MATCHDAY 37: TOUGH FIGHT AT THE TOP

09 May 2012
The distance has been reduced at the top of the standings as the first three places are battling for the two direct seats to Primera, meanwhile there was a crucial result at the bottom that complicates the struggle to survive at Liga Adelante.

RC Celta is the big winner of the week, though they missed a great chance to cut five points with leaders Deportivo. The club from Vigo clinched an important 2-1 victory visiting CE Sabadell, but on Tuesday they missed the chance to score a goal in the remaining half an hour of the meeting against FC Cartagena and the game ended as it started (1-1).

Meanwhile Depor was seeing as its streak of victories at the Riazor was cut by a last-minute goal of runners-up Real Valladolid (1-1). Deportivo remains as the first place, Los Vaisoletanos are second with 71 points, two more than RC Celta. These three clubs are separated by seven points and definitely these are the teams that will fight for the two direct seats to Primera in the remaining six matchdays of the season.

The other three spots for the playoffs are also witnessing a tough battle; Hércules CF and UD Almeria cancelled their latest reaction with a goalless match, while AD Alcorcón remains on fire; the Madrilenians clinched a 3-0 win over Real Murcia and have now added six victories within their last seven liga meetings.

Córdoba CF lost a good chance to reenter into the promotion zone as it only clinched a 3-3 draw visiting relegation-troubled CD Alcoyano (3-3), though it’s also a good result as they were losing 1-3 ten minutes before the final whistle. Finally, Elche CF bounced back after losing heavily in the Valencian derby and clinched a 1-0 win visiting Barcelona B.

Hércules CF remain fourth at the standings, though only having one more point than AD Alcorcón. Almeria is sixth tied in points with Córdoba CF, and Elche CF is five points behind. To mention that Deportivo is the first team already qualified to the playoffs, though the Galicians are searching to end among the first two places.

Meanwhile, the drama continues at the bottom; CD Guadalajara suffered a big hit as it lost 1-4 hosting Girona CF, their biggest lost a home on this season. Now there are only four points separating both clubs, always remembering that Guadalajara is marking the lane of salvation at Segunda. Girona is living a great moment as the Catalans haven’t been defeated within the last four games, achieving two wins in the period.

CD Alcoyano was also close to give a big step towards the safety, but it couldn’t hold on a 3-1 advantage over Córdoba CF and ended dropping two valuable points. Gimnástic de Tarragona was also very close to achieve the three points visiting RC Recreativo, but a last-minute goal leveled the scoresheet (2-2). Finally, FC Cartagena defeated CD Numancia. It was the first victory in two months for the Murcians, and later rescued a point at home against RC Celta (1-1).

Despite the disappointments after dropping points at the end of the games, the clubs in relegation should be content; actually none of them lost during the weekend, which occurs for the first time on the season. Still, the situation remains discouraging for both Nástic and Cartagena, because they’re ten and nine points behind the safety, and with only eighteen points to be disputed, they need a miracle.
