MATCHDAY 28: DAY FOR THE LOCALS

18 Mar 2013
Couple of interesting things in this matchday; Depor reacted after three months winless, while high-flyers Real Sociedad are reaching the Champions League spots. Among the last seven places only Depor were able to clinch a victory.

Changing tides in la liga; the previous two matchdays lacked goals, and suddenly matchday 28 turned to be one of the most productive ones in the tournament. Totally 34 goals were scored, which means the third matchday with more goals on this season, only behind matchdays 11 (38) & 06 (35). Another characteristic was that 7 of the 10 local teams won their matches; mark only improved during matchday 06 (8) & 22 (8).

The big winner at the bottom of the standings is Deportivo; the Galicians were the only ones that won among the last seven positions, and it had a special meaning as it was their first win in three months facing the Galician derby against RC Celta (3-1). The other club in relegation, RCD Mallorca, suffered a big blow visiting Real Madrid (5-2), though the score is deceiving as they were winning 1-2 by half-time, and only the reaction of the Madrilenians at the start of the second half changed the course of the meeting.

Real Zaragoza remain as the only winless outfit in 2013 after been trashed by Sevilla CF at the Sánchez Pizjuán (4-0). Their last win took place on December 22 (0-2 visiting Athletic Bilbao). CA Osasuna suffered a third straight defeat after a brace of Diego Costa sealed the victory for Atletico Madrid (0-2). Granada CF, meanwhile, couldn’t impose their better game under the rain and only grabbed a point hosting Levante UD (1-1)

Even Athletic Bilbao lost during the weekend as they were defeated in their visit to Getafe CF with a goal scored by ex-Depor Borja (1-0). The Basques are eight points above the pit. As a consequence things are tighter at the bottom of la liga as eight points are separating 15th place CA Osasuna and the bottom club Deportivo.

Things didn’t change at the top of the table as the first three places won their games, including leaders FC Barcelona; the Catalans didn’t face any problem to overcome Rayo Vallecano at the Camp Nou (3-1). But there are big news too: Real Sociedad. The Basques are one of the most in-forms clubs in la liga and have spent ten matchdays without suffering a defeat, on Saturday they crushed Real Valladolid at home (4-1) and are not lying at the fourth position.

It was possible after Malaga CF suffered an unexpected defeat hosting RCD Espanyol (0-2, Colotto scored one of the goals). In midweek the Andalusians conquered an historic qualification to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, but they are paying the price in la liga after been unable to win any of the last four matches. Finally, Valencia CF remain on the right track to catch the Champions League seats after a 3-0 win hosting Real Betis; despite the score it was a polemic game that was opened with an inexistent penalty, something that brought the criticism of coach Pepe Mel, who described his team as “the clown of la liga.”

MATCHDAY 29: THE FIGHT CONTINUES
Excitement in two weeks after the break in la liga. Deportivo visit RCD Mallorca in a match that could change their poor season; a victory will increase the chances of salvation, while a loss could be definitive. RC Celta and Real Zaragoza face tough challenges; the Galicians host FC Barcelona and Los Mańos do the same with Real Madrid. Meanwhile, CA Osasuna pay a visit to instable Real Valladolid and Granada CD travel to San Mamés in order to meet Athletic Bilbao.

The interesting match at the top of the standings is the visit of fifth place Valencia CF to third spot Atletico Madrid; the sensation of the tournament, Real Sociedad, visits RCD Espanyol. Levante UD entertains Sevilla CF. Rayo Vallecano open the matchday hosting Malaga CF and the last game is the visit of Getafe CF to Real Betis.
