LOSING KEY PLAYERS

24 Jun 2012
It has been a constant within the last eight years; Deportivo is dropping each year important players both at defense and offense. The club has lost seven of the last eight Pichichis, while nine key players at defense left the club within the last six years.

The exit of Diego Colotto means an important casualty for Oltra ahead of the coming season, but the true is that it shouldn’t be a surprise at Deportivo. And it’s that within the last six years the club has lost nine key players at defense, and the positive news is that almost all of them were replaced by a new figure that filled their shoes.

It all started for the season 2006/07; for that campaign Depor lost goalkeeper José Francisco Molina, who played all the liga games on the liga tournament 2005/06; and then he left A Coruña as El Loquillo was ending his contract. The club also lost central defender Álvaro Arbeloa, who just played 20 games in liga as he was sold to Liverpool CF at the middle of the season. Both were replaced with Dudu Aouate and Albert Lopo, duo that filled the gaps earning a protagonic role at the team.

One year later the sacrificed ones were centre back Jorge Andrade, left-back Joan Capdevila and keeper Dudu Aouate; the first was sold to Juventus for €12 million, while the second left Deportivo after ending his contract. Meanwhile Aouate left Depor by the door out after his fight with Munúa and ended at RCD Mallorca for one million Euros. The exits didn’t affect the defense, because the tandem Lopo-Coloccini gave a step forward at the centre of the defense, while Filipe Luis gained the starting role at the left side of the defense and Aranzubia landed in La Coruña in order to claim the spot at the goal.

For the season 2008/09 the turn was for Fabricio Coloccini, who was sold to Newcastle United for €11.5 million, that same year Diego Colotto arrived to Deportivo, though it was Ze Castro who stepped at the centre of the defense in order to claim the spot alongside Albert Lopo, at least for that season.

There were no exits at defense ahead of the campaign 2009/10, but one year later left-back Filipe Luis left Deportivo after been transferred to Atletico Madrid for €13.5 million. Perhaps this has been the dark spot in this story as neither Claudio Morel nor Knut Rindarøy nor Ayoze Diaz have convinced the fans.

Albert Lopo left Deportivo on the past season, which allowed to Ze Castro to regain a protagonic role at the centre of the defense; now Diego Colotto is closing the cycle as Depor awaits to know who will be the one that continues with this relay race.

But this behavior can also be applied to the attacking line, and it’s that seven of the last eight Pichichis at Deportivo left the club exactly after ending as the top-scorer in liga. These are the cases of Albert Luque (11 goals, 2004/05), Diego Tristan (11 goals, 2005-06), Javier Arizmendi (5 goals, 2006-07), Xisco (9 goals, 2007-08), Ángel Lafita (8 goals, 2008-09), Adrian López (7 goals, 2010-11)  and Lassad Nouioui (14 goals, 2011-12).

The exit of Lassad isn’t totally confirmed, but it’s the most probable thing. The only exception within the last seven years is Riki, the Madrilenian stays at Deportivo despite ending the season 2009-10 as the Pichichi in liga scoring eight goals. Within the period there have been other painful exits at the team, like Joan Verdú, who was the second best scorer on the season 2008/09 (7 goals plus 4 assists), and more recently Andrés Guardado, who on the season that has ended blasted double-digits marks scoring ten goals and providing twelve assists (liga).

The impact has been higher at offense compared to the defense, not only because Deportivo has failed to sign an important goal scorer, but also in an economic sense. It’s true that Depor collected €29.25 million with the exit of the seven Pichichis, but certainly it should have been more money taking in mind that players like Adrián, Guardado, Lassad and Verdú left the club for free. Meanwhile, more money was collected with the eight defensive players that left the club (€42 million).
