DEPORTIVO IN MAY (AND JUNE)

02 May 2012
Final stretch on the Segunda season, it’s the moment of truth for a Deportivo that wants to fulfill the forecast and achieve the promotion back to the elite. Seven games are remaining in the schedule, six of them will be played in May.

The moment of truth has arrived, only seven matchdays are remaining in the calendar and all the teams are hurrying up their options in order to clinch the goals. Deportivo wants to confirm as soon as possible its promotion to Primera División; for it Oltra’s team will need three or four more victories, and the first test is the toughest one: current second place Real Valladolid.

The violet team is currently on fire as it has clinched six straight victories, three of them by a margin of three or more goals. Valladolid has added 22 of the last 24 points in dispute and clearly is a real threat for Depor’s streak of 13 consecutive wins at the Riazor. The match is so important that it will also have a direct impact in the winner of the title at Liga Adelante.

After this important clash Deportivo will face six matches against rivals that will probably be playing for nothing, starting with the visit to CD Numancia.  The club from Soria was an aspirant to the promotion, but their latest form –it only added two of the last twelve points in dispute- left the team nine points behind the sixth place, and with a 15-point gap over relegation, the season is almost over for them.

UD Las Palmas is the penultimate rival visiting the Riazor on this season; it’s another rival lowering its aspirations after been a candidate for the playoffs; the Canarians have missed to achieve the three points within the last six matches and currently they are two points below Numancia, just in the middle of nowhere-land. This game will be played in midweek and launches a busy period of five games played within eighteen days.

Xérez CD is the next rival in the schedule, Depor visits the Chapin stadium and if the Galicians continue with their current run of results, then this could be the first opportunity to celebrate the promotion. The Andalusians are another club in nowhere land, one point behind UD Las Palmas, but the difference is that they are passing through a positive streak –seven of the last nine points added- It means that they will be probably saved by the time Depor passes through Andalusia.

A second game in midweek during May will be the visit to Gimnàstic de Tarragona, and again Depor will be facing a rival playing for nothing, because, despite their recent win in liga, the Catalans are eleven points behind the safety, so they will probably be relegated at the moment of facing Oltra’s Deportivo, unfaithful destiny for a club returning to Segunda B after ten straight years at Segunda and Primera. This is a rescheduled matchday consequence of the strike had at the beginning of la liga.

The penultimate match on the season, and hopefully the last match of Depor at the Riazor before returning to Primera, will be against SD Huesca. The Aragonians spent the major part of the season living inside the relegation zone, but they have reacted right on time and their four victories within the last five matches opened a relieving nine-point gap over the pit, so they will probably be saved by the time of the game, meaning another rival facing Deportivo without the need of the points.

And the last game on the Segunda season is the visit to Villarreal B, the mini-submarine is another club that had relegation problems in the past, but that has reacted lately as they have won three of their last six matches in liga; for this reason they are ten points above the pit and will surely be saved before this match, so Depor will face, for the fifth time in a row, a rival that’s playing for nothing. This is the only match that will played in the month of June
