PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO - CÓRDOBA (LIGA)

24 Aug 2013
First game of the season at the Riazor; Fernando Vázquez is still facing a puzzle in order to make the lineups due to the problems to sign players. The rival arrives using the same lineup of the opening matchday, including Xisco.

STATISTICS: THE FORTRESS OF THE RIAZOR
Two years ago Deportivo based its promotion campaign in the outrageous home record; of the 21 matches played at the Riazor the Galicians won 19, only losing once (0-1 Vs. Hércules CF, matchday 03) and only conceding one draw (1-1 Vs. Real Valladolid, matchday 37).  It will difficult to match the mark, but any promotion campaign should be based in a solid performance at home.

Last year the softness at home was the factor that condemned Deportivo, because the Blanquiazul outfit was the second worst team at home, only adding the 40% of the points disputed at the Riazor. Only Real Zaragoza presented a worst mark (33%).

Córdoba CF also debuted on the season with a victory, but the Andalusians have never won at the Riazor, this after five visits playing for Primera, eight at Segunda División and one in Copa Del Rey. The only thing they got was a goalless draw on the Segunda season 1973/74 plus a 1-1 draw on the Segunda campaign 1981/82.

A final stat for the game: the last time Deportivo won the first two matches in a league competition was on the Primera season 2005/06, it was the first with Joaquín Caparrós on board. First beating RCD Mallorca on the road (1-0) and then Atlético Madrid at the Riazor (1-0).

DEPORTIVO: IMPROVISING
One more time coach Fernando Vázquez will have to improvise in attack due to the slowness in the signing of the reinforcements. He remains only having one central striker at the team, Luis Fernández, who turns to be a recently promoted player from Depor B. For this reason he had to pick Dani Iglesias, who’s making his debut at the first team after signing a five-year renewal on Thursday. To make things worse winger/playmaker Juan Culio is suspended, while Bruno Gama left the club after the opening matchday against UD Las Palmas.

The expected arrival of the two central strikers will have to wait until next week, because the deadline to inscribe new players for this game ended on Thursday. So, Vázquez is only having four attackers at the first team, that’s the reason why Dani Iglesias was picked. Actually, the coach asked for the inscription of David Rochela and Diego Seoane, this in order to fill the gaps. The latter was included in the list for the game and could even end playing as a winger in case of an emergency.

The draw will continue to be a 4-2-3-1. The main novelty is that Juan Dominguez is advancing his position in order to perform as a playmaker. In this way Polish Cezary Wilk will make his debut joining Álex Bergantiños at midfield.

Luis is the central attacker with Rudy and Javier Arizmendi performing on the wings. The defense will be the same one of the past match, with German Lux at the goal, Laure will play at the right side, Manuel Pablo performs at the left, while Kaká and Pablo Insua are the central defenders.

Culio was initially included in the list for the game, but isn’t available after the second appeal was rejected. Álvaro Lemos is the only player at the injury room, Fabricio was picked for the first time since his return, while centre-back David Rochela wasn’t included in the list for the game. Neither left-back Luisinho, who joined the team on this week. In the end eleven former player of Fabril are part of the list. Meanwhile, centre midfielder Paulo Teles and centre-back Stefan Deák are training with Depor B ahead of their debut at Tercera.

Pablo Insua talked before the game and said that the set-pieces are going to be an important factor on the season, “In today’s football the goals scored in set-pieces almost represent the half of the goals at the team, and with Culio at the team it is clear that we will score many goals. It was good to win, mainly as we won the first game playing away from home. It was great. It was good to score too, but the important thing is that the team won.”

Meanwhile, Rudy was expressing his happiness for been at Depor, ”I like very much the football that we are seeing at this team. We have good players and young people that play good football. I’m fine physically. I didn’t train the whole pre-season, but was working hard. I still missing some pace.”

Finally, Juan Dominguez is eager to debut at home, ”It’s important in order to add the three points; it’s the goal for every weekend, which will led us to reach the target a t the end of the season. We rely in our team and we all have the hope of clinching the promotion. We are eager to debut at home in order to offer the three points to the public. I know a lot has been said regarding exits and arrivals, but the players are focused in this game. We are only focused in training and playing, can’t do anything else.”

List of picked players (18): Lux, Fabricio (goalkeepers); Laure, Manuel Pablo, Insua, Kaká, Uxío, Seoane, Ayoze (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Domínguez, Wilk, Juan Carlos, Bicho (midfielders); Luis, Rudy, Arizmendi & Dani Iglesias (attackers)

CORDOBA: CHANGING THE TIDE
This Andalusian club is searching for big things after the recent disappointments, since 1999 they have played twelve seasons at Segunda División, suffering the relegation once and only ending above the first ten places in one opportunity (6th on the season 2011/12). Despite the more recent record they feel strong enough to target the promotion seats.

They still trying to make signings in order to close the squad, but look enough settle to aspire for a positive result at the Riazor. New coach Pablo Villa was named after the weird exit of Juan Esnáider. They didn’t leave a positive impression in the opening game against SD Ponferradina, but still clinched the three points, so it’s expected to see the same 4-4-1-1 lineup in A Coruña.

Mikel Saizar is the starting goalkeeper, Dutch Jens Janse covers the right-back position, while ex-Real Madrid Raúl Bravo performs at the left side. Veteran Armando Lozano isn’t available for the game due to an injury case, so it’s expected that Iago Bouzon and Fran Cruz will keep their spots at the centre of the defense.

Ex Girona Luso Delgado and former Granada Abel Gómez are the centre midfielders, ex-Murcia Pedro Sánchez plays at the right wing, then José María López Silva attacks from the left flank. Carlos Caballero is acting as the link between midfield and the solo attacker.

And the central attacker is no other than Francisco Jiménez, ‘Xisco’, the ex-Depor returns to the Riazor for the first time after scoring the goal that meant the promotion to Primera two years ago. The Majorcan joined Córdoba on the previous winter window and proved to be a terrific signing for the Andalusians as he scored eight goals in the second part of the Segunda campaign.

New signing Eial Strahman will be sited in the bench; there are big expectations with the Argentine attacker , who was the top-scorer in the Mexican second division and le already impressed after scoring the last-minute goal that gave the three points before SD Ponferradina.

López Silva was saying that his team has nothing to lose in this game, ”If we win there then it will be a mortal blow. They are called to be among the first six positions, so we have nothing to lose. We will try to break a statistic: to not have won in A Coruña. We are eager to achieve important things and this game is going to be difficult.”

Meanwhile, Galician Iago Bouzón was saying that this was like a derby for him, ”Being Galician and coming from Celta it means an especial motivation for me ahead of the trip to A Coruña. Always from a healthy point of view as we’re facing a great team. In a general sense it’s a joy to return to Galicia, because I have spent many years living outside home. I see that Córdoba is prepared to win at the Riazor.”

List of picked players (18): Juan Carlos, Saizar (goalkeepers); Raúl Bravo, Samuel de Los Reyes, Iago Bouzón, Fran Cruz, Bernardo Cruz, Campabadal, Luso Delgado, Jensen (defenders); Abel Gómez, López Silva, Joselu, Carlos Caballero, Pedro Sánchez (midfielders); Xisco, Eial Strahman, & John-Christophe Ayina (strikers).
