for Bruno Gama, who has scored three goals within the last four matches; Guardado performs on the left, Juan Carlos Valerón is the playmaker in the formation and Riki is the central attacker, this last one is the Pichichi at the team with nine goals in favour.

For the game Oltra is traveling with three strikers, this since Lassad Nouioui was included in the list after missing the previous match due to international action. Xisco is the other alternative that will be sat on the bench. Right-back Manuel Pablo and striker Rodolfo Bodipo are the only players staying at the injury room, while Ayoze, Rochela, Jesús Vázquez, Saúl and Pablo Álvarez are the discards for tactical reasons.

Bruno Gama was warning about the difficulty of the game, ”We are expecting to meet a strong rival at home. We know it and want to be focused in order to avoid what happened at Sabadell. We want to be courageous and make our football in order to win. We must be focused, thinking in ourselves and knowing that every game is difficult, especially playing outside home. A lot still ahead, we are fine right now and want to stay like that.”

Finally, Argentine Diego Colotto was commenting the current situation at the standings, "I believe the present scenario is better, because before we were losing a game and there were three rivals that could surpass you; it's better to have two teams pulling up rather to have six doing it."

List of picked players (18): Aranzubia, Lux (goalkeepers); Laure, Colotto, Aythami, Ze Castro, Morel, Seoane (defenders); Juan Dominguez, Álex Bergantiños, Borja Fernández, Valerón, Guardado, Salomão, Bruno Gama (midfielders); Xisco, Lassad and Riki (strikers)

  GUADALAJARA: LACKING EXPERIENCE
CD Guadalajara is paying the price for just been completing its first year at Segunda División A; the team had a promising start  having a decent run and even been the leader by matchday 06, just before been trashed by Deportivo at the Riazor (0-4). But in 2012 things have been tough; the team from Alcarria ended 2011 with a loss before RC Celta (0-2), and later suffered three big setbacks before candidates for the promotion: 2-4 Vs. Elche CF, 0-4 at UD Almeria and 0-3 Vs. Valladolid.

After facing the favourites, it seems that things were going to be simpler, especially after achieving a 1-0 win hosting CD Numancia, but Guadalajara was put directly into the fight for permanence suffering four straight defeats against direct rivals: 2-3 at Las Palmas, 1-2 Vs. CD Xérez, 1-2 at SD Huesca and 0-2 Vs. Villarreal B. Luckily for them the bottom team have been unable to chain a streak of positive results and the latest 2-0 win visiting FC Cartagena has opened a six-point gap with relegation

Another reason why Guadalajara has decreased its performance is the poor form of its two more important players: left winger Ernesto Flores and striker Aníbal Zurdo. Ernesto has been important for his team as he has scored seven goals plus giving five assists, but in 2012 he has just scored twice, while Anibal has scored six times on the season, but only one of those goals came in 2012, which was scored in the past 2-0 win at FC Cartagena.

For the clash against Depor, coach Carlos Terrazas will present his usual 4-4-2 scheme, but with the modification of striker José Antonio Collado joining Anibal in attack. Collado is a Canarian striker that has scored four goals on the season and that’s returning after a two-match suspension.

The rest should be the same team that defeated Cartagena, with Basque Mikel Saizar defending the goal, Andalusian Antonio Moreno, who already saw three red cards plus eight yellows on the season, defends the right-back position, Madrilenian Javier Barral covers the left side, while the central positions at defense are for ex-Celta B Mickael Gaffoor and former Rayo Vallecano man David Fernández.

Ex-Cádiz Joseba Arriaga and Javi Soria perform at midfield; José Iván Moreno, who already scored five times on the season, attacks from the right flank and Ernesto does it from the left. The two wingers at Guadalajara, combined with Anibal, represent the most dangerous threat for Depor, because the trio combined has scored 18 of the 29 goals scored by the team on the season (62% of the total).

Striker Francisco José Nicolás, who scored against Cartagena and now will be on the bench, said before the game that Guadalajara is capable of defeating Depor, ”We must be strong at home, why we can’t do it before leaders Deportivo La Coruña? We must go out in order to bite, giving everything and off course to clinch the three points, because in our current situation all the points are important.”

Meanwhile Anibal was saying that his team is fearless of Deportivo, ”I hope to be able to score again and win the game; Depor is a complicate rival, a rival that we respect, but we aren’t afraid of them. Surely we had our chances in the first round, but they caught us by surprise through counterattacks and with their quality everything was decided in fifteen minutes.”

Finally, defender David Fernandez is convinced of the possibilities of his team, ”I believe that in our field we have the chance to defeat them. In the first game we had ten of fifteen minutes in which we failed, but now we are confident, because we are going out for the three points. I hope the stadium will be filled and that the fans could enjoy the match.”

List of picked players: It will be released on Saturday.
