MATCH REPORT: PONTEVEDRA 0 – DEPORTIVO 2 (FRIENDLY)

29 Jul 2013
Another victory for Deportivo during the pre-season; Fernando Vázquez used two different teams for each half; Bruno Gama demonstrated that he will be a pillar in the new season, while Cañi and Bicho left glimpses of his class.

Coach Fernando Vázquez was still playing with a 4-2-3-1 figure, but the big difference with the previous four friendly games was that the starting squad had more players from the first team than from Fabril, a sign that the normal season is approaching and that this was considered to be the first exam for the players. Still, El Profesor used two different squads for each half.

Aranzubia defended the goal, Diego Seoane performed at the right-back spot, Manuel Pablo moved his position and performed at the left side of the defense, while the central spots were for Aythami Artiles and Kaká.

Juan Carlos delayed his position and played alongside Álex Bergantiños at midfield, the only three Fabril’s players at the starting lineup were in attack, which is normal due to the lack of signings. Cañi attacked from the right flank, Jorge Romay was the playmaker and Luis Fernández was the central striker. The lineup was complemented with the presence of Bruno Gama at the left wing.

The match was played as part of the 54th edition of the Luis Otero trophy; the rival is preparing the Tercera season and this was their presentation in front of the fans at the Pasarón stadium. The coach of the Granote is Nando, former player of the Super Depor era.

The first half an hour was intermittent for both outfits; Pontevedra dominated within the first fifteen minutes, having the best chances to score and looking more dangerous, mainly penetrating by the sides. Later, Deportivo improved, but showing the same apathy of the past friendly game against CD Ourense.

Richi González had the first goal attempt for the locals, he penetrated by the left side and had a chance to score that was stopped by Aranzubia (5’). Five minutes later David Garcia had an attempt in a free-kick action and once again Depor’s goalie had to make a save.

The first approximation for Depor arrived until minute 19, Juan Carlos and Bruno Gama combining to see the latter assisting Romay, but the attempt of the playmaker was stopped by locals goalie Francisco Fernández ‘Paco’.

And Deportivo found the first goal in a quick play, Luis began the sequence that ended with Bruno Gama firing from short-range, the ball hit defender Yago Vázquez and ended at the back of the net. The goal brought confidence to the attacking line of Deportivo and the game turned to be dominated by the visiting side.

Depor were close to reply within the final fifteen minutes. Luis was about to net the second goal collecting a cross of Seoane, but Paco made the save (34’).  Three minutes later Bruno Gama missed the target and there was a disallowed goal to Luis for an offside. Luis had the last chance in the half and once again Paco stopped his header (45’).

The Galician attacker, together with Bruno Gama and Cañi were the best players for Deportivo in the first part. Cañi left glimpses of his quality, while the other two were the ones that starred the main opportunities to score for the visiting side.

For the second half, Fernando Vázquez made nine changes and only Aranzubia and Bruno Gama stayed on the pitch. Seven of the nine replacements were players coming from Fabril, only Ayoze and Juan Dominguez were among the “veterans”, the later was the playmaker in the 4-2-3-1 draw.

The second part began with one opportunity for each side, the first with Tomás shooting wide (50’) and later a crossed attempt of Ayoze that missed the target (51’). Dani Iglesias had a great opportunity to score at minute 65, but he sent the ball out being alone before the keeper.

Both sides had a more grey performance in the second part, mainly as the multiple changes reduced the pace in the clash, Still, Depor had the best chances to score. The more entertaining minutes came within the last stretch of the match.

Bruno Gama was close to score the second with a crossed shot that missed the target (82’). Two minutes later substitute Kevin was unable to resolve a one-on-one action before Aranzubia and in the counterattack of that play Bicho sealed the result chipping the ball before the keeper.

The first team will continue training at Abegondo during the new week, and on Wednesday they will travel to Portugal in order to face a new friendly game, this time visiting FC Auroca, a recently promoted club to the Liga ZON Sagres (19h00 CET, Estádio Municipal de Arouca).
