Two teams trying to avoid the relegation are meeting each other in Copa; Oltra is almost changing the entire team, which includes the debut of Insua as a starter. Caparrós is making lesser changes at Mallorca, though there’s a sense of crisis at the club.

After the 1-1 draw of the first-leg, Deportivo need the victory in Majorca or to clinch a draw scoring at least twice. A new 1-1 score will lead the series to extra-times and subsequently to the penalty shootout. This is the 20th opportunity in which the Galicians are facing a second-leg in Copa Del Rey after drawing the first game playing at the Riazor.

And only in 5 of the previous 19 opportunities Depor were able to pass the round. The last time was on the fourth round of the season 1998/99; Irureta’s Deportivo ended 1-1 at the Riazor facing Sporting Gijón, but in the returning leg played at El Molinón the Blanquiazul outfit was able to achieve a 0-1 victory with a goal scored by Donato –he also scored the goal in the first-leg.

A decade before, on the campaign 1988/89, Deportivo had a goalless home game facing Real Sociedad as part of the fifth round in Copa, the returning-leg ended 1-1 and the series was defined in the penalty shootout with keeper Jorge Garcia stopping two penalties.  On the season 1983/84 there was another 0-0 in the first-leg played at the Riazor, this time facing Castellon (4th round).  The second-leg meant a 0-1 win for the Galicians with a goal scored by Vicente Celeiro

On the season 1970/71 there was a Galician derby in Copa for the 6th round of the tournament; the first-leg played at the Riazor ended 0-0, and in the second game Loureda and Rubiñan scored at Balaídos to clinch a 0-2 victory and the pass to quarterfinals. On the season 1966/67, there was a 2-2 draw at the Riazor facing Lerida for the second round in Copa, the second-leg ended 0-0 and it was necessary a third game in order to define the series; Depor secured the pass with a 4-1 win playing in Bilbao.

The rotations return to Deportivo as Oltra unleashes the less habitual players for the Copa competition. Among the long list of novelties is Pablo Insua, the centre-back from Fabril that debuted on Sunday at San Mamés replacing Roderick for the final eleven minutes. In this way the 19-year-old defender will debut in the two competitions played by Deportivo and all in a matter of three days.

Insua, a regular at the youth teams of Spain, has already played 74 games with Deportivo B and seems to be the next of a few youngsters coming from Fabril that will step into the first team, though Oltra confessed on Wednesday that the youngster wouldn’t be playing if the coach would have had the four centre-backs at the team.

And it’s that Roderick Miranda is dragging a hamstring problem from the past game with Athletic Bilbao, so three of the four centre-backs at the first team are out injured as Ze Castro and Carlos Marchena remain on the sidelines. In the end Oltra only picked Insua and Aythami Artiles for that position.

Taking in mind that only three days will separate this game from the liga clash against real Betis, Oltra will make nine changes compared to the team that played at San Mamés. German Lux remains at the goal, but only because Aranzubia will return from suspension in order to play in liga.

Manuel Pablo will cover the right side of the defense; the Canarian is the player with more appearances in Copa among the 26 men at the first team (36 with Depor). Brazilian Evaldo Fabiano returns after been replaced at half-time of the game against Rayo Vallecano (Oct 6); he will perform on the left side of the defense.

Aythami is the second player repeating his participation at the starting eleven; he will join Insua at the centre of the defense. At midfield, André Santos and Jesús Vázquez are having a chance to prove their skills.

Juan Dominguez will perform as a playmaker, function he already accomplished in the past and at the youth teams of the club. Javier Camuñas performs at the right wing, Tiago Pinto will play on the left, job he has done before in past friendly meetings. Finally, Rodolfo Bodipo is the central attacker.

The other three players at the injury room are striker Nélson Oliveira, right winger Saul Fernandez and left winger Diogo Salomão, this last player is already training with the rest of the group, but it’s too soon for him to be picked for a game. Finally, left-back Ayoze, right-back Laure and midfielder Abel Aguilar have been rested and they weren’t picked for the clash.

Lux commented the fact of been facing his former club, ”It’s an important game for me. It was a good place for me in a personal sense, not so good in the collective, because I didn’t play so often. My child was born there, so I have good memories. For me this competition is important, thinking in me and my team mates with lesser minutes. We should know the main goal, but the Cup is important for everybody. We must be solid in defense, avoiding allowing goals and later go up front in order to score. Our obligation is to score.”

List of picked players (18): Aranzubia, Lux (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Ínsua, Aythami, Diego Seoane, Tiago Pinto, Evaldo (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, André Santos, Jesús Vázquez, Bruno Gama, Pizzi, Camuñas, Valerón (midfielders); Riki & Bodipo (strikers).

The situation at RCD Mallorca is pretty similar to what Deportivo have lived in recent weeks; the Bermellón outfit has escaped relegation all season long, but they’re currently the most out of form team among the twenty clubs at Primera as they only added one of the last 24 points disputed in the league tournament. Coach Joaquin Caparrós is under fire due to the poor results, and to make things worse there are internal disputes among the two major shareholders at the club, Sera Ferrer and Pedro Terrasa.

Terrasa is questioning the performance of failed signings like Brazilian Ratinho and there will be a tense meeting on Monday in order to explain the issue and also the current poor form of the team. Besides the club is currently in administration and already confirmed that it won’t be possible to make signings in the winter window.  The club lost a lot of money on last season, though the financial reports are talking of a positive result of €3 million, but this is just an accounting trick as the club reported an income of €15 million that corresponds to the amount saved after the club entered into the administration figure.

If this isn’t enough the fans are disenchanted, currently the average attendance to the Iberostar stadium is just 13,560 fans; the third lowest at Primera, only above Getafe (10,083) and Rayo Vallecano (11,085).  Now Caparrós faces this uncomfortable situation ben forced to play two competitions in a matter of four days.

Winger Emilio Nsue commented the situation lived by his team, ”We are not happy with the current scenario. It is not a good place to be in, but we're not dead. We have had a lot of injuries and have suffered with the calendar. It’s normal to have doubts when you lose so many games, but we all believe in the coach. If we win in Copan and then beat Real Zaragoza at the weekend, then everything will look better. We are all looking forward for Thursday’s game and will try to do our best. We know the fans want to do well in this competition, so we will go out and try to score the first goal.”

In the end Caparrós will mix normal starters with some substitutes for the game against Depor; the Andalusian coach will release the list of picked players until today as he will wait for a final training session on the day of the match. But on Wednesday he confirmed that ex-Depor Dudu Aouate will stay defending the goal as he did in the first-leg.

Portuguese José Carlos de Araujo Nunes is returning from an injury and will have his first minutes in a while, though probably he will be replaced in the second part. He will join his compatriot Pedro Geromel at the centre of the defense. Geromel was the one that scored the equalizer at the Riazor. Joaquín Navarro ‘Ximo’ will perform at the right side of the defense, while Pedro Bigas will do it at the left.

Veteran José Luis Martí and French Michael Pereira will play at midfield territory; Emilio Nsue will attack from the right wing, Alejandro Alfaro will do it from the left, Mexican Giovani Dos Santos will be the playmaker and ex-Depor Javier Arizmendi the central attacker.  Caparrós confirmed that midfielder Javier Márquez and striker Álvaro Giménez will be part of the team and they will probably enjoy minutes in the second part.

List of picked players: It will be released until Thursday
