PREVIEW: RAYO VALLECANO – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

06 Oct 2012
Depor’s players are assuming the game as an important clash in order to add points; there are two changes in the lineup and Salomão returns. Rayo Vallecano, meanwhile, is switching the scheme with three defenders after the latest defeats.

STATISTICS: GOOD RESULTS IN VALLECAS
The Estadio de Vallecas -known before as Teresa Rivero stadium- has always represented a positive visit for Deportivo. The Galicians have achieved ten victories after twenty-four presentations there, only losing twice playing at Primera División. The last defeat there for Depor occurred on the campaign 2001-02 (2-1).

Actually, the Estadio de Vallecas witnessed the biggest away victory in liga for Deportivo within the last seventeen years: a 0-6 win on the season 1995/96 (matchday 17). It was in the years of the Super Depor era with Toshack‘s Depor having six different scorers in the game: Donato, Aldana, Alfredo, Bebeto, Manjarín and Lopez Recarte.  Curiously, Paco Jemez was part of the team, though he didn’t play in the game.

Now, both Depor and Rayo Vallecano arrive to the clash needing the points and after suffering consecutive defeats; in the case of the Galicians two straight losses with the team allowing eight goals, while the Madrilenians are dragging three straight defeats allowing ten goals in the process.

A negative stat for Deportivo is that the Galician outfit has been unable to win any of its last thirteen away meetings at Primera División. The last time Depor clinched the three points at Liga BBVA playing away from the Riazor was a 1-2 win at San Mamés facing Athletic Bilbao (January 2, 2011). Since that day the team has only clinched seven draws plus suffering six defeats.

DEPORTIVO: THE AWAY CHALLENGE
The home condition is an important asset in order to guarantee the permanence, but on this league it isn’t enough to clinch the goal, so the points added on the road are pure gold, something that can even decide who goes down and who doesn’t. In the case of Deportivo this factor is now more important as the Galician outfit already lost five of the first nine points disputed at home.

Oltra and the players stated that this game isn’t a “final”, but it should be understood as a great opportunity to recover the lost ground; after all the Blanquiazul team has spent a year in a half without tasting the three points at Primera performing away from the Riazor. It’s a great opportunity because Rayo Vallecano is a rival from the “same league”, though it doesn’t mean that it will be easy. The Madrilenians are the second worst defense in the league with thirteen goals allowed so far, but only two of them were leaked at home.

The only player at the injury room is Manuel Pablo, precisely the Canarian is the main modification at the starting eleven; his spot at the right-back position will be for Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’. The rest of the defense is the same one that played at the Bernabéu stadium with Dani Aranzubia at the goal, Evaldo Fabiano at the left side, while the centre backs are Ze Castro and Carlos Marchena.

The main doubt in the 4-2-3-1 figure is who will be the partner of Abel Aguilar at midfield; Álex Bergantiños was the starter on the past clash with Real Madrid, but Oltra could recall Juan Dominguez for the job.

Bruno Gama should remain on the right wing, Pizzi will attack from the right wing; Juan Carlos Valerón should be returning into the playmaking function and Riki will stay at the centre of the attack. It means that Depor’s tactician is only making two changes to the starting eleven that was trashed in Madrid.

Diogo Salomão has been picked for the first time on the season; he’s taking the spot of André Santos, who is out for the first time. The other players ruled out for tactical reasons are left-back Tiago Pinto, right winger Saúl Fernández, right-back Diego Seoane, centre midfielder Jesús Vázquez, centre back Roderick Miranda and striker Rodolfo Bodipo.

Álex Bergantiños believes that it’s going to be a very equal game, ”Rayo is also trying to avenge the latest result; it’s a daring team that sometimes plays with a line of three defenders, so they can propose a crazy game and therefore we need to do the right things. We are coming after suffering two defeats, though facing strong teams, and we need to be focused for an important game in which we need to add the three points. The team needs to regain the confidence and it’s important to clinch the victory against a team from our same level, Rayo.”

Dani Aranzubia, meanwhile, was saying that this game isn’t a final for Deportivo, ”If we think that the game in Vallecas is a final then we are wrong, .We can't travel there with that feeling. Truly later we have to face Barcelona and it’s important to add points now and if it’s possible to win, but can’t go there with that idea. It’s going to be a tough game. We must do the right things.”

It’s a special game for Javier Camuñas, because he debuted at Primera with Rayo Vallecano; he was trying to avoid panic attacks after the latest results, ”I don’t like extreme situations; we need to have both feet on the ground and be wise. We can’t be pessimistic, instead we must go game by game; we must try to add the three points on Saturday, then we will have nine and since that point we must enjoy the break in la liga and start preparing the next game.”

Laure was emphasizing the importance of this game, “I believe it’s important because this is our league; you can lose with Real Madrid and it’s important if we add points in this match; we are not hurried to win a game, but it’s important to add the points in this clash, so we must travel there in order to add the points. I believe we can end watching a pretty game.”

It was exactly the same speech of Bruno Gama, ”We are conscious that this is an important game, and we want to play in order to win. It’s important; we are aware of it. We are confident in our style and are aware that it’s a difficult visit. Our thought is that this game is important, but that we aren’t in a hurry.”

List of picked players (18): Aranzubia, Lux (goalkeepers); Ayoze, Ze Castro, Marchena, Aythami, Laure, Evaldo (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Domínguez, Abel Aguilar, Bruno Gama, Pizzi, Salomão, Camuñas, Valerón (midfielders); Riki & Nélson Oliveira (strikers).

RAYO VALLECANO: THE DILEMMA OF THE 3 DEFENDERS
The Madrilenians had a strong start clinching two victories within the first two matches in liga, in those clashes new coach Paco Jémez used a 4-2-3-1 figure at the started lineup, but later he decided to switch into a more daring scheme based in a line of three defenders, which went from a 3-4-3 used for the visit to Atletico Madrid to a 3-5-2 figure implemented in the visit to Real Valladolid, in both games the team ended defeated and allowing a lot of goals, but the criticism arose until the latest humiliating defeat at the José Zorrilla stadium (1-6).

The media understands that Rayo isn’t a team prepared to play with this scheme, and Jémez himself admitted after the loss against Real Valladolid that “perhaps the team would have competed better with another draw”. So, it’s expected that now the former Depor defender is going to switch back into the 4-2-3-1 scheme in order to have a better balance on the pitch, and mainly at defense as the team has allowed ten goals within the last three matches.

Jémez was testing several draws throughout the week; he even begun training the 3-4-3, but then switched back into the 4-2-3-1, even with players that have barely performed on the season like ex-Racing Manuel Arana, but ultimately it’s expected that the Canarian coach will keep trusting in the same group of men.

Despite the six goals allowed against Valladolid, Galician keeper Rubén Martínez will stay at the goal; ex-Alcorcón Roberto Román Triguero ´Tito´ performs at the right-back position, Andalusian José Manuel Casado defends the left sector, while the central positions at defense are for ex-Sporting Alejandro Gálvez and Catalan Jordi Amat.

Asturian Javi Fuego is joined by ex-Celta Roberto Trashorras at midfield
Veteran Francisco Medina ´Piti’ covers the right wing, former AEK Athens José Carlos attacks from the left, Argentine Alejandro ‘Chori’ Domínguez is the playmaker in the scheme; the former River Plate man was the one that scored the lonely goal against Real Valladolid.

Finally Brazilian sensation Leonardo Carrilho ´Leo’ is the central attacker. Leo is only 20 and is considered to be one of the main promises in la liga after scoring twice in this start of la liga; this is just his first full season at Primera after dragging all kind of injuries that avoided him to shine on the past campaign. Montenegrin Andrija Delibasic is the other player at the team that has netted twice on the season; he will be on the bench; the same goes for Danish Nicki Bille, this last attacker is not living a good moment at the team, scoreless and with only four shots on target on this beginning of season.

Ex-Celta Roberto Trashorras was optimistic ahead of the clash with Depor, ”The message is that we are living a good situation, having seven points and are thinking of next game, which is important and we want to add the three points. Against Depor it will be difficult, just like any other game, but we are playing at home, we are coming after several games without adding the points and must be confident. It’s a pretty good opportunity before our people, because despite been a difficult opponent the true is that we can win.”

Finally, Leo was giving his impression on what to expect from Depor, ”We wait for the same Deportivo; I believe they´re coming willful, but we are also willful and hoping to do the right things. We´re working hard in order to complete a great game and let’s hope that things will work out this time.”
