MATCHDAY 34: DEFINING SOME POSITIONS

18 Apr 2012
The Galician derby is catapulting Deportivo to the championship at Segunda División; the relegation spots seem also defined as the other Depor, CD Guadalajara, clinched a huge win on the road. The rest is undefined for the moment.

The so expected Galician derby fulfilled the expectations and turned to be one of the best Segunda matches on the present season. Oltra’s Deportivo clinched the three points thanks to a last-minute goal scored by Borja. The result not only approaches the promotion to Primera, but also the championship at Segunda División, though nine games remain in the schedule.

It’s one of the conclusions of the matchday: that Depor has big options of ending first in the league. And it’s that the victory at Balaidos opened a gap of ten points with RC Celta, while the difference remains of eight points with Real Valladolid, side that clinched a convincing 3-0 win at home before SD Huesca. The hard battle now is for the second place, which means the other direct seat to Primera, always remembering that Celta has a pending match before FC Cartagena (the final half and our will be played on May 8).

The matchday s also confirmed the resurrection of Hércules CF, side that trashed Real Murcia on the road (6-2). The Valencians have scored fifteen goals within their last three victories (5-0 Vs. Guadalajara and 4-2 Vs. Girona FC) and remain fourth at the standings.

AD Alcorcón also remains on fire; the Madrilenians defeated last place Gimnástic de Tarragona (2-0) and have now added four wins in a row. A few months ago the playoff spots were looking like a dream for them, but now they have three more points than the seventh spot and can even aspire to the direct promotion seats as they’re only eight points behind Real Valladolid, though it will be difficult.

The other four aspirants to the playoff spots are still dealing with some issues. Córdoba CF could only have a goalless game at home before mid-table club CE Sabadell and has only picked four of the last sixteen points in dispute. It was the same outcome for UD Almeria, side that remains in shadows after picking a tasteless point before Villarreal B (0-0). The Andalusians have now eight straight matches without adding the three points.

At least Elche CF, the next rival of Depor, showed some reaction after scoring a goal three minutes before the final whistle to pick up a 2-1 win at home before relegation-troubled FC Cartagena. It was the first win for the Valencians after five games without adding the three points, though they remain outside the playoff zone, four points behind sixth place Córdoba CF.

CD Numancia and UD Las Palmas are also getting out of gas after they drew 1-1 a fortnight ago; on the weekend the club from Soria came from behind from a 0-2 at minute 52, but the final 2-2 at home worth only a point and they remain six points behind the promotion zone. Meanwhile the Canarians couldn’t surpass RC Recreativo at home (0-0) and are almost discarded for the final battle.

There was also a crucial meeting in the quest for salvation, the huge victory of CD Guadalajara visiting CD Alcoyano (0-1), it was the duel between the club marking the lane of the permanence and the first club searching to leave the relegation zone; the victory of the other Depor means that they are now six points above the pit, perhaps not enough to certify the salvation, but definitely a blow over the desk that can sentence this war.

Especially since none of the other clubs living inside the pit were able to win their matches; as it was written before Nástic lost hosting AD Alcorcón (0-2), FC Cartagena was defeated by Elche CF (1-2), while Girona FC could only add a point hosting Barcelona B (1-1).

MATCHDAY 35: NEW DIRECT MEETINGS
There are three direct meetings between the first eight places during next matchday; leaders Deportivo will be hosting eighth place Elche CF, the Valencians are urgently needing the points; also interesting is to see the reaction of RC Celta after losing the derby, and they have a tough match as they visit an in-form fourth place Hércules CF.

Meanwhile fifth place AD Alcorcón hosts sixth place Córdoba, a match with the label of a final with the winner making an important step towards the playoffs. The other two clubs fighting for the promotion spots have more accessible meetings, starting with runners-up Real Valladolid, side that’s visiting a Villarreal B that’s almost saved, while UD Almeria is visiting last place FC Cartagena.

There’s also a new final for CD Guadalajara, this time they host penultimate Gimnástic Tarragona, a new win for the local will boost their salvation options. Meanwhile, Girona FC lives a Catalan derby visiting CE Sabadell and CD Alcoyano plays one of its last cards visiting RC Recreativo. SD Huesca has escaped from the relegation zone within the last matchdays, but they still need more points and have a difficult task on Saturday hosting promotion aspirant CD Numancia.
