MATCHDAY 18: SMALL CHANGES

09 Jan 2013
No big changes at the standings; only that Deportivo left the bottom of the table. The first round hasn’t ended, but Barca is virtually the Champion at Primera. The situation is tighter at the bottom, with only four points separating the last six places.

New year in the Spanish la liga, but life continued the same as there were no major changes after the penultimate matchday at liga BBVA. The biggest change is that Deportivo are no longer the last place after a refreshing 1-0 hosting Malaga CF. It was the debut of Domingos Paciência and the third win on the campaign for the Galicians.

The new last place is CA Osasuna, side that suffered a new loss visiting Sevilla FC thanks to a late goal of Spahić (1-0). The other club in relegation, RCD Espanyol, also lost, though it was a biggest defeat visiting leaders FC Barcelona (4-0). The situation remain tight at the bottom as Granada CF also lost in the weekend, the Andalusians also allowed a late goal to end suffering a new defeat at home, this time hosting Valencia CF (1-2).

Granada is the worst local team with only seven points added in this condition, reason why they are only one point above the pit. Neither RCD Mallorca capitalized the home condition after they only added a point hosting Atlético Madrid (1-1). Still, the Majorcans should be content as they rescued the draw four minutes before the final whistle.

RC Celta was the other big winner after clinching a refreshing 3-1 win hosting Real Valladolid; it’s their first victory within the last five matches. Athletic Bilbao also remain close to the danger zone, six points above the pit, this after a disappointing loss visiting Levante UD (3-1).

FC Barcelona have now a eleven-point gap over Atletico Madrid after the 1-1 draw at Soin Moix. This is only the 2nd time in la liga that a leader has that kind of advantage after just 18 matches (the previous time was the season 2008/09).  Real Madrid remain at the third spot after a thrilling 4-3 win over Real Sociedad. It was a polemic match with Casillas on the bench, only to go out to the pitch after the early expulsion of Adan.

Malaga CF is fourth, though tied in points after the 1-2 victory of Real Betis visiting Real Zaragoza. It shouldn’t be a surprise as both teams set a record. For the first time in the history Los Maños have lost six of their first nine home meetings, while for the first time in their history the Andalusians have won six of their first nine visits in the league. Finally, Rayo Vallecano clinched for the first time on the season three straight victories after a comfortable 3-1 success hosting Getafe CF. Now they are 7th at the table.
