Big win for Depor, though the Galician team lost Lux due to a knee injury. Los Blanquiazules had the best opportunities and only the saves of Saizar kept the goalless draw until the last minute, then Bastón scored the winner.

Fernando Vázquez chose to play with Juan Dominguez performing as the playmaker in the scheme, in this way Juan Carlos was on the bench and Wilk was a starter. It was a 4-2-3-1 figure, with Lux as the starting goalie, Laure performed at the right side of the defense, Seoane was on the left, while Insua and Kaká performed at the centre of the defense.

Wilk and Álex Bergantiños were the centre midfielders, Antonio Núñez attacked from the right wing, Luisinho did it from the left, Juan Dominguez was the playmaker and Luis Fernández was the central attacker.

At Córdoba CF, coach Pablo Villa was presenting the expected 4-2-3-1 formation, with Francisco Jiménez Tejada ‘Xisco’ in attack, while the other references up front were Abel Gómez, Miguel Ángel Nieto and José María López Silva. The Nuevo Arcángel stadium had the best attendance of the season with 18,000 fans at the stands, at least 200 were Depor’s supporters.

Boring first part, perhaps part of Depor’s plans as the Galician were solid at defense waiting to surprise in the counterattack; Córdoba never knew how to attack the rival; initially it tried to penetrate by the wings, but the double mark avoided the problems for Deportivo. However the news in the game was the serious knee injury suffered by Lux, who had to be replaced by Fabricio.

Nothing occurred within the first ten minutes; the locals tried to have the ball possession but didn’t have any depth to create scoring chances. Depor, meanwhile, were expecting to release a counterattack and spent the time blocking the ways at their side of the pitch. The first chance was for the visiting team as Luis collected a long pass coming from defense, but his definition was poor (11’).

With the passage of the minutes the game turned to be tough, Córdoba were committing a lot of fouls (8 in the first 25 minutes) and lacked depth in attack. This time Seoane was releasing the free-kicks, while Luisinho and Núñez the corner-kicks; but Depor didn’t find the way to seize these situations.

Neither the Andalusians seized their only chance in set-pieces, this after Abel sent over the crossbar a direct free-kick at the edge of the area (29’). It was the winning formula used by Córdoba in the first round match played at the Riazor.

With the passage of the minutes Depor began to grown, led by Wilk, who was the owner of midfield. Álex also had a decent performance and little by little Juan Dominguez, Luisinho and Núñez started to show up. At minute 33, Luisinho made a solo-play on the left wing eluding two rivals, but his final attempt went wide. At this point in the game the Galicians already had the ball possession.

However, the enthusiasm of Depor was cut as German Lux sustained an injury. The Argentine man jumped as he was trying to catch a high cross from the left, then he collided with Insua and at the moment of falling into the ground his left knee was twisted and he had to be replaced by Fabricio, who was debuting on this season. Luis Fernández was also dragging a muscle problem, but managed to end the first half.

The game lost pace after this incident; Depor were no longer attacking while Córdoba were clueless. The Andalusians started the game focused in attacking the side of Laure, but the double mark released the pressure and by the end of the first part the locals weren’t finding any crack. The only shot on target in the first part came until the stoppage time with a drilling attempt of Wilk that was stopped by local goalie Mikel Saizar (45+2’).

Dramatic second part; Depor had three chances that were saved by Saizar and it seemed that the negative streak was going to be extended to six games without victories, but a late goal helped to secure the three points before a direct rival.

The second part began with Depor pushing up front before a rival that continued to be lost. The Galicians were combined pretty well at the edge of the area and this time they were creating scoring chances. At minute 50, a long combinative play ended with Núñez stepping into Córdoba’s area, but his strong shot was deflected by Saizar. It was the first big save by the local keeper.

One minute later Borja Bastón replaced Luis, who was dragging problems from the first half.  Then the game returned to the same path of the first part: with the game stuck at midfield, though this picture began to change as soon as the locals began to push.

At minute 57, Córdoba completed its first shot on target; Xisco collected a perfect cross from the right released by Nieto, but he sent the ball exactly were Fabricio was standing. It was the first warning, but also the lonely shot on target of the Andalusians in the whole match. Then the locals had three straight chances in set-pieces (two corner-kicks and one free-kick).

The tide had changed and Fernando Vázquez decided to make the last change in order to refresh the attack, so Diogo Salomão made his debut on this season replacing Núñez. The Portuguese revitalized the attack while Luisinho grew up, so Depor regained the control of the game.

At minute 66, Juan Dominguez was close to score with an impressed volley from the edge of the area that was cleared by Saizar. This was the second big save by the local keeper. Córdoba responded with a wide shot of substitute Pelayo (74’).

At minute 81, Borja Bastón was assisted by Juan Dominguez during a counterattack, the Madrilenian attempted a scissor-kick shot, but he missed the target. More dangerous was the attempt of Luisinho that was repealed by Saizar (87’). This was the third big save by the Basque keeper, the only reason to explain why the game was still goalless.

But the deadlock was broke two minutes before the final whistle, Diogo Salomão got the ball at the edge of the area and attempted a shot that was deflected by Saizar, the ball went into the path of Luisinho, who made a big play at the left corner of the box eluding two rivals to end releasing a drilling cross that Borja Bastón only had to push in. It is his 8th goal on the season, and it was really important as it meant three vital points.

Big win for a Deportivo that deserved more, but the saves of local goalie Saizar kept the drama until the last minute. At that moment Luisinho made a great play and Borja Bastón scored the goal. At the same time the Galician outfit was hit by the knee injury of Lux, the first scans determined that it was only a knee sprain, but more scans will be made in A Coruña. The keeper could end up missing the rest of the season.

The win is sending Depor back to the top of the standings waiting for Sunday’s result of Sporting Gijón, side that’s hosting Recreativo de Huelva. On next Saturday, Deportivo return to the Riazor in order to host CE Sabadell CF (20h00 CET).
