MATCHDAY 35: KEEPING THE PACE

25 Apr 2012
Deportivo and Real Valladolid won their respective matches and both clubs are keeping the pace in the race towards Primera. Celta suffered a painful loss. Alcoyano and Girona clinched victories that revive their hopes for the salvation.

Leaders Deportivo continue with their unstoppable run towards Primera División, again with a narrow score –the 15th on the season- but the novelty this time was the score: a 4-3, the biggest score on the league together with the victory of RC Celta hosting UD Almeria a few weeks ago. The win seals an incredible round of eighteen wins, one draw and only two losses within the last twenty-one matches for the Galicians.

Real Valladolid is also on fire after clinching the fifth win in a row, this time visiting Villarreal B (1-0), Los Pucelanos have now added 19 of the last 21 points in dispute and hold on to the second place, having a five-point gap over RC Celta, side that complicated its promotion aspirations after losing at Hércules CF (0-1).

Truly RC Celta still has to play the last thirty minutes of the suspended clash with FC Cartagena, but the Galicians are running out of gas again at the last stretch of the season, now they are only two points above Hércules CF, and three over AD Alcorcón, this last team is rapidly taking the label of “surprise of the season” from the hands of Córdoba CF.

Precisely the Madrilenians beat Córdoba on the weekend (2-0) and are now fifth on the standings; it was their fifth win in a row and the ninth success within the last eleven matches in liga. AD Alcorcón has now a five-point cushion over the seventh place and they not only look as serious aspirants for the playoffs, but even for the second spot.

The sixth place, which is the last seat to participate in the promotion playoff, is now the target of three clubs that are living a negative streak. UD Almeria again dropped points at the final minutes and could only achieve a draw visiting FC Cartagena (1-1). The Andalusians haven’t been able to achieve the victory in the last nine meetings.

Elche CF left a positive impression at the Riazor, but the reality is that they have only added two victories in the last ten meetings. Meanwhile, Córdoba CF is once again living outside the promotion zone and the Andalusians have lost three of the last five games in the competition.

There were some crucial results among the clubs fighting to survive; the first one was the victory of CD Guadalajara hosting Gimnástic de Tarragona (1-0), a result that should be the first nail in the coffin of the Catalans. At the same time CD Alcoyano added its second victory in four matches after defeating RC Recreativo on the road (3-1).

Also, Girona CF succeeded in the mini-derby visiting CE Sabadell (2-3), therefore the difference between the 19th place and the safety remain of six points. Nástic is now the last place at the standings after FC Cartagena added a point hosting UD Almeria (1-1). Finally, Real Murcia is again involved in the fight for the permanence after suffering a third loss in a row, this time visiting Barcelona B (0-1). The Murcians have the current worst streak in the league with eleven defeats suffered within the last thirteen matches.

MATCHDAY 36: NEW DIRECT MEETINGS
The season is getting to an end, and with eight matchdays remaining in the calendar, the mathematics are starting to confirm some facts. The first is that Deportivo could be the first team securing the spot for the playoff in case of achieving a new victory and if seventh place Córdoba CF loses on the weekend. However, Depor searches for higher goals and is more focused in the distance with the third place.

There are some very interesting direct meetings on the weekend; firstly leaders Deportivo are visiting sixth place UD Almeria, then fourth place Hércules CF is visiting ninth place Elche CF; without forgetting the clash between third place RC Celta and eighth place Barcelona B.

Runners-up Real Valladolid have an accessible match hosting penultimate FC Cartagena, while fifth place AD Alcorcón will try to continue with its ascending course visiting relegation-troubled Girona FC. Seventh spot Córdoba will attempt to reenter into the promotion zone as it hosts CD Guadalajara, club that’s currently marking the frontier for the salvation.

There’s also a direct meeting at the bottom as Gimnástic de Tarragona is hosting CD Alcoyano in what should be one of the last opportunities for both clubs in order to leave the pit. Finally, Real Murcia will try to avoid further problems as it hosts CE Sabadell, the Catalans also see the game as a final as a defeat could put them directly into the fight for the permanence.
