Córdoba put the football and the scoring opportunities and Depor put the goals, that´s the resume of an entertaining match in which the Galicians are increasing their lead over RC Celta. Primera División seems a matter of time.

Both Riki and Álex Bergantiños were out of the starting formation; they were doubtful throughout the week and Oltra decided to not risk them. Therefore, Xisco was once again the starting striker, while Borja Fernandez was making his second appearance as a starter (the previous one was the 0-2 win at SD Huesca).

Still, the scheme was a 4-2-3-1 draw; Aranzubia was defending the goal, Laure played at the right-back position, Morel was at the left, while the central defenders were Ze Castro and Aythami. Juan Dominguez was joining Borja at midfield, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Guardado did it form the left, Juan Carlos Valerón was the playmaker, while Xisco was the central attacker.

At Córdoba, coach Paco Jémez was presenting the expecting 4-1-4-1 scheme, with Charles as the only central attacker, but with Javi Hervás and Borja García as the threats coming from behind. Besides, Argentine Sebastián Rakan Dubarbier was joining the attacks from the flank.

Impressive presentation of Córdoba, side that had the ball possession and put the scoring opportunities, but their lack of punch doomed Jémez and his players as Deportivo just needed to seize an error of the goalkeeper to claim the lead. The visitors knew what they were doing and cut the circuits at Depor’s midfield engine, so the Galicians never created anything by the centre and besides, they neither had depth on the wings.

Córdoba started the game strongly; it was putting a lot of pressure at midfield and Depor was asphyxiated; the visitors had two goal attempts within the first five minutes; the first was a shot of Javi Hervás that missed the target (1’), three minutes later Charles couldn’t seize a precise cross of Prieto.

Then López Silva released a long-distance shot that was searching for the top-left corner of Aranzubia, and the keeper made a great save sending the ball to corner-kick. The ex-Athletic man was going to be important throughout the clash with his six saves. Clearest was the chance that came at minute 11, Hervás found the ball at the left wing and released a precise cross that Dubarbier found at the six-yard box, but the Argentine couldn’t connect the ball properly and his attempt turned into a volley that hit the crossbar.

Depor just had its first approach until minute 12, Xisco was assisted with a precise volley by Juan Dominguez, the Majorcan was left one-one-one before visiting goalie Alberto García, but he lasted too much and couldn’t release a shot; in the next play Aranzubia missed to collect a high cross and David Prieto attempted to score from close range, but luckily the ball hit the body of Laure and then it went out.

The game was fluid and entertaining, and Xisco had a new chance after an assist of Laure, but again the Majorcan lasted too much and Alberto cleared the danger. It was a tough game until this point, the visitors were having the ball possession -79% at some point in the game- an unthinkable stat on this season, and suddenly the Galicians found a refreshing goal.

And it should be said that the goal was very lucky; Depor was throwing a free-kick at midfield after a foul over Valerón, the locals made a short play and Aythami released a high volley from midfield searching for Borja Fernández, it seemed an easy catch for Alberto, but he couldn’t held the ball and Borja was inside the six-yard box to just push the ball in and score his first goal at Depor.

The game became more equal after the goal, Córdoba was searching for the equalizer, while Depor was content locked at the back and searching for a counterattack, though there weren’t too many clear chances until the pause; the Andalusians missed more punch in attack, while Depor never found that deadly counterattack. At minute 29, the visitors couldn’t seize a dangerous free-kick and Morel cleared the danger inside the area.

Depor’s problem is that they were losing the ball pretty easy before the pressure of the rival, and when the ball reached Aranzubia, then the keeper was releasing a long clearance searching for a counterattack, but nobody was finding the long throws and it just made easier the life of the Andalusian defenders.

Córdoba had a new chance at minute 40; Fuentes released a precise cross from the left and Dubarbier found the ball inside the area, but again the Argentine winger missed the target from close range. The last chance in the half was for Morel as he released a long-distance attempt that missed the target. That was just the third shot of Depor in the game, which turned to be the lowest number completed by Depor on this season after the first 45 minutes.

Córdoba was still having the ball possession, but this time it was a thick team in attack; still Aranzubia had to make two more key saves, while Aythami seized a new distraction of the rival to certify the victory and three more points for Deportivo, the leader at Liga Adelante 2011/12. To mention that the ball possession for Depor in the game was 38%, this is the lowest percentage on this season playing at the Riazor.

Córdoba was again dominating the actions at the start of the second part, but it was Depor the side that had the first big chance on the half; again after an error of Alberto; Guardado threw a corner-kick from the left and the visiting goalie missed to catch the ball, later Xisco had the chance to score from close range, but a defender cleared the danger at the goal line (47’).

The visitors had their first big chance at minute 51, Federico Vico, who entered after the pause replacing , Juan Rafael Fuentes, found a precise drilling ball inside the area, but his attempt was deflected by Aranzubia and later cleared by Claudio Morel.

The main danger for Depor was coming through set-pieces; at minute 57 the Galicians were close to score after a corner of Guardado; Ze Castro found the loose ball at the six-yard box and again a defender cleared the danger from the goal line. One minute later Bruno Gama had his first attempt in the game, but his shot was blocked by a rival.

At minute 58, Dubarbier had his third chance of the night; this time it was a strong shot from the edge of the area that was cleared to corner-kick by Aranzubia. Then, Oltra ordered the first substitution as Riki replaced Xisco. The Majorcan looked slow and the Madrilenian was going to add more spark to the attacking line.

Then Depor scored the second goal, and as it was commented before it came after a set-piece; Guardado threw a free-kick at the left wing, the Mexican sent the ball into the far post, the defense of Cordoba, including keeper Alberto, did nothing and everybody just saw how Aythami Artiles came from behind to score the goal from the six-yard box. It´s the second goal in liga for the Canarian.

Then Oltra put Álex Bergantiños on the pitch replacing Valerón, the draw was still a 4-2-3-1, but with Juan Dominguez as the playmaker and Borja joining Álex at midfield. Despite the comfortable advantage, the visitors were still insisting; at minute 70, winger Juan Quero, another player that entered during the second part, released a drilling free-kick that was searching for the bottom-left corner of Aranzubia, and the keeper made a brilliant save.

Depor responded with a new chance in a set-piece, this time Guardado threw a corner-kick at the left and Álex Bergantiños headed the ball on target, but Alberto made a great save (74’). Paco Jémez ended the game with a 4-4-2 figure as striker Airam López replaced midfielder López Silva, but the Andalusians missed the freshness of the first part; actually they demonstrated why they are now the worst scorer among the first sixteen places in the league.

Depor was even close to score a third goal, but the volley of Riki, when he was alone before the goal, missed the target; the last modification of Oltra was the entry of Salomão for Bruno Gama. And there was time for one more chance at each side; at minute 86, Quero had a new chance from close-range, and again Aranzubia made the save, and two minutes later Guardado drilled a perfect pass to Álex, who was alone before Alberto, but the attempt of the centre midfielder from the edge of the are hit the body of the keeper.

Football it’s not just ball possession and the ability to create scoring opportunities, it’s also the quality to define the chances and why not, to enjoy of good luck. That’s the lesson that Córdoba should extract from the match disputed at the Riazor; the Andalusians deserved more in a match in which they had the ball, but that never knew how to finish. The plays  Meanwhile, Depor just capitalized the errors of the rival to extend its command at Segunda División.

The win puts Depor seven points above RC Celta and eleven over Real Valladolid, with twelve games remaining the promotion seems a matter of time. On next Saturday Depor visits Girona CF, club that’s fighting to survive at Segunda. Centre midfielder Juan Dominguez is suspended for that match as he picked a fifth yellow card on the season during this game.
