MATCHDAY 36: BATTLE AT THE TOP

01 May 2012
Only Deportivo lost among the first six places at the standings, reason why the battle for the two direct seats to Primera is more complicated; the bottom teams still wasting the opportunity to save themselves from relegation.

The clubs at the top of liga Adelante are hurrying up the chances in order to improve their positions and meet the goal of promotion. UD Almeria broke its negative streak of nine games without achieving the three points and clinched a resounding victory over leaders Deportivo (2-0).

Second place Real Valladolid suffered more of what was expected and a goal four minutes before the final whistle gave them a 2-1 win at home facing FC Cartagena. RC Celta was losing at half-time against Barcelona B (0-1), but a reaction in the second part gave them a placid 4-1 triumph.

Meanwhile, Hércules CF continued with its lately good form achieving a huge 3-0 win in the derby of Alicante visiting Elche CF. It’s a hard hit for Elche that could leave them without the chance to dispute the promotion playoff.  AD Alcorcón cut its streak of five straight wins, but still the Madrilenians clinched a vital point visiting Girona FC (0-0). Finally, Córdoba CF achieved an important victory against CD Guadalajara (3-2).

The results are leaving a clear picture: there are seven clubs fighting for the fix six places. The first four, Deportivo, Real Valladolid, RC Celta and Hércules CF, are the sides that want to clinch the two automatic seats to Primera, while AD Alcorcón, UD Almeria and Córdoba CF are trying to get the last two tickets for the playoffs.

The nightmare at the relegation zone continues, only Gimnástic Tarragona was able to win during the weekend, but CD Guadalajara lost its match too and the difference within the pit and salvation remains in six points, but with one less matchdays to be played.

Despite a late goal, CD Guadalajara lost visiting Córdoba CF (2-3), while CD Alcoyano lost before direct rival Gimnástic Tarragona (0-2), then Girona CF could only grab a point from AD Alcorcón playing at home (0-0), and FC Cartagena caressed a point at Real Valladolid, but returned home empty handed (1-2).

CD Guadalajara has had a terrible second round, losing 9 of 15 matches disputed in the period, but the point is that the clubs at the pit aren’t reacting. FC Cartagena has lost 9 of its last 13 games, Nástic has lost three of the last four meetings, while FC Cartagena hasn’t achieved a victory within the last nine matchdays. Only FC Girona has showed some little reaction adding 9 of the last 18 points in dispute, but it isn’t enough.

Therefore, the only modification at the standings is that Nástic is no longer the last place, now FC Cartagena is once again at the bottom of the table, 13 points under the safety with 21 points still to be disputed, plus the pending half an hour before RC Celta. The Catalans and FC Cartagena seem to be the first two clubs that will confirm their relegation to Segunda B, while Girona FC, CD Alcoyano and CD Guadalajara CF will probably fight until the end in order to avoid the drama.

MATCHDAY 37: THE FINAL OF SEGUNDA?
Next weekend all eyes will be in the meeting between leaders Deportivo and runners-up Real Valladolid, a match that could not only decide one of the direct spots to Primera, but also who will earn the championship at Liga Adelante.  There’s a second meeting between clubs at the top as fourth place Hércules CF is hosting sixth spot UD Almeria.

Third place RC Celta is having a lot of casualties at the team and has to visit relegated-troubled CE Sabadell, while fifth place AD Alcorcón has an accessible match at home facing Real Murcia. Seventh place Córdoba CF has a tough visit to a desperate CD Alcoyano, and Elche can’t fail anymore as it visits an always complicated Barcelona B.

At the bottom of the standings, there’s a final as FC Girona visits CD Guadalajara; the Catalans need the three points to approach the safety lane, while the other Depor wants to clinch the permanence as soon as possible. Gimnástic de Tarragona visits RC Recreativo trying to clinch a second straight win in the competition, something the Catalans only did once on this season, finally FC Cartagena can’t fail anymore as the Murcians host a CD Numancia that’s playing for nothing.

PRIMERA: THE FIRST RELEGATED CLUB IS RACING
Liga BBVA has already decided the first relegated club for the season 2012/13: Racing Santander. The Cantabrians spent the last decade at Primera –their biggest run at the elite- but are falling down in the year of their centenary. They lost 0-3 visiting Real Sociedad and are already demoted with three matchdays remaining in the schedule. It has been a terrible season for them, having all kind of legal issues plus the fact of only completing four victories in the liga tournament.

The other two clubs going down will be decided in the coming two weeks; Real Zaragoza and Sporting Gijón have been living at the pit for a while, but a late reaction is giving them big chances to save the spot at Primera. The other two clubs involved in the mess are Villarreal CF and Granada CF and things might be decided at the last matchday.
