PAULO ASSUNCAO SIGNS FOR DEPOR

08 Jan 2013
The second signing of Deportivo for the winter window 2013 is centre midfielder Paulo Assunção, the Brazilian/Portuguese man passed the medicals on Monday and was later presented to the public.

Last week it was commented the interest of Deportivo in Paulo Assunção, and on Sunday’s night it was known that the Brazilian player was on his way to A Coruña in order to sign for Deportivo after canceling his contract with São Paulo. In the end he signed as a free-agent a contract for two and a half years, besides he has the option of an additional year depending of objectives.

The ex-Atlético Madrid man represents the second signing of Depor for the winter window 2013 and also the sixth centre midfielder at the team after Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, Abel Aguilar, Jesús Vázquez and André Santos.  New coach Paciência knows Assunção from their stage at FC Porto.

Assunção is an experienced player with some titles added to his resume; he spent a decade playing in Europe –Portugal, Greece and Spain- including four seasons at Atlético Madrid, club where he conquered two UEFA Europa League titles. He also achieved three league titles in Portugal with FC Porto. Six month ago he returned to Brazil and signed for São Paulo, but it didn’t work out and now he’s back in Europe.

With this signing Depor’s first team is now composed by 27 players, two of these men are inscribed as B team members (Tiago Pinto & Diego Seoane), so there are no available spots for new signings, which means that in case of attempting a new incorporations the club must first allow the exit of at least one player.

During the presentation president Lendoiro confirmed the terms of the operation, “Assunção is a player of Deportivo for the remaining of this season plus other two; he also has the chance of a third year depending of objectives. We thank him for the sacrifice of joining Depor, because Assunção is earning at Depor what he could easily earn in six months in Brazil.” He even compared him with Mauro Silva, “For his style, not for the level, he may be similar to Mauro Silva.”

Meanwhile, Assunção was pleased to sign for Depor as other Brazilians did in the past, “For me it’s a real pleasure to sign for such a big club like Depor. I’m happy to return to Spain. I want to thank the president for his effort. In Brazil, people still talking of Depor. We remember other Brazilians at the club as Mauro Silva or Djalminha.” He also said to be fit to play for the upcoming game against Real Sociedad, “I will start training tomorrow with the rest of the team and am available for Sunday.”

EXITS & RENEWALS
Sportpaper Deporte Campeón understands that Deportivo will attempt a final signing for the winter window: a new striker. But currently there are no available spots at the team and the club will make this final move only if someone leaves. The club is trying to get rid of centre midfielder Jesus Vázquez, striker Rodolfo Bodipo, right-back Diego Seoane, left-back Tiago Pinto and right winger Saul Fernandez. Besides, it is commented that Recreativo de Huelva and SD Huesca are interested in the loan of playmaker Juan Carlos, though this last one is inscribed as a B team player.

In recent days it has been commented that Premier League club Swansea City was interested in centre midfielder Juan Dominguez, who is in the wishing list of Swans boss Michael Laudrup. It was commented that a possibility was a swamp for striker Danny Graham (27), but this is a remote possibility as the most probable thing is that he will stay in the Premier League.

Actually, during the presentation of Assunção, Lendoiro denied to have any contact with other clubs regarding the exit of the Galician midfielder. What he admitted is the possibility of exits, “I hope that two player will leave the team. Regarding new signing, for now everything is quiet. No one is close to sign and we are taking the situation with calm.” Finally, the president announced that on Tuesday the club could announce the renewal of one or more players.
