MATCHDAY 19: ONLY A FEW GOALS SCORED

16 Jan 2013
The last matchday of the first round at Primera División was the 6th worst in terms of goals scored. Six teams ended scoreless. Tight situation at the bottom, while FC Barcelona broke all the records at the top of the standings.

Only 24 goals were scored in matchday 19 at Liga BBVA, which means that it was the sixth lowest matchday in terms of goals in favour. Six of the twenty teams in the league ended scoreless. The toughest situation is located at the bottom of the standings, with six clubs separated by just three points. For the first time on the season the three clubs living in relegation didn’t lose during the same matchday, the big winner was RCD Espanyol, side that clinched a 1-0 win over direct rival RC Celta to leave the drop zone.

The other two clubs on the pit clinched a draw, starting with Deportivo, side that added a 1-1 draw visiting Real Sociedad. CA Osasuna drew at home facing Real Madrid, a match that turned to be a real boredom (0-0). Meanwhile, Granada CF grabbed a point visiting Getafe CF thanks to a last-minute penalty (2-2). RCD Mallorca are the big losers as their 1-3 loss visiting Real Valladolid are putting the Majorcans inside the relegation zone for the first time in a month.

The middle of the table is a real trap too, some clubs have been trying to reach the European zone, but the true is that they’re also close to the drop zone. As example Real Sociedad, side that have only added 4 of the last 15 points in dispute, they are now six points below the European seats, but only eight above relegation. In this zone Athletic Bilbao are now only 4 points above the drop zone after a new disappointment at home, this time hosting Rayo Vallecano (1-2). The Basques have suffered three straight defeats in la liga.

Real Zaragoza and Sevilla CF are also in danger after losing on the weekend, Los Maños were beaten at the Calderón stadium by Atlético Madrid (0-2), same score suffered by the Sevillans during their visit to Valencia CF. Both Sevilla CF and Real Zaragoza have lost three of the last four matches in the competition. The situation already cost the job to Michel.

FC Barcelona has just broke the all-time best mark in la liga after a comfortable 3-1 win visiting Malaga CF, in this way the Catalans are ending the first round with an impressive mark of 18 wins and 1 draw after 19 matches, which means that they only lost two points within the period (2-2 Vs. Real Madrid). Atlético Madrid are eleven points behind, but they already have a 7-point gap over their neighbors, Real Madrid. A big shocker for the current champions.

But the biggest surprise of the first round is without doubt Rayo Vallecano, side that’s ending the first round lying at the sixth position after clinching a fourth straight victory. Real Betis is also a pleasant surprise, the Andalusians defeated Levante UD (2-0) and end the first round in Champions League seats. Valencia CF are also raising as the win over Sevilla CF meant their third straight success, now they are only one point below the European zone.
