PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – CD MIRANDÉS (LIGA)

05 Oct 2013
Arizmendi is a last-minute casualty and Rudy is entering into the starting eleven. Deportivo search for the second win at home and it needs to score goals for it. The rival is a team that plays much better in the second halves.

STATISTICS: THE BEST DEFENSE IN 17 YEARS
Deportivo have only allowed four goals after the first seven matchdays at Segunda División. It’s the best mark at the club in 17 years. On the Primera campaign 1996/97, John Benjamin Toshack’s team spent the first seventeen matchdays undefeated –a record at the club- and in the first eight games his team only allowed four goals. So, a new clean sheet in this game will allow the team to tie the mark.

Deportivo and CD Mirandés are presenting a similar path in this beginning of season, because both teams are characterized for been poor scorers and strong defenses. And it’s that the Galicians (7) and the Burgaleses (6) are the worst scorers among the first 14 positions in the league.

At the same time both teams are among the best defenses in the tournament; CD Mirandés has only allowed five goals so far, mark only improved in the league by Córdoba CF (3), Deportivo (4) and AD Alcorcón (4). Besides, both teams have clinched four clean sheets in seven games, same mark of Córdoba CF, AD Alcorcón and CD Lugo.

Finally, this is just the third meeting between these two clubs playing in any official competition. The only time Los Rojillos visited the Riazor in order to play against Depor was during the only season in which Los Blanquiazules played at Segunda B (1980/81) and the Galicians got the victory with a 3-0 score.

However, it wasn’t the only opportunity in which CD Mirandés visited the Riazor, because they played there in other two opportunities. In 1980 they faced  Racing de Ferrol at the Riazor playing for Segunda B; the game was played there as the stadium of Racing de Ferrol wasn’t  ready to host the encounter (0-0), previously they visited A Coruña in 1971 in order to play against Deportivo B at Tercera División and the youngsters got a 3-0 win with a brace of Rabadeira plus a goal from Pardo.

DEPORTIVO: GOALS, GOALS & GOALS
For the fourth time in its history, Deportivo have only scored one goal after the first three league games played at the Riazor. The previous opportunities this occurred were during the seasons 1966/67, 1969/70 & 2007/08; the big difference now is that it’s first time this situation happens with the Galician team playing at Segunda División.

Coach Fernando Vázquez is aware that any promotion aspiration passes through a solid performance at home, which means to add the points and one of the main conditions is to score the goals. For this reason he firstly switched the system from a 4-2-3-1 into a 4-4-2 and later has been trying to adjust the details of the offensive approach.

Since the past visit to Hércules CF he has modified the role of the wingers at the team, while during the week he practiced the movement of the ball. The target is to increase the number of scoring opportunities, which ultimately will lead to the so desired goals. The plan of the coach was to repeat the lineup of the previous two games, but it won’t be possible as Javier Arizmendi is a last-minute casualty (sciatica). At least Borja Bastón, the Pichichi of the team, is fit to play after surpassing a Soleus injury.

The predicted lineup is a 4-4-2 figure; German Lux remains defending the goal, Laure performs at the right-back position, while the central spots at defense are for Pablo Insua and Álex Bergantiños. The doubt is who will play at the left. Luisinho is back into contention, though Manuel Pablo has left a positive impression in the last two games and the coach didn’t want to clarify the issue during the press conference.

Polish Cezary Wilk and Juan Dominguez performs at midfield, while the wingers are Juan Culio and Juan Carlos Real, the latter is coming after bringing two assists. Finally Rudy returns into the starting eleven in order to join Borja Bastón up front, the latter is coming after breaking his drought with a brace against Hércules CF.

Fabril’s duo Bicho and Paulo Teles are once again part of the list. Together with Arizmendi, the other four players that remains at the injury room are wingers Antonio Núñez and Álvaro Lemos, plus centre-backs Uxío Marcos and Carlos Marchena, the latter completed Friday’s training, but the coaching staff doesn’t want to hurry his return.

Culio commented before the game that Deportivo need to improve the performance in the home clashes, ”The other day we didn’t play well at the Riazor, but were able to add the three points and that always brings confidence for the other games. I believe this is the right path though there are things to improve, because all the teams have things to improve. We know we have to improve and must be highly concentrated in order to grab the things wanted by the coach.”

Laure was also asking for an improvement playing at the Riazor, ”We are all eager to make a complete game at home, to find ourselves fine, to please people, ourselves and win a home game. This is the moment to tighten and clinch a positive streak allowing us to reach the top places as soon as possible, because the team is leaving a solid impression, and we know there’s still room for improvement.”

Finally, Pablo Insua commented that, “The intention of the team is get a positive streak, to add points and gain confidence. I think we’re all working fine, perhaps better than in previous weeks. We can do a better job at home.  CD Mirandés is a great rival, they’ve quality players and it’s going to be a complicate game, just like the rest.”

List of picked players (18): Lux, Fabricio (goalkeepers); Laure, Manuel Pablo, Luisinho, Seoane, Insua, Kaká (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, Wilk, Teles, Juan Carlos, Culio, Bicho (midfielders); Luis Fernández, Rudy & Borja Bastón (attackers)

CD MIRANDÉS: THE TEAM OF THE SECOND HALVES
Los Rojillos are living their second season at Segunda División and are doing it greatly, currently getting a spot inside the promotion zone and surpassing the expectations, but the team coached by Gonzalo Arconada is still leaving a sense of instability, characterized by the complete different behavior showed in both halves of the games.

And it’s that CD Mirandés is a team that begins the games asleep barely scoring in the first half. Of the six goals scored so far, four were netted in the second part. Besides, the team from Miranda de Ebro face big problems when the rival scores during the first halves, after all the two losses on the season occurred after conceding a goal in the first part (0-3 Vs. Recreativo de Huelva and 0-1 at RCD Mallorca).

The coach and players are conscious about the situation, as left-back Borja Docal commented during the week, ” We cannot rely solely on the second half; we know that we are strong and reach the final stretch better than the rivals, but we cannot rely only on that. We have to improve our starts, because it’s true that the rivals also play and force you to step back, but some days we went out only to defend and I think you can do something else, you have to push at the start of game as we do in the second part. "

Beyond finding a balance, coach Arconada is more concern of having enough men to prepare the games, because there’s a plague of injuries that has been affecting his team in recent weeks. There are four players out due to injury reasons, while others aren’t at their best form after missing the previous games dragging physical problems.

In the end Arconada is presenting a 4-2-3-1 figure that’s very similar to the team that defeated SD Ponferradina in the last game. Sevillan keeper Dani Jiménez is playing his third game on the season as Chilean Francisco Prieto is injured.

Ex-Numancia Iván Malón is the improvised right-back defender, former Athletic man Koikili Lertxundi returns from an injury and covers the left sector, while the centre-backs are César Caneda and ex-Córdoba Gaspar Gálvez.

Former Villarreal B Iriome González is normally a starter, but he has just surpassed a muscle contracture, so Arconada will continue trusting in 20-year-old Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta and veteran Iván Agustín for the central positions at midfield.

Aritz Mújika attacks from the right wing, ex-Girona Asier Goiria is the playmaker in the formation, while captain Pablo Infante performs at the left wing. Infante is the local hero that commanded CD Mirandés during the Copa Del Rey campaign 2011/12, ending the tournament as the Pichichi with seven goals scored, a remarkable fact considering the team was playing at Segunda B at that time. Finally, ex-Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao Íñigo Díaz de Cerio is the central attacker.

Pablo Infante was remembering the famous Copa campaign lived by Mirandés two years ago, because it meant to conquer important stadiums in Spain, ”This is a motivating game; everybody knows what Depor has dome within the last fifteen years. Clearly they’re favourites, not only in this game, but to clinch the promotion, but both teams are from Segunda and we are mentalized to get something positive.”

”In Copa we traveled to Vila-real, Santander or Barcelona and the results were good, before Espanyol things ended a little twisted, but I believe that we have the capacity to face Deportivo La Coruña, knowing they’re the main favourite. We will try, with our fight and hard work, to extract something positive from this scenario.”

List of picked players (18): Bernardo Dominguez, Dani Jiménez (goalkeepers); Koikili, César Caneda, Gaspar Gálvez, José Antonio Ríos, Iván Malón, Corral (defenders); Nagore, Muneta, Iván Agustín, Galarreta, Iriome (midfielders); Asier Goiria, Aritz Mujika, Pablo Infante, Díaz de Cerio & Asier Barahona (attackers)
